John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona. He was the Republican presidential nominee in the 2008 United States presidential election.
McCain followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the United States Navy, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he was almost killed in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, seriously injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. McCain experienced episodes of torture, and refused an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.
He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and moved to Arizona, where he entered politics. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, he served two terms, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, winning re-election easily four times, most recently in 2010. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain at times has had a media reputation as a "maverick" for his willingness to disagree with his party on certain issues. After being investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the Keating Five, he made campaign finance reform one of his signature concerns, which eventually led to the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He is also known for his work towards restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s, and for his belief that the war in Iraq should be fought to a successful conclusion. McCain has chaired the Senate Commerce Committee, opposed spending that he considered to be pork barrel, and played a key role in alleviating a crisis over judicial nominations.
Two ships of the United States Navy have been named USS John S. McCain, in honor of John S. McCain, Sr. and John S. McCain, Jr.:
USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy. She is part of the Seventh Fleet, and she has her homeport at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan.
This warship is named after John S. McCain, Sr., and John S. McCain, Jr., both Admirals in the United States Navy. John S. McCain, Sr., commanded the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, and acted as commander of the Fast Carrier Task Force during the latter stages of World War II. John S. McCain, Jr., commanded the U.S. Navy submarines USS Gunnel and USS Dentuda during World War II. Subsequently he held a number of posts, rising to Commander-in-Chief of the United States Pacific Command before retiring in 1972. These men were the grandfather and father of Senator John S. McCain III.
John S. McCain's keel was laid down on 3 September 1991, at the Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine. The ship was launched on 26 September 1992, sponsored by Cindy McCain, the wife of Senator John McCain. McCain was commissioned on 2 July 1994, at the Bath Iron Works. The former President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, was the ceremony's principal speaker.
The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. The U.S. Navy is the largest, most capable navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy has the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with ten in service, two in the reserve fleet, and three new carriers under construction. The service has 328,194 personnel on active duty and 101,199 in the Navy Reserve. It has 272 deployable combat vessels and more than 3,700 aircraft in active service as of February 2016.
The U.S. Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which was established during the American Revolutionary War and was essentially disbanded as a separate entity shortly thereafter. It played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played the central role in the World War II defeat of Japan. The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in such areas as East Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward areas during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it an active player in U.S. foreign and defense policy.
Guided Missile was a London-based independent record label set up by Paul Kearney in 1994, and active until the early 2000s. Guided Missile Records focused on releases by underground indie bands through the late 1990s, and Guided Missile continues to the present day as an events promoter, at venues such as The Lexington and, until closure, the Buffalo Bar.
A series of 'tribute' records in the early 2000s culminated in a minor UK chart hit by Diff'rent Darkness in 2003.
Guided Missile has been acclaimed as an inspiration for current UK DIY labels such as Upset the Rhythm.

Show Podcast: https://goo.gl/5trOp - Washington (CNN)Ask Sen. John McCain if he sees a comparison between Presidents Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan and the veteran Republican answers without hesitation. "No, I don't," he told David Axelrod on "The Axe Files," a podcast from the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and CNN. McCain said he found "appalling" Trump's assertion in an interview earlier this year that the US lacked the moral standing to question Russian President Vladimir Putin's human rights abuses. "We've got a lot of killers. What do you think, our country's so innocent?" Trump said at the time. "To state that there's some moral equivalency between an imperfect nation -- that's the United States of America -- and Vladimir Putin is appalling," McCain responded. "And I t...
Russian President Vladimir Putin is a bigger threat to world security than the Islamic State group, US senator John McCain has told the ABC. The Republican also admitted in an exclusive interview with 7.30 that President Donald Trump sometimes made him "nervous". During a visit to Canberra, Senator McCain said Mr Putin was the "premier and most important threat, more so than ISIS". "I think ISIS can do terrible things," he said. "But it's the Russians who tried to destroy the fundamental of democracy and that is to change the outcome of an American election." Read more here: http://ab.co/2rNNY2y

Dave Gahary & Phil Tourney with Andrew Carrington Hitchcock, June 8, 2017. Andy: "On today’s show I was joined by Dave Gahary And Phil Tourney to mark the 50th Anniversary Of Israel’s Attack On America, when on June 8th 1967 Israel attacked the U.S.S. Liberty. In preparation for this show I read Dave and Phil’s definitive book on the attack which is entitled, “Erasing The Liberty,” in its entirety. During the show I covered 20 pages from 12 sections of the book, then I handed over to both Dave and Phil to offer their comments on each section. Dave is an accomplished freelance journalist. Phil served on the U.S.S. Liberty and miraculously survived the attack in which 34 of his shipmates were killed and 174 were wounded.
