Fitzgibbon, Queensland

Fitzgibbon is a suburb north of the Brisbane central business district in Queensland, Australia. The suburb is one of the smallest suburbs in Brisbane and was named after Abram Fitzgibbon, who was chief engineer of railways in Queensland in the 1860s. The suburb is roughly triangular in shape, and is bounded by the North Coast railway, Cabbage Tree Creek, and Telegraph Road. It is a rather new residential area, having been mostly subdivided in the 1980s and 1990s.

In the 2011 census, Fitzgibbon recorded a population of 3,288 people, 53.7% female and 46.3% male.

The median age of the Fitzgibbon population was 35 years of age, 2 years below the Australian median.

62.3% of people living in Fitzgibbon were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 69.8%; the next most common countries of birth were New Zealand 5.5%, India 4.2%, England 3.6%, Philippines 3.4%, China 2.1%.

73.7% of people spoke only English at home; the next most popular languages were 2.8% Cantonese, 1.8% Tagalog, 1.6% Hindi, 1.5% Mandarin, 1.4% Samoan.

Fitzgibbon Cup

The Fitzgibbon Cup (Irish: Corn Mhic Giobúin) is the trophy for the premier hurling championship among higher education institutions (universities, colleges and institutes of technology) in Ireland. The Fitzgibbon Cup competition is administered by Comhairle Ard Oideachais Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (CLG), the GAA's Higher Education Council. Comhairle Ard Oideachais CLG also oversees the Ryan Cup (Division 2 Hurling Championship), the Fergal Maher Cup (Division 3 Hurling Championship) and the Padraig MacDiarmada Cup hurling competitions. The GAA Higher Education Cups are sponsored by the Independent.ie.

History

The cup is named after Dr. Edwin Fitzgibbon, a Capuchin friar and, from 1911 to 1936, a professor of philosophy at University College Cork. In 1912 Dr. Fitzgibbon donated most of his annual salary to purchase the trophy. The cup was made at William Egan and Sons' silversmiths, Cork, and bears a large inscription of the date 'Feb. 1912' on its front. It was a 24-inch-tall, large silver trophy, with a round base and a stem that narrowed and then expanded again in support of a wide spherical body, with Old Celtic tracing designs featuring around the edges. It had a circular, open head, on which was placed a detachable lid. The lid was lost on the night of the 1973 tournament final at Galway and has never been replaced.

Institute of Technology, Carlow

Founded in 1970, IT Carlow is located in the centre of Ireland’s South Leinster region (containing the counties of Carlow, Wicklow, Wexford, Kildare, Laois and Kilkenny), approximately one hour from Dublin. IT Carlow is the fourth-largest Institute out of 14 Institutes of Technology (IoTs) in the country (7,000 learners), but has ranked in the top three of the 14 IoTs for CAO first preferences for Level 8 honours degree programmes since 2010. IT Carlow provides higher educational full-time taught programmes from level 6 – 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications, along with research programmes at level 9 & 10 and enterprise development opportunities, through its centres in Carlow and Wexford. The Institute also provides part-time programmes in Carlow, Wexford, Wicklow, Kilkenny, Kildare (the Curragh), Shannon, Dublin (Tallaght) and, most recently, in Mayo.

The Institute is a key driver of progress and development in Carlow and the southeast and was an important consideration in the decision of UNUM (strategic software services centre, 2008) and Merck Sharp & Dohme (human vaccines and biologics, 2007) to locate in Carlow.

Jamie Wall

Jamie Wall (born 15 April 1977 in Chester) is a British auto racing driver. His best years in motor sports were at a young age.

Racing career

He started racing in karting in Britain, Europe and the World Championship. In 1995 he first raced saloon cars in the Ford Credit Fiesta Championship. In 1996 he raced in both the Rover Coupe Turbo Cup and the Ford Fiesta Challenge.

His most famous moment was a drive in the prestigious British Touring Car Championship in 1997. He raced an ex-works Vauxhall Cavalier for the Mint Motorsport team, finishing fourth in the Total Independents Cup with 168 points.

He spent two years driving in the Australian Super Touring Championship in an independent Honda Accord. In 2001 he drove in the Asia-Pacific Le Mans Series, in a Pilbeam-Nissan. This was followed by a drive in the 2003 Late Model US Stock Car Championship.
