Mischief Reef (Chinese: 美济礁; pinyin: Meiji Jiao; literally: "Meiji Reef"; Tagalog: Panganiban reef; Vietnamese: Đá Vành Khăn) is a large reef in the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, located 250 kilometers west of Palawan Island of Philippines.
Mischief reef is occupied and controlled by the People's Republic of China, and claimed by the Republic of China (Taiwan), the Philippines and Vietnam.
The area surrounding it is said to be rich in yet unexplored oil and gas fields.
One source says that Mischief reef was discovered by Henry Spratly in 1791 and was named after the German sailor Heribert Mischief, one of his crew. It has rocks above water at low tide and a lagoon.
Mischief reef is located at 9° 55' N, 115° 32' E. It lies 50 nautical miles east of Union banks.
In 1994 and 1995, China built initial structures on stilts in the area. The Philippine government protested these actions. However, the Chinese government rejected the protest and said that the structures were shelter for fishermen. In 1999, another wave of protests from Manila occurred when China added more structures to Mischief Reef.
The China Seas consist of a series of marginal seas in the Western Pacific Ocean, around China. They are the major components signifying the transition from the continent of Asia to the Pacific Ocean. They have been described in terms of their collective vastness and complexity:
Seas included in the China Seas are:
South China (simplified Chinese: 华南; traditional Chinese: 華南; pinyin: huá nán) is a geographical and cultural region that covers the southernmost part of China. Its precise meaning varies with context.
In the broadest sense, Southern China can denote the entire portion of the country south of the line demarcated by the Qin Mountains and Huai River. Between 1945 and 1949, the Republic of China defined Guizhou, Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian and Taiwan as the "Seven Provinces of South China" (simplified Chinese: 华南七省; traditional Chinese: 華南七省; pinyin: huá nán qī shěng). The term can also be used to denote the Lingnan region; but today, the phrase is generally used to refer only to Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and Macau (historically also known as Liangguang). Defined as such, South China is also contained within South Central China.
The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping sailing through its waters and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.
It is located
The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.
South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent, but it is sometimes called by different names in China's neighboring countries, often reflecting historical claims to hegemony over the sea.
China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces; five autonomous regions; four direct-controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing); two mostly self-governing special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau); and claims sovereignty over Taiwan.
Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.
Mischief reef (Panganiban reef) is controlled by the Philippines until China takeover the area in February 1995. How the Philippines can take back this reef? When China massively reclaim the area! When the Philippines Armed Forces unable to patrol due to monsoon season, China slowly annexed the reef by building a structure and insisting its for their fisherman use. The Philippine Government strongly react the structure creation but later on the two sides settle amicably. But in 1998 (1997 Asian Financial Crisis), China resume the construction of the reef. MISCHIEF REEF, SOUTH CHINA SEA — China may be building a third airstrip in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, according to a Washington-based think tank. Satellite images taken on September 8 show that China had reclaimed a piece of land with a retaining wall about 3,000 meters long on Mischief Reef, which is suspected to be an airstrip under construction, CNN reported. China is already building airstrips on Fiery Cross Reef and Subi Reef. "If it does turn out to be a runway, China will have three airstrips that can carry any plane the PLA [People's Liberation Army] has to offer," Greg Poling, the director of Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies' Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, told CNN. INTRODUCTION: USS JOHN S. MCCAIN traveled close to Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands, in South China Sea. It was the third "freedom of navigation operation" during Trump's presidency. China’s sweeping claims of sovereignty over the sea have annoyed competing claimants Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. United States, Japan, Australia and India favor freedom of navigation as it is a very important sea route with 5 trillion $ in trade, half of global merchant shipping and 1/2 of world’s oil shipment pass through it. The sea also has alleged 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. This operation is the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic ...

NORTH KOREA uses "CHINA GPS" missile control? There is some speculation that North Korea is using the "Chinese GPS" system to guide the target for long-range ballistic missiles. According to reports by 2014, many Korean engineers have come to China to study the technology of the navigation satellite system, the "Big Dipper," also known as "China GPS". By the end of 2014, another report quoting a Chinese military expert as saying that Beijing could not stop Pyongyang from using "Big Dipper" in military operations. In addition to the Big Dipper, other options for North Korea include the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Russian Glonass system. The United States says China has reclaimed some ...
Satellite images show that China is reclaiming land around a submerged reef in disputed territory in the South China Sea. The photos show that China has been reclaiming land around Mischief Reef, which lies 250km off the Philippine island of Palawan in the disputed Spratly Islands that are claimed by China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei. Several dredgers can be seen at the northern and western edges of the reef. The entrance to the reef has also been widened to about 275 meters, the New York Times reported. "China is creating a great wall of sand with dredgers and bulldozers," Adm. Harry Harris, the commander of the United States Pacific fleet said in a speech in Canberra, Australia. He noted that China has now created more than four square kilometers of artificial landm...

U.S. officials said on Wednesday, a U.S. Navy warship sailed within 12 nautical miles of an artificial island built up by China in the South China Sea. It is the first such challenge to Beijing in the strategic waterway since U.S. President Donald Trump took office. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officials said the USS Dewey traveled close to the Mischief Reef in the Spratly Islands. It is among a string of islets, reefs and shoals over which China has territorial disputes with its neighbors. The so-called freedom of navigation operation is sure to anger China. It comes as Trump is seeking Beijing's cooperation to rein in ally North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/R1TGcJl0qO4/us-usa-southchinasea-navy-idUSKBN18K353 http://www.wo...

The South China Sea is a strategically important and resource-rich area in Asia for trade, and believed to contain valuable oil and gas deposits. It is also a long-disputed region. The fact that both the Chinese and American media would even entertain the possibility of a war doesn't bode well; why the hell do you think the US is letting Japan remilitarize while buddying to Vietnam, while China and the US wine and dine India and China begs Kim Jong Un to stop killing his relatives? China and the US and Russia are all oddly operating from weakness; and that just makes it even worse. China's stagnation, the US' debt, and Russias scaling back of military upgrades due to sanctions and low oil prices all put stress on frienemies turned hostile. "Spratlys: Mga Isla ng Kalayaan (The Islands of Freedom)" is a documentary on the maritime disputes in the South China Sea, filmed at the height of tension between China and the Philippines. This is a journey across the 9 island detachments of the Philippines scattered across the West Philippine Sea, where soldiers and civilians alike are trying to make do with meager facilities, only to cement the country's claim on the disputed areas. It shows actual footage of China's aggression in the West Philippine Sea, from harassment of vessels, to the illegal extraction of endangered marine resources. It shows how - despite its determination - the Philippines remains militarily weak in the West Philippine Sea, a fact that does not escape other claimant countries. This documentary was Finalist ...
