An economy (Greek οίκος-household and νέμoμαι - manage) is an area of the production, distribution or trade, and consumption of goods and services by different agents in a given geographical location. The economic agents can be individuals, businesses, organizations, or governments. Transactions occur when two parties agree to the value or price of the transacted good or service, commonly expressed in a certain currency.
Economic activity is spurred by production which uses natural resources, labor, and capital. It has changed over time due to technology (automation, accelerator of process, reduction of cost functions), innovation (new products, services, processes, new markets, expands markets, diversification of markets, niche markets, increases revenue functions) such as that which produces intellectual property and changes in industrial relations (child labor being replaced with universal access to education).
A given economy is the result of a set of processes that involves its culture, values, education, technological evolution, history, social organization, political structure and legal systems, as well as its geography, natural resource endowment, and ecology, as main factors. These factors give context, content, and set the conditions and parameters in which an economy functions.
Economics is the social science that describes the factors that determine the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.
The term economics comes from the Ancient Greek οἰκονομία from οἶκος (oikos, "house") and νόμος (nomos, "custom" or "law"), hence "rules of the house (hold for good management)". 'Political economy' was the earlier name for the subject, but economists in the late 19th century suggested "economics" as a shorter term for "economic science" to establish itself as a separate discipline outside of political science and other social sciences.
Economics focuses on the behavior and interactions of economic agents and how economies work. Consistent with this focus, primary textbooks often distinguish between microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics examines the behavior of basic elements in the economy, including individual agents and markets, their interactions, and the outcomes of interactions. Individual agents may include, for example, households, firms, buyers, and sellers. Macroeconomics analyzes the entire economy (meaning aggregated production, consumption, savings, and investment) and issues affecting it, including unemployment of resources (labor, capital, and land), inflation, economic growth, and the public policies that address these issues (monetary, fiscal, and other policies).
Europe (i/ˈjʊərəp/ or /ˈjɜːrəp/) is a continent that comprises the westernmost part of Eurasia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the east and southeast, Europe is generally considered as separated from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits. Yet the borders of Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are arbitrary, as the primarily physiographic term "continent" also incorporates cultural and political elements.
Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 countries, Russia is by far the largest by both area and population, taking up 40% of the continent (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 739–743 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe has a climate heavily affected by warm Atlantic currents, tempering winters and enabling warm summers on most of the continent, even on latitudes that have severe climates in North America and Asia. Further from the Atlantic, seasonal differences increase, but the mildness of the climate remains.
The Real refers to that which is authentic, the unchangeable truth in reference both to being/the Self and the external dimension of experience, also referred to as the infinite and absolute—as opposed to a reality based on sense perception and the material order.
For Jacques Lacan, the order of the real is not only opposed to the imaginary but is also located beyond the symbolic. Unlike the symbolic, which is constituted in terms of oppositions such as "presence" and "absence", there is no absence in the real. The symbolic opposition between "presence" and "absence" implies the possibility that something may be missing from the symbolic, the real is "always in its place: it carries it glued to its heel, ignorant of what might exile it from there." If the symbolic is a set of differentiated signifiers, the real is in itself undifferentiated: "it is without fissure." The symbolic introduces "a cut in the real," in the process of signification: "it is the world of words that creates the world of things." Thus the real emerges as that which is outside language: "it is that which resists symbolization absolutely." The real is impossible because it is impossible to imagine, impossible to integrate into the symbolic order. This character of impossibility and resistance to symbolization lends the real its traumatic quality.

Not all innovation in finance is valuable. Not all trading is useful. And a bigger financial system isn't necessarily a better one. Parts of the financial services industry have a unique ability to attract outsized returns and create instability that harms the rest of society. Can financial innovation be harnessed so finance can benefit the economy rather than serve as its destructive master? This panel, featuring Joseph Stiglitz, Adair Turner, Axel Leijonhufvud, and Ed Clark, moderated by former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, seeks to address these critical issues.

