Wim Hof is a person who has broken a lot of world-records by confronting his body with extreme low temperatures. He was even submerged into ice on the TEDxAmsterdam stage in 2010. He was a medical mystery, but not anymore. His body and technique became a subject for scientific research. In this talk he shares what he tought science, that his technique can help others attain results that were former mysteries and what the implications are.
By the time Wim reached his teenage years, he was already running barefoot through the snow, comfortably.. It was the beginning of a large series of confrontations with the cold, where every single time, limits were tested, stunning the outside world. Wim Hof (born 1959) is able to perform exceptionally, almost unnatural, on what he is focused on. Due to our lifestyle today we are far removed from our natural bodily condition. We breathe much more shallow which means that our body is not optimally supplied with oxygen.. According to Wim, it’s not complicated at all: "What I am capable of, everybody can learn".
He accomplished 21 Guinness World Records with the most exceptional and unique performances.
Scientists around the world baffled by this exceptional performance. In the Netherlands, Prof. Maria Hopman of the UMC St Radboud Nijmegen examined Wim’s physiology as he was affected by the cold, while he was up to his neck in a cylinder filled with ice cubes.

Luke is a communication studies major at Furman University. Luke has served as Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)'s National Youth Chairman since 2009. As MDA National Youth Chairman, Luke spearheads the efforts of thousands of teenagers and young adults who help with MDA's lifesaving mission. He supports MDA through appearances at sponsor and volunteer events and through media interviews. Previously, Luke served as the MDA National Goodwill Ambassador in 2006 and 2007 and as the MDA Harley-Davidson Goodwill Ambassador in 2008.
At Furman, Luke is a mentoring fellow with Furman's Shucker Leadership Institute and is Executive Producer for Furman's student television network, FTV-2. Mitochondrion
The mitochondrion (plural mitochondria) is a double membrane-bound organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. The word mitochondrion comes from the Greek μίτος, mitos, i.e. "thread", and χονδρίον—, chondrion, i.e. "granule" or "grain-like".
Mitochondria are commonly between 0.75 and 3μm in diameter but vary considerably in size and structure. Unless specifically stained, they are not visible. Mitochondria have been described as "the powerhouse of the cell" because they generate most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. In addition to supplying cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in other tasks, such as signaling, cellular differentiation, and cell death, as well as maintaining control of the cell cycle and cell growth. Mitochondria have been implicated in several human diseases, including mitochondrial disorders,cardiac dysfunction, and heart failure. A recent University of California study including ten children diagnosed with severe autism suggests that autism may be correlated with mitochondrial defects.

Cancer cell
Cancer cells are cells that grow and divide at an unregulated, quick pace. Although cancer cells can be quite common in a person, they are only malignant when the other cells (particularly natural killer cells) fail to recognize and/or destroy them. In the past a common belief was that cancer cells failed to be recognized and destroyed because of a weakness in the immune system. However more recent research has shown that the failure to recognize cancer cells is caused by the lack of particular co-stimulated molecules that aid in the way antigens react with lymphocytes.
Causes
By researching stem cells scientists have suggested that too much SP2 protein may turn stem cells into cancer cells. Other issues thought to play a role in the spread of cancer include viruses, immune system issues, genetics, environment and age. However, a lack of particular co-stimulated molecules that aid in the way antigens react with lymphocytes can impair the natural killer cells ability and ultimately cause cancer.

Wim Hof
Wim Hof (born 20 April 1959) is a Dutch daredevil, commonly nicknamed "The Iceman" for his ability to withstand extreme cold. Research has shown that Wim Hof is able to control his autonomic nervous system and this ability can be learned.
Early life
Hof was born in Sittard, Limburg. He has six brothers and two sisters.
Feats
Hof holds 20 world records, including a world record for longest ice bath. Wim describes his ability to withstand extreme cold temperatures as being able to "turn his own thermostat up" by using his mind through yoga.
2007: He climbed to 6.7 kilometres (22,000 ft) altitude at Mount Everest wearing nothing but shorts and shoes, but failed to reach the summit due to a recurring foot injury.
2008: He broke his previous world record by staying immersed in ice for 1 hour, 13 minutes and 48 seconds at Guinness World Records 2008. The night before, he performed the feat on the Today Show.
2009: In February Hof reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in his shorts within two days. Hof completed a full marathon (42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi)), above the arctic circle in Finland, in temperatures close to −20 °C (−4 °F). Dressed in nothing but shorts, Hof finished in 5 hours and 25 minutes. The challenge was filmed by Firecrackerfilms, who make productions for BBC, Channel 4 and National Geographic.

