Eike Fuhrken Batista da Silva (Portuguese: [ˈejki ˈfuʁkẽj bɐˈtʃistɐ dɐ 'siwvɐ]; born 3 November 1956) is a Brazilian business magnate who made and lost a fortune in mining and oil and gas exploration. Presently, he is the chairman of Brazilian conglomerate EBX Group. The group includes five companies that trade on the BOVESPA's Novo Mercado, a special segment of the São Paulo stock market. These five companies are: OGX (oil and gas), MPX (energy), LLX (logistics), MMX (mining) and OSX (offshore services and equipment).
In early 2012, Batista had a net worth of $30.0 billion, making him the seventh wealthiest person in the world and the richest in Brazil. By July 2013, his wealth had plummeted to $200 million due to his debts and company's falling stock prices. Bloomberg reported in January 2014 that Batista "has a negative net worth." Forbes and Folha de S.Paulo quoted Batista in September 2014 stating that his negative net worth was –$1 billion.
Batista is one of seven children of businessman Eliezer Batista da Silva, who was Minister of Mines and Energy in the João Goulart and Fernando Collor administrations and a former president of Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, then wholly a state enterprise, between 1961–1964 and 1979–1986. His mother, Jutta Fuhrken, was born in Germany and, from her, Batista says he learned self-esteem and discipline, attributes he considers crucial to his formation as an entrepreneur. After spending his childhood in Brazil, Batista and his family moved to Europe when he was a teenager, due to his father's occupation. They lived in Geneva, Düsseldorf and Brussels.
Eike is a village in Karmøy municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located along the western shore of the Førresfjorden, just southeast of the town of Haugesund. The village of Eike, lies just south of the border with the neighboring municipality of Tysvær. Eike is considered part of the larger urban area of Førre, which is centered over the border in Tysvær. The village of Norheim lies about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the west and the village of Vormedal lies about 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) to the southwest.
"Faroeste Caboclo" (English: Caboclo western) is a song composed by Renato Russo and recorded by Brazilian rock band Legião Urbana. Written in 1979, the song was released in 1987 in the album Que País É Este.
The song is a lengthy ballad, in the vein of Bob Dylan, that tells the story of João de Santo Cristo, a poor man from the Brazilian Northeast who moves to Brasília in search of a better life, gets involved in drug trafficking, briefly abandons the life of crime for the love of a woman and is finally murdered by a rival.
Despite its unusual characteristics for a folk song (168 different lines, no chorus and 9 minutes of playing time), "Faroeste Caboclo" was a smash hit.
It is widely regarded as a Brazilian rock classic. A film adaptation was released in 2013.
The music starts with the introduction of João do Santo Cristo and his twisted childhood. João lost his father, murdered by a soldier (it is unclear if was the Military Police or the Brazilian Army, since the music was written during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship) and, while growing up, he got himself flirting with the criminal life, stealing the "donation money" of the church, having sex with all the girls of the city and, when he was 15 years old, he was sent to a correctional facility, where he started to think about the discrimination against his social condition and his skin color.
Batista is a Spanish or Portuguese surname (although in Portuguese more common in the spelling Baptista), literally meaning "batiste". It is also used as a middle name.