Press TV has conducted an interview with Professor Michel Chossudovsky, economic analyst and researcher with the Centre for Research on Globalization in Montreal about the issue of the widening gap between the richest in society and the poorest globally. According to Chossudovsky: "It is not production and trade, which is the source of enrichment; it is manipulation and fraud at a global stage. We're dealing with institutionalized theft, which is embedded in the financial system. It is not what we might describe as capital accumulation from a productive process, nor is it through work performed by these wealthy people." The following is an approximate transcript of the interview. Press TV: That is a staggering difference as far as a percentage, a very small percentage basically contro...

Europe needs investment to create jobs, make Euro more competitive, to strengthen the single market and support small businesses. A first major initiative of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission is therefore the Investment plan for Europe. In one year time, it mobilised more than €100 billion of investment, with 249 approved transactions via the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI). This money is aimed at projects that find it difficult to secure finance in the market. With more and more projects being chosen each month, the target of mobilising over €315 billion by 2018, is well underway. For the first time in almost a decade, all of Europe’s economies are set to grow. But major questions remain on whether that growth can actually happen this year or next with all the uncertainty surrounding us, from mixed messages from the new US administration, or a spate of elections across Europe, to worries about Brexit and China. I'm Maithreyi Seetharaman and this week Real Economy is at the London Business School to try and analyse the road ahead for Europe's economy. But this is a serious business, that's taking the world into a new global economy. Some 1.2 million asylum applications were made in Europe in 2015. To put that figure into context, this summer more than 300,000 applications were made. That's only around 600 applications for every million Europeans. Asylum rules in Europe can cause confusion about the economic impact because it is often difficult to distinguish between genuine refugees and economic migrants, so here is a crash course. *Crash course* When asylum seekers first arrive, a host country pays to process applic… READ MORE : http://www.euronews.com/2016/11/01/refugees-in-germany-from-desperation-to-economic-fortune What are the top stories today? Europe needs investment to create jobs, make Euro more competitive, to strengthen the single market and support small businesses. A first major initiative of Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission is therefore the Investment plan for Europe. In one year time, it mobilised more than €100 billion of investment, with 249 approved transactions via the European Fund for Strategic Investment (EFSI). This money is aimed at projects that find it difficult to secure finance in the market. With more and more projects being chosen each month, the target of mobilising over €315 billion by 2018, is well underway.

Exploding real estate prices, zero interest rate and a rising stock market – the rich are getting richer. What danger lies in wait for average citizens? For years, the world’s central banks have been pursuing a policy of cheap money. The first and foremost is the ECB (European Central Bank), which buys bad stocks and bonds to save banks, tries to fuel economic growth and props up states that are in debt. But what relieves state budgets to the tune of hundreds of billions annoys savers: interest rates are close to zero. The fiscal policies of the central banks are causing an uncontrolled global deluge of money. Experts are warning of new bubbles. In real estate, for example: it’s not just in German cities that prices are shooting up. In London, a one-bed apartment can easily cost more th...

The Chinese economic slowdown comes as no surprise to global analysts. As outlooks are adjusted accordingly, it isn't the country's profit margins that are causing concern, but the decades of spending on unfinished building projects that have created a deluge of bad debt for China. Taxpayers point the finger of blame at the government and the lack of social change and development evaluations before money is squandered on the hundreds of unfinished projects, or "rotten buildings" as they have come to be known. According to the Chinese government, China currently has two billion square metres of empty residential space - enough to house 100 million people. Economists echo the peoples' sentiments with the reason for a potential crash placed squarely on the government's shoulders with its ...
The growth economy is historically relatively recent, and is now consuming 1.5 Earths and growing. Compound interest is sucking the lifeblood out of the real economy, from households to countries. Mike Lewis, co-author of The Resilience Imperative, tells the story of the successful JAK cooperative Bank in Sweden, which is based on saving on behalf of others and uses only simple interest. It’s one example from the book which illuminates “alternate pathways to move from a growth imperative to a resilience imperative… It presumes we will transition ourselves back to one Earth and find a different way of dealing with a number of ways we meet our basic needs — whether it’s with food, energy, shelter, land, or finance (an important part of the problem).” Don’t miss his stunning hungry hamster ex...
