President Trump has announced that the Unites States would pull out of the Paris Climate Accord. One of the motivations behind this decision was the potential to keep a major campaign promise: bringing jobs back to coal country. But the demand for coal is already drying up. Paris may be out, but so is coal. Despite President Trump’s plan to revive the coal industry, 255 coal plants have closed or have announced their closure since 2010. Two of these plants are in the Trump strong hold of Adams County, Ohio, where the J.M. Stuart Station and the Killen Station are scheduled to close next year. These plants are responsible for some 700 jobs in the small community of 28,000 people. While that may not seem like much, 700 jobs translates to about $35 million in salaries and $9 million in pro...
John Oliver has some thoughts on the iconic “Ahhh" that opens every HBO Show. Let him explain why.
Thousands of residents in Windsor, Canada are plagued by a mysterious buzzing sound. It's called the Windsor hum, and it is said to come from an island in the river between Detroit and Windsor. Residents track and record the hum daily, and are desperate for a solution to the constant noise pollution. But any action from the U.S. side is met with secrecy and inaction. VICE NEWS talks to residents, captures recordings of the hum, and then takes a journey to the notorious island in an attempt to investigate the mysterious sound. As a candidate, Barack Obama promised to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which were started by his predecessor. But instead, Obama as commander-in-chief expanded the number of countries in which the U.S. has military involvement from four to seven. While President Obama did reduce troops by 76 percent in Afghanistan and 97 percent in Iraq, he also sent 500 soldiers into Syria and is leaving office as the only president to serve two complete terms during wartime. And even while soldiers were coming home, the brand of warfare was shifting, from boots on the ground to stealth machines in the sky. What sets the Obama war strategy apart is the sweeping and unilateral adoption of a shadowy fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles better known as drones. When Obama accepted his Nobel Peace Priz...

Donald Trump has nominated one judge so far in his presidency, and he’s an important one: Neil Gorsuch, to the Supreme Court. But there are 117 other vacancies in federal courts across the country that Trump will have the opportunity to fill — more than twice the number of vacancies President Obama faced at this point in his first term. This segment originally aired Nov. 14, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO. “There is no proper housing, no good life,” a Syrian refugee named Farouk told VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson in Berlin. “There is no good food, no work. Some people have to wait for a year to start learning German. People say it’s our fault, no.” When the migrant crisis began to overwhelm Europe last year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood out for her insistence on opening the country to newcomers. More than a million refugees moved in, and now Merkel’s popularity is waning. “Our rooms are very cramped,” Farouk said. “No money, nothing that we can build a life with. There is nothing that gives us hope for tomorrow.” Read "Angela Merkel seeks a fourth term as German Chancellor" - http://bit.ly/2gNlmif...
When Britain leaves the European Union in March 2019, its mighty banks will lose their automatic right to trade in the rest of the continent. That disadvantage leaves the door wide open for European cities that want to steal tens of billions of dollars in business from the financial capital of the world. The great Brexit heist is already well under way, and London’s next-door neighbor is after the crown jewels. Watch VICE News Tonight 7:30PM ET on HBO. Last year, more than 160,000 migrants fleeing war in the Middle East ended up in Sweden, a country of only 9.5 million people. That’s the highest number of refugees per capita in Europe. But an increasing number of Swedes have grown impatient with their country’s generosity. Now, many of those migrants are being asked to leave. The government says that up to 80,000 will be deported, a large number of whom come from Afghanistan. In October, Sweden joined Germany in reaching an agreement with Afghanistan to repatriate tens of thousands of rejected asylum seekers. Michael Moynihan went to northern Sweden to meet with some of the migrants awaiting their fate. U.K. fishermen are some of the strongest supporters of Brexit, alleging that the European Union’s control of what they catch and where hurts their trade. After Brexit, however, British fishermen could be able to catch hundreds of thousands of tons more fish. Fishing in the EU is highly regulated, and those regulations can be complex. Each member state has a specific quota for each species, and that quota changes in different parts of EU waters. Fishermen in some countries can also sail further into foreign territory than others. British fishermen say the limits set by the EU’s fisheries policy are unfair and need to change, but supporters argue that the quotas have maintained, and sometimes increased, fish stocks. And with 66 percent of British fish earmarked for export, U.K. fisherman w...
A new wave of anti-immigration, populist candidates are in serious contention across Europe, shocking the political establishment. But one European leader was ahead of the curve: former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi essentially wrote the Donald Trump playbook: a media-savvy real estate mogul turned populist campaigner, he mobilized voter sentiment against immigrants, and used his personal charisma to brush off scandals about his taxes and his personal life. Even today, at the age of 80, Berlusconi is popular enough to consider mounting a comeback. VICE founder Shane Smith sat down with him at his opulent home near Milan. More than 100,000 people have now escaped fighting in the Iraqi city of Mosul. Many are women and children. But there are also military-age males among the crowds arriving at camps for internally displaced people, or IDPs. Authorities are concerned that there may be Islamic State group (IS) “sleeper cells” among the people trying to leave. They fear IS fighters could slip out and launch attacks elsewhere. Security forces are carefully checking names against their databases to look for signs of IS support. But, after years of occupation, it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t have some connection to the jihadi terrorist group. A series of images I filmed during my year in Berlin as a cameraman and editor in the correspondence of a news TV station. It was a very special year for me in which I improved my skills both in the street and in the editing room and learned a great deal about Journalism as well. It also gave me the chance to meet important personalities of the German and European politics face to face. The theme song from HBO's The Newsroom was used for the video. Under the pressure of unfolding events, the community starts to fall apart and show its true face. Solving the mystery divides the story into several interweaving narratives that ultimately connect in unexpected ways.

Tomorrow's coming 'round
A hair-pin curve in the road
She's got a run in her stocking
And she's missing the heel of her shoe
Got up this morning rolled out of bed
I spilled a diet coke
Called my mother said, "Hi"
What I meant to say was, "Why is your life a joke?"
Then, I went down to that ugly bar and
I clicked my heels three times just like you said
And I climbed that road to your empty house
The anticipation was a turn on
But you let me down
'Coz, I stood on that empty street alone
I said, "I'm ready for my close up now, Mr. Demille"
I waited for the light, but it never shone
Well I wonder what you do with that expensive piece of land
That overlooks a billion years of history
I have a sneaking suspicion, you will never understand
Hey maybe I'll see you down by the Rocky and Bullwinkle
And we can talk to that charlatan psychic
And she can paint a prettier picture of your future
'Coz that day in my life, that day in my life
I dreamt tomorrow, had a prettier face
I dreamt tomorrow, would have better things to say
Than, "You look like shit, what's your problem, bitch?
You're legs feel like sandpaper, you can't do anything right"
'Coz that day, never should have taken place
'Coz this day, in my life still cannot explain
Why I listened in the first place to you?
Oh yeah, something else
I hope one day you call up your father
And you have the guts to tell him, how he hurt you
And he made you hurt another