Cancer Cells Die with Erythrose Erythrose (C4H8O4) is a sugar, 2/3 of glucose (C6H12O6) with similar structure, and can be used for respiration to CO2 and H2O, no residue. Erythrose - anti tumor without pathology damage in mice. Lili Liu, Tao Yi and Xia Zhao 2015. Antitumor effect of D-Erythrose in an abdominal metastatic model of colon carcinoma ONCOLOGY LETTERS 9: 769-773, 2015. For normal cell lines (HUVEC and HDF) cultivation, up to 30mM, Erythrose is similar to glucose for cell number and cell death. The effective concentration (~ 4mM) of Erythrose for cancer death is much lower than glucose in our body. Diabetes can tolerate 30mM blood glucose for days. There is no difference in sugar metabolism of a mouse cell or a human cell. We can deliver effective Erythrose to any where in our body, and cancer cells die without damage normal. Cells, Cancer, and Respiration Cells are basic block of our body, include dividing and non-dividing cells. Non-dividing cells are formed by dividing cells. Normally, when our body is to grow, repair, or renew, dividing cells divide to form non-dividing cells. Otherwise, dividing cells stay dormant. After dividing, a new cell can continue dividing, become dormant, or differentiate to a specialized cell, a non-dividing functional cell, to support body’s function, such as skin for protection, etc. Dividing cells have no function, but form non-dividing cells. Without dividing cells, we can be alive, but not very long, because non-dividing functional cells age and die. Cell division is essential for our life to continue. Cancer cells divide, may invade to other organs and divide there, but not form non-dividing functional cells for our body. The contrast of cancer cell is normal dividing cell, not normal non-dividing cell. Normal non-dividing cell is not comparable to cancer. The difference of cancer from normal dividing (normal proliferative) cell is that the normal dividing cell can be dormant, divide, or differentiate. Cancer cell can be dormant or divide, but not differentiate. Differentiated (non-dividing) cell is not cancer. For a life essential organ, its functions depend on the number of functional cells, the number changes with dying and renewing cells. Cancer accelerates functional cell death. More damage needs more repair, and more cell division. Cancer may impair normal renew. Cancer could cause permanent damage. Cancer cells die ≠ recover. Cancer is from and part of our body. The changes of cancer cell in genetics (DNA) and biochemical processes are much less than 0.1%. The flawed and damaged cancer cells do not differentiate. All Cells Depend on Energy to Survive. Without Energy, Cells Die. There are two major energy processes in our body, respiration and fermentation. Glucose is universal fuel of our body. Respiration: Glucose à CO2 and H2O, mainly in Mitochondria. Fermentation: Glucose à lactate in Cytosol (cell plasma). Most cells in our body can obtain energy through both respiration and fermentation. Differentiated (non-dividing) cells mainly depend on respiration. Dividing (both normal and cancer) cells mainly depend on fermentation. Not all cells mainly depending on fermentation divide. But all cells mainly depending on respiration do not divide. Increasing cellular respiration, cell division will be stopped. In our cells, respiration mainly occurs in Mitochondria. Dividing cells (cancer and normal) mainly depend on fermentation. Mitochondria respiration is suppressed in dividing cells naturally. Many aerobic bacteria have no mitochondria, but have respiration – Cytosolic Respiration. Cancer cells have high oxidative, an advantage for cytosolic respiration. Increase mitochondria and/or cytosolic respiration will stop cell division and affect cell differentiation. Cancer cells, have mutations in DNA, are damaged and flawed comparing to normal cells. The flawed and damaged cancer cells have no adaption for increasing cellular respiration. Glucose is universal fuel of our body. Cancer cells love sugar, and take more sugar than normal cells. Erythrose is a sugar, can increase cellular respiration. Scientists around the world baffled by this exceptional performance. In the Netherlands, Prof. Maria Hopman of the UMC St Radboud Nijmegen examined Wim’s physiology as he was affected by the cold, while he was up to his neck in a cylinder filled with ice cubes.

