The De Beers Group of Companies has a leading role in the diamond exploration, diamond mining, diamond retail, diamond trading and industrial diamond manufacturing sectors. The company is currently active in every category of diamond mining: open-pit, underground, large-scale alluvial, coastal and deep sea. The company operates in 28 countries and mining takes place in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Canada. De Beers currently sells approximately 35% of the world’s rough diamond production through its distribution subsidiary, DTC.
The company was founded in 1888 by British businessman Cecil Rhodes, who was financed by the South African diamond magnate Alfred Beit and the London-based N M Rothschild & Sons bank. In 1926, Ernest Oppenheimer, a German immigrant to Britain who had earlier founded mining giant Anglo American plc with American financier J.P. Morgan, was elected to the board of De Beers. He built and consolidated the company's global monopoly over the diamond industry until his death in 1957. During this time, he was involved in a number of controversies, including price fixing, antitrust behaviour and an allegation of not releasing industrial diamonds for the US war effort during World War II.

Diamonds are often synonymous with love, glamour, and longevity. Believe it or not, they weren't always the coveted rocks we know them as today. For that, we have the De Beers Group of Companies. From their ambitious start in African mines, to the American offices of N.W. Ayer & Son, De Beers has managed to influence the public's perception of these gemstones (for better or worse) in a big way. Diamonds are much, much more common than you think and, in fact, are relatively WORTHLESS ! Another British Royals CONfidence GAME! Corporate advertising, marketing and promotional campaigns along with the help of British royalty and Hollywood propaganda artists have created a perceived need for diamonds in the mind of the public. The true value of diamonds is very nominal since the stones are quite plentiful and have very limited uses. Yet prices for the carbon stones have been driven up by the cartels that hoard diamonds in order to constrict the supply, thereby creating an artificial scarcity and driving prices exhorbitantly high. As you will see, the diamond dealers can hardly contain their laughter... Clip from the 1994 PBS Public Domain documentary "The Diamond Empire". The entire...

THE DIAMOND EMPIRE EDWARD EPSTEIN, Author, "The Rise and Fall of Diamonds": Well, what I learned was that the diamond business wasn't a business of extracting, as I originally expected, something of enormous value and then simply seeing how much of this object you could get out of the ground and selling it. That was what the business appeared to be when I started my venture. But their real business was restricting what came out of the ground, restricting what was discovered, restricting what got cut, restricting what actually found its way into the retail market and, at the same time, through movies, through advertising, through Hollywood, through the manipulation of perceptions, creating the idea that there was this enormous demand for these shiny little objects that they seemed to hav...

A diamond rush is a period of feverish migration of workers to an area that has had a discovery of diamonds. Major diamond rushes took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in South Africa and South-West Africa. Kimberley is the capital of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Boer War. Notable personalities such as Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnatomade their fortunes here, and the roots of the De Beers company can also be traced to the early days of the mining town. In 1866, Erasmus Jacobs found a small brilliant pebble on the banks of the Orange River, on the farm De Kalk lea...
Marine diamond mining vessel "Peace in Africa" The Mafuta is a diamond-mining ship owned and operated by De Beers in the western coast of South Africa. Built in 1983 as Dock Express 20 for Dock Express Shipping (later Dockwise), the semi-submersible multirole heavy lift vessel was converted to the world's largest cable layer in 1993. In 2005 she was purchased by De Beers, converted to a subsea diamond mining ship by A&P; Tyne over the course of 11 months. The ship's new name, Peace in Africa, implies that it is providing an alternative to blood diamonds. Presentation by D.T. Cochrane, a PhD student at the Graduate Programme of Social and Political Thought, York University. ABSTRACT. Through the early-20th century, the power of the De Beers' diamond cartel was dwindling. Its resurrection came with WWII. The company's reversal of fortune required the construction and maintenance of relations with romantic couples, industrial diamond users, multiple government agencies and diamonds themselves. This presentation will examine De Beers' accumulation and the translation of these qualitative relationships into capital. This presentation is the fourth in a four-part Speaker Series on the Capitalist Mode of Power. The series is organized by http://capitalaspower.com and sponsored by the York Department of Political Science and the Graduate Program...

Marketing has significantly affected the image of diamond as a valuable commodity. W. Ayer & Son, the advertising firm retained by De Beers in the mid-20th century, succeeded in reviving the American diamond market. And the firm created new markets in countries where no diamond tradition had existed before. N. W. Ayer's marketing included product placement, advertising focused on the diamond product itself rather than the De Beers brand, and associations with celebrities and royalty. Without advertising the De Beers brand, De Beers was advertising its competitors' diamond products as well.[74...
