We've been gleefully checking off a (rusted, sludge-filled) bucket list lately, and after the likes of Earth and Boris – not to mention some prominent come hither advances over the years – it's a pleasure to bring you the mighty Sunn O))) in concert. Few artists embody an entire scene/sound like Sunn do; they're a byword for everything that's good and great in doom for a reason. Ahead of a four day curatorial stint at Le Guess Who? and the imminent Kannon LP, their first non-collaborative record since 2009, we shot Stephen O'Malley's doom demigods in Berlin.
Black robes, dry ice, riffs played ultra-slow and ultra-heavy, and decibel levels so immense that even Mary Anne Hobbs struggled to withstand: what more could you want?

Sunn O)))
Sunn O))) (pronounced simply sun /sʌn/) is an American drone metal band from Seattle, Washington that formed in 1998. The band is primarily known for its synthesis of diverse genres including drone, ambient, noise, extreme metal and for its extremely loud live performances. Supported by a varying cast of collaborators, the band was formed by two core members: Stephen O'Malley (also of Khanate and Burning Witch) and Greg Anderson (of Goatsnake and Engine Kid).
History
Sunn O))) is named after the Sunn amplifier brand, whose logo includes a circle next to the "SUNN" banner with waves heading off to the right. In interviews, Stephen O'Malley stated that the band's moniker was also chosen as a play on the name Earth, a band widely regarded as pioneers of drone metal throughout the 1990s. Before the band members moved to Los Angeles, it briefly used the moniker Mars.
The band's style is characterized by extremely slow tempos, heavily distorted guitars, avoidance of rhythm and melody, and alternate tunings. The guitars are notable for their low register, frequently utilising tunings as low as dropped A. Additionally, the band is known for using resonant feedback to create monolithic soundscapes and eerie atmospheres. Percussion is almost never incorporated, with a lack of any discernible beat. When performing live, the band wear robes, fill the air with fog, and play at an extremely high volume.

Sunn
Sunn amplifiers was a brand of musical instrument amplifiers. Sunn was based in Tualatin, Oregon.
History
In early 1963, the Kingsmen, a band based in Portland, Oregon, became known for their hit version of the song "Louie, Louie". After its hit single, the band soon embarked on a 50-state national tour. Because the band was used to playing small hops and school dances, many of the members found themselves ill-equipped with the amplifiers that they were currently using. Bassist Norm Sundholm discovered that his bass amp was not nearly powerful enough to play larger concert halls.
Sundholm enlisted the help of his brother Conrad to help solve his problem. By 1964, the Sundholm brothers had designed a high-powered concert bass amplifier. By 1965, the demand for Sundholm's amplifiers had increased to the point where the family garage could no longer be used as the manufacturing facility. Thus, the Sunn Musical Equipment Company was founded.
The band Sunn O))) was named after the company (to the point of including a typographic representation of the logo) and Gross National Productions who were the East Coast promo band for Sunn amps in 1971.

After having been involved with the Southern Lord and Ajna Offensive labels, since 2011 O’Malley is the curating force behind Ideologic Organ, which also serves as a nom de plume for his art direction and design activities.

We've been gleefully checking off a (rusted, sludge-filled) bucket list lately, and after the likes of Earth and Boris – not to mention some prominent come hither advances over the years – it's a pleasure to bring you the mighty Sunn O))) in concert. Few artists embody an entire scene/sound like Sunn do; they're a byword for everything that's good and great in doom for a reason. Ahead of a four day curatorial stint at Le Guess Who? and the imminent Kannon LP, their first non-collaborative record since 2009, we shot Stephen O'Malley's doom demigods in Berlin.

The massive wave-pools Sunn O))) create are more akin to the precisely oscillating soundscapes of minimalist drone composer Tony Conrad than some flint-fingered pseudo-Sabbath acolytes. Tapping into complex compositional practices without ditching metal's compelling visual aesthetic, the L.A./New York duo excavates and expands the genre, remapping its coordinates with the lowest frequencies imaginable, in the process mutating its compositional scope: an insistent, visceral buzz transforms sludge drifts into chiropractic chords that strike like thunder cracks. Loud though rarely harsh, the sounds start low, intensifying incrementally until they've transformed the entire listening area into a dank chamber teeming with elegant sustain. The black-metal inflected record, legitimately their best proper album to date, garnered New York Times coverage, Reichian exegesis in Artforum, shows at the Walker Art Center, and interviews for Swedish National TV and radio.
Arguably it also sparked increased interest in USBM and avant black metal, something that's also been fostered via Anderson's Southern Lord record label, which has released and reissued important records by Craft, Lurker Of Chalice, Nortt, Xasthur, Striborg, Twilight (as well as non-black metal acts like Earth, Oren Ambarchi, Thrones, and The Hidden Hand).
O'Malley, who has been a well-regarded graphic designer since the mid-'90s, has lent distinct architectural deconstructions to Southern Lord (and other) album covers, flyers, advertisements, and clothing. Sunn 0))) has stepped further into the art world through collaborations with modern-gothic salt-sculptor Banks Violette, including the Six Channel Bleed piece in Rodolf Jansenn Gallery in Brussels and a major work at Maureen Paley in London. They are currently working together for a two gallery show in New York for June 07 at Barbara Gladstone and Team Galleries. Additionally, O'Malley recently completed a forthcoming theater piece with French director-choreographer Gisèle Vienne, the author Dennis Cooper, and laptop destroyer Peter Rehberg, a.k.a. Pita.