All tested cancer cells die with Erythrose. Wang X and Wei Y 2010 “Erythrose kill cancer cell in vitro and inhibit tumor growth in vivo” American Association for Cancer Research 101th Conference.
Erythrose - anti tumor without pathology damage in mice. Lili Liu, Tao Yi and Xia Zhao 2015. Antitumor effect of D-Erythrose in an abdominal metastatic model of colon carcinoma ONCOLOGY LETTERS 9: 769-773, 2015.
For normal cell lines (HUVEC and HDF) cultivation, up to 30mM, Erythrose is similar to glucose for cell number and cell death.
The effective concentration (~ 4mM) of Erythrose for cancer death is much lower than glucose in our body. Diabetes can tolerate 30mM blood glucose for days.
There is no difference in sugar metabolism of a mouse cell or a human cell. We can deliver effective Erythrose to any where in our body, and cancer cells die without damage normal.

Cells are basic block of our body, include dividing and non-dividing cells.
Non-dividing cells are formed by dividing cells. Normally, when our body is to grow, repair, or renew, dividing cells divide to form non-dividing cells. Otherwise, dividing cells stay dormant.
After dividing, a new cell can continue dividing, become dormant, or differentiate to a specialized cell, a non-dividing functional cell, to support body’s function, such as skin for protection, etc.
Dividing cells have no function, but form non-dividing cells. Without dividing cells, we can be alive, but not very long, because non-dividing functional cells age and die. Cell division is essential for our life to continue.
Cancer cells divide, may invade to other organs and divide there, but not form non-dividing functional cells for our body.
The contrast of cancer cell is normal dividing cell, not normal non-dividing cell. Normal non-dividing cell is not comparable to cancer.
The difference of cancer from normal dividing (normal proliferative) cell is that the normal dividing cell can be dormant, divide, or differentiate. Cancer cell can be dormant or divide, but not differentiate. Differentiated (non-dividing) cell is not cancer.
For a life essential organ, its functions depend on the number of functional cells, the number changes with dying and renewing cells. Cancer accelerates functional cell death. More damage needs more repair, and more cell division. Cancer may impair normal renew. Cancer could cause permanent damage. Cancer cells die ≠ recover.
Cancer is from and part of our body. The changes of cancer cell in genetics (DNA) and biochemical processes are much less than 0.1%. The flawed and damaged cancer cells do not differentiate.
All Cells Depend on Energy to Survive. Without Energy, Cells Die. There are two major energy processes in our body, respiration and fermentation. Glucose is universal fuel of our body. Respiration: Glucose à CO2 and H2O, mainly in Mitochondria. Fermentation: Glucose à lactate in Cytosol (cell plasma). Most cells in our body can obtain energy through both respiration and fermentation.
Differentiated (non-dividing) cells mainly depend on respiration. Dividing (both normal and cancer) cells mainly depend on fermentation. Not all cells mainly depending on fermentation divide. But all cells mainly depending on respiration do not divide. Increasing cellular respiration, cell division will be stopped.
In our cells, respiration mainly occurs in Mitochondria. Dividing cells (cancer and normal) mainly depend on fermentation. Mitochondria respiration is suppressed in dividing cells naturally.
Many aerobic bacteria have no mitochondria, but have respiration – Cytosolic Respiration. Cancer cells have high oxidative, an advantage for cytosolic respiration.
Increase mitochondria and/or cytosolic respiration will stop cell division and affect cell differentiation. Cancer cells, have mutations in DNA, are damaged and flawed comparing to normal cells. The flawed and damaged cancer cells have no adaption for increasing cellular respiration.

The Glucose carbon Chain splits into two
Takes Phosphate from two ATP to use
NAD+ becomes NADH
And 4 ADP takes back the Phosphate
That gives a 2 ATP net gain (After subtracting the original)
What remains is known as Pyruvate.

