Ænes
Ænes is a village in Kvinnherad municipality in Hordaland county, Norway. The village is located on the southeastern shore of the Hardangerfjorden at the mouth of the Maurangsfjorden. Ænes Church is located in the village. There has been a church located here since the Middle Ages.
The village sits at the northern end of the small Ænesdalen valley, through which the river Æneselva runs. The border for Folgefonna National Park lies at the southern end of the valley, just a few kilometers south of Ænes.

The Nintendo Entertainment System (also abbreviated as NES) is an 8-bit home video game console that was developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was initially released in Japan as the Family Computer (Japanese: ファミリーコンピュータ, Hepburn: Famirī Konpyūta) (also known by the portmanteau abbreviation Famicom (ファミコン, Famikon) and abbreviated as FC) on July 15, 1983, and was later released in North America during 1985, in Europe during 1986, and Australia in 1987. In South Korea, it was known as the Hyundai Comboy (현대 컴보이 Hyeondae Keomboi) and was distributed by SK Hynix which then was known as Hyundai Electronics. It was succeeded by the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
The best-selling gaming console of its time, the NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983. With the NES, Nintendo introduced a now-standard business model of licensing third-party developers, authorizing them to produce and distribute titles for Nintendo's platform.

But the NES has entirely dominated the American console market since its tentative debut at the end of 1985. It hasn't run the race without competition, but it's lacked a serious challenger to this point. Beginning in August 1989, though, Nintendo has to deal with powerful new rivals on all fronts.
Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx-16 launch this month in history, unflinchingly presenting game fanatics with genuinely more capable console hardware. And on the handheld front, Nintendo's brand new Game Boy portable arrives neck-and-neck with Atari's Lynx, a device that undeniably possesses more horsepower and a better screen than Game Boy (including color). Some of these competitors would fare better than others, but there's simply no denying that the NES no longer represents the only game in town, both figuratively and literally.
In this episode, I pause a moment to look back at where the NES has been and how it got to the point that it enjoys now, and look at the looming shape of things to come.

After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.

While all aspects of the original 30 NES games are intact, Suspend Points have been added to streamline the experience of playing them. At any point during gameplay, simply press the console’s Reset button to return to the HOME Menu and save a Suspend Point that will let you pick up right where you left off. Up to four Suspend Points can be saved per game, so you can track the progress of multiple players or file away your favorite moments. This is great news for parents, as their kids won’t be able to use the “I’ll be there when I get to the next save point!” excuse any more when dinner is ready.

It's August 1989 and the NES is on top of the world (or at least unstoppable in the U.S., anyway). This is the ideal console. You may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
Things are about to change radically here in the NES Works chronology, though. I mean, the NES itself has another five years of life left in it—that's not about to change. But the NES has entirely dominated the American console market since its tentative debut at the end of 1985. It hasn't run the race without competition, but it's lacked a serious challenger to this point. Beginning in August 1989, though, Nintendo has to deal with powerful new rivals on all fronts.
Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx-16 launch this month in history, unflinchingly presenting game fanatics with genuinely more capable console hardware. And on the handheld front, Nintendo's brand new Game Boy portable arrives neck-and-neck with Atari's Lynx, a device that undeniably possesses more horsepower and a better screen than Game Boy (including color). Some of these competitors would fare better than others, but there's simply no denying that the NES no longer represents the only game in town, both figuratively and literally.
In this episode, I pause a moment to look back at where the NES has been and how it got to the point that it enjoys now, and look at the looming shape of things to come.

After years of focusing on the best games for the NES, I decided to change gears and focus on lesser known cartridges that have, for one reason or another, generally escaped the public discussion and general nostalgia. This series highlights many of the relatively unknown, obscure, and unloved titles in the Nintendo Entertainment System's library. Some of these games are at best mediocre. Many are painfully bad, some of the worst NES games around. Most are hilarious for all the wrong reasons! Occasionally, OCCASIONALLY, a handful of them are actually good, borderline hidden gems.
While you won't find any of these on the NES Classic, some of these titles have managed to make their way onto the Nintendo Switch, so if you don't have an original Nintendo console or ROMs escape you ethically or technologically, there are several ways to play them.

Whether you have fond NES memories or want to introduce yourself and your kids to the video games that made Nintendo a household name, you’ll love the compact and attractive console. The hub of the NES Classic Edition is the HOME Menu, which can be used to access all 30 of the classic NES games. From here, you can adjust various settings or just dive into a game and start playing. To help locate games quickly and easily, you can press the Select button to sort by title, two-player games, recently played games, number of times played, release date and publisher.
To make sure every Goomba stomp looks as authentic as possible, all games can be played in three display modes. With the CRT filter, a scan-line effect is added to the screen to give everything that oh-so-retro look and feel. 4:3 is a sharp, clean look that adheres to the original aspect ratio used by the NES. And when playing in Pixel Perfect mode, every pixel is shown as a perfect square, providing the most accurate representation of the games as they were originally designed.
Retro gaming is defined in part by the search for save spots and the need to enter long passwords, but in practice, those tasks can definitely be a little … um … time consuming. While all aspects of the original 30 NES games are intact, Suspend Points have been added to streamline the experience of playing them. At any point during gameplay, simply press the console’s Reset button to return to the HOME Menu and save a Suspend Point that will let you pick up right where you left off. Up to four Suspend Points can be saved per game, so you can track the progress of multiple players or file away your favorite moments. This is great news for parents, as their kids won’t be able to use the “I’ll be there when I get to the next save point!” excuse any more when dinner is ready.
