On this episode of Ignition presented by Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com), Jonny Lieberman heads to Scotland to get his hands on the latest iteration of Mazda’s famed and legendary roadster, the Miata. Motor Trend, having much to do with the creation of the first generation of this car, was particularly excited about covering this new model, considering the last generation model debuted nearly 10 years ago. For today's unboxing review we bring you the one and only 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata. We already reviewed the new MX-5 RF, so we wanted to take another look at what's considered to be the greatest all-around roadster sports car of all time. We're not just saying that; more than 1 million examples have been sold since the Miata first arrived on the scene in 1989. Now in its fourth generation, the latest MX-5 Miata is sort of a return to form, in that engineers and designers were tasked with reducing weight and shortening the car's dimensions. Shockingly, Mazda felt the MX-Miata became too big over the years. The final result weighs just 2,300 pounds and is powered by a spunky 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Power, of course, goes to the rear wheels only. Tip: Go for the standard six-speed manual instead of the optional six-speed slushbox.
Our tester, a fully-loaded Grand Touring trim, came with 17-inch alloy wheels (16-inchers are standard), Soul Red exterior paint, leather-trimmed and heated sports seats and LED lights. And, of course, there's that manual soft top. Opting for the retractable folding roof, in the RF, adds 113 pounds to the little car's weight. Remember, weight is the MX-5 Miata's ultimate enemy, and you need to make the most of that power-to-weight ratio for the best driving experience for around $30,000. Enjoy the review!

The Mazda MX-5 RF is the hardtop version of the standard MX-5. But unlike the old MX-5 Roadster Coupe, the RF is more of a targa - with a folding roof panel that preserves the coupe profile when folded. It's no more practical than the standard MX-5, although it is quieter on the move. Power comes from a choice of 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.

Mazda MX-5
The Mazda MX-5, released as the Mazda MX-5 Miata /miˈɑːtə/ in North America and as the Eunos Roadster in Japan, is a lightweight two-seater roadster with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Manufactured by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan, the model debuted in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show. The MX-5 was conceived as a small roadster – with light weight and minimal mechanical complexity limited only by legal and safety requirements, while being technologically modern and reliable. The MX-5 is conceptually an evolution of small sports roadsters of the 1960s, such as the Triumph Spitfire, Datsun 2000, Alfa Romeo Spider, and particularly the Lotus Elan.
The second generation MX-5 (NB) was launched in 1998 (for the 1999 model year), the third generation (NC) model was launched in 2005 (for the 2006 model year), and a fourth generation (ND) was released in 2015 (for the 2016 model year). It continues to be the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car in history and by July 2014 over 940,000 MX-5s had been built and sold around the world. Production of the MX-5 fell by 2013 to below 14,000 units, due to the world finance crisis in 2008, and the pre-announcement in 2012 of the coming ND model.

For today's unboxing review we bring you the one and only 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata. We already reviewed the new MX-5 RF, so we wanted to take another look at what's considered to be the greatest all-around roadster sports car of all time. We're not just saying that; more than 1 million examples have been sold since the Miata first arrived on the scene in 1989. Now in its fourth generation, the latest MX-5 Miata is sort of a return to form, in that engineers and designers were tasked with reducing weight and shortening the car's dimensions. Shockingly, Mazda felt the MX-Miata became too big over the years. The final result weighs just 2,300 pounds and is powered by a spunky 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. We're not just saying that; more than 1 million examples have been sold since the Miata first arrived on the scene in 1989. Now in its fourth generation, the latest MX-5 Miata is sort of a return to form, in that engineers and designers were tasked with reducing weight and shortening the car's dimensions. Shockingly, Mazda felt the MX-Miata became too big over the years. The final result weighs just 2,300 pounds and is powered by a spunky 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. Power, of course, goes to the rear wheels only. Tip: Go for the standard six-speed manual instead of the optional six-speed slushbox.
Our tester, a fully-loaded Grand Touring trim, came with 17-inch alloy wheels (16-inchers are standard), Soul Red exterior paint, leather-trimmed and heated sports seats and LED lights. And, of course, there's that manual soft top. Opting for the retractable folding roof, in the RF, adds 113 pounds to the little car's weight. Remember, weight is the MX-5 Miata's ultimate enemy, and you need to make the most of that power-to-weight ratio for the best driving experience for around $30,000. Enjoy the review!

It's no more practical than the standard MX-5, although it is quieter on the move. Power comes from a choice of 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, with a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes.