This presentation examines the interstices of mysticism, mothering/hospitality and community organizing in the lives of women of African descent in Brazil and the United States – a confluence about which there is little extant scholarship. Using an analytical framework that incorporates history of religions of the Afro-Atlantic diaspora, ethnographic and historical studies of contemporary social justice movements, oral histories, and womanist ethics, my work explores the moral and mystic universe of contemporary Afro-Brazilian and African American women activists.
A collaboration between Africana Studies and the Brazil Initiative, with the generous co-sponsorship of the Watson Institute, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, the Center for Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, and Religious Studies.

SHOW DESCRIPTION:
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to explore the eye, navigate through the brain or hang on as blood surges past you from the heart's valves, this fantastic voyage for you. You'll travel through a cell, into the nucleus, and watch as a virus attacks.
In Microcosm an armada of nanoshells, displayed as yellow submarines, sets out in the blood stream, through the eye, ear and brain, in search of a deadly virus. The virus is found, a fierce battle wages over the Planetarium dome, and the patient is saved.
Microcosm uses the latest discoveries of nanoscale science to create a voyage that is realistic and possible for inner space probes only a few nanometers wide. The experience is incredible, but so is the technology that has made imaging at this scale a reality. Audiences learn about using superconductors to measure magnetic fields outside the body and about deploying gold nanoshells to the sites of tumors or infections. This nanoshell science segment makes the HMNS version of this show different from the version from Evans & Sutherland.
It's an adventure to 'inner space,' rather than outer space. Humans have experienced how far it is to the moon. And now, thanks to more Houston scientists, we can reach the genetic code inside our cells, a journey equal in scale to a trip to the moon at eight orders of magnitude.
Microcosm is produced in conjunction with Evans & Sutherland Corporation with collaboration and support from the Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology, the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology, the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering at Rice University, and the Texas Center for Superconductivity at the University of Houston.

Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name.
Connie (Constance) Brooks (Eve Arden), an English teacher at fictional Madison High School.
Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), blustery, gruff, crooked and unsympathetic Madison High principal, a near-constant pain to his faculty and students. (Conklin was played by Joseph Forte in the show's first episode; Gordon succeeded him for the rest of the series' run.) Occasionally Conklin would rig competitions at the school--such as that for prom queen--so that his daughter Harriet would win.
Walter Denton (Richard Crenna, billed at the time as Dick Crenna), a Madison High student, well-intentioned and clumsy, with a nasally high, cracking voice, often driving Miss Brooks (his self-professed favorite teacher) to school in a broken-down jalopy. Miss Brooks' references to her own usually-in-the-shop car became one of the show's running gags.
Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler on radio, billed sometimes under his birth name Ira Grossel); Robert Rockwell on both radio and television), Madison High biology teacher, the shy and often clueless object of Miss Brooks' affections.
Margaret Davis (Jane Morgan), Miss Brooks' absentminded landlady, whose two trademarks are a cat named Minerva, and a penchant for whipping up exotic and often inedible breakfasts.
Harriet Conklin (Gloria McMillan), Madison High student and daughter of principal Conklin. A sometime love interest for Walter Denton, Harriet was honest and guileless with none of her father's malevolence and dishonesty.
Stretch (Fabian) Snodgrass (Leonard Smith), dull-witted Madison High athletic star and Walter's best friend.
Daisy Enright (Mary Jane Croft), Madison High English teacher, and a scheming professional and romantic rival to Miss Brooks.
Jacques Monet (Gerald Mohr), a French teacher.
Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role.
Lucille Ball was believed to have been the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Chairman Bill Paley, who was friendly with Arden, persuaded her to audition for the part. With a slightly rewritten audition script--Osgood Conklin, for example, was originally written as a school board president but was now written as the incoming new Madison principal--Arden agreed to give the newly-revamped show a try.
Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very "feline" in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast--blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright--also received positive reviews.
Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-49, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. "I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton," she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne.
For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year after its television life ended.

My experience as a Girl Scout was short and bittersweet.When we moved to the suburbs from Philadelphia in 1969, I was recruited by the local Brownie troop to make friends, earn badges and sell cookies. I didn't last long at Troop 454, mostly because I didn't have the killer instinct to make my cookie quotas and the good-citizenship skills to avoid smashing my unsold cookie boxes in another Brownie's face ... ....
