Bowes is a village in County Durham, England. Located in the Pennine hills, it is situated close to Barnard Castle. It is built around the medieval Bowes Castle.
Bowes lies within the historic county boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, but along with the rest of the former Startforth Rural District it was incorporated into the non-metropolitan county of Durham for administrative purposes on 1 April 1974, under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972.
The A66 and A67 roads meet at Bowes.
The Roman name for Bowes was Lavatrae. A Roman army station was located there.
The only pub in the village, The Ancient Unicorn, is reputed to be haunted by several ghosts. The pub has closed down as of 2014. This 17th-century coaching inn famously played host to Charles Dickens as he toured the local area. Dickens found inspiration in the village academy, which he immortalised as Dotheboys Hall in Nicholas Nickleby; and the graves of two of the people who inspired characters portrayed by the great author remain in Bowes churchyard to this day.
Pitney Bowes Inc. is an American provider of global eCommerce solutions, shipping and mailing products, location intelligence, customer engagement and customer information management solutions. Based in Stamford, Connecticut, the company has approximately 16,100 employees worldwide. It is one of 87 existing firms that have been members of the S&P 500 since its creation in 1957.
Other major U.S. centers of operation include Danbury, Connecticut; Shelton, Connecticut; Troy, New York; and Lanham, Maryland.
In 1902, Arthur Pitney patented his first "double-locking" hand-cranked postage-stamping machine, and, with patent attorney Eugene A. Rummler, founded the Pitney Postal Machine Company. In 1908, English emigrant and founder of the Universal Stamping Machine Company Walter Bowes began providing stamp-canceling machines to the United States Postal Service. Bowes moved his operations to Stamford in 1917. A rapid increase in mail volume in 1919 made the Post Office more receptive to metered mail, and Pitney subsequently traveled to meet Bowes. On March 15, 1920, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill authorizing mechanical stamps on First-Class Mail, and on April 23, 1920, the two companies merged to form the Pitney Bowes Postage Meter Company, with the goal of producing a machine that would combine Pitney's "double-locking" counter with Bowes' system for wrapping postage payment, postmarking and cancellation. The United States Post Office approved their postage meter on August 25, 1920.
By Night is an extreme metal act from Falkenberg in Sweden, formed by André Gonzales (guitar), Simon Wien (guitar), and Per Qvarnström (drums) in 1999. After several line-up changes, bassist Henrik Persson joined and stayed, later on singer Christoffer Andersson as well. Two demos were recorded, By Night (2000) and Derelict (2001).
In 2002, Christoffer Andersson left and was replaced by Adrian Westin, singer of the band Aggressive Serpent (now called Trendkill). The band recorded the demo Lamentation, and was voted as the best unsigned band by Monster Magazine and Close-Up. In 2004, they signed with Lifeforce Records and released a split EP with Cipher System, Cipher System / By Night.
Since then they have released two albums, Burn the Flags in 2005 and A New Shape of Desperation in 2006. In 2005, they toured Europe in the We Are the Enemy Tour (with Destiny and Deadsoil) and the Monster Mosh Down Tour (with Ektomorf, Disbelief, and Betzefer). Shortly after the release of Burn the Flags, Simon Wien quit. Henrik Persson took his place as a guitarist and bassist Markus Wesslén (from Trendkill) joined. After the release of their second album they went on a third tour through Europe with fellow Lifeforce band Fall of Serenity.
A Queen mother is a dowager queen who was the mother of the reigning monarch (or an empress mother in the case of an empire). The term has been used in English since at least 1577. It arises in hereditary monarchies in Europe and is also used to describe a number of similar yet distinct monarchical concepts in non-European cultures around the world.
"The Queen Mother" usually refers to Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1900–2002 (queen, 1936–1952; queen mother, 1952–2002), who was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, and held the status of queen mother for 50 years.
A widowed queen consort, or dowager queen, has an important royal position (regardless whether or not she is the mother of the reigning sovereign) but does not normally have any rights to succeed a king as monarch on his death unless she happens to be next in line to the throne (one possibility would be if the King and Queen were also cousins and childless, the King had no other siblings, and she in her other position as his cousin was also his heiress presumptive).
A state visit is a formal visit by a head of state to a foreign country, at the invitation of that country's head of state, with the latter also acting as the official host for the duration of the state visit. Speaking for the host, it is generally called a state reception. State visits are considered to be the highest expression of friendly bilateral relations between two sovereign states, and are in general characterised by an emphasis on official public ceremonies.
Less formal visits than a state visit to another country with a lesser emphasis on ceremonial events, by either a head of state or a head of government, can be classified (in descending order of magnitude) as either an official visit, a working visit, or a private visit.
In parliamentary democracies, while heads of state in such systems of government may formally issue and accept invitations, they do so on the advice of their heads of government, who usually decides on when the invitation is to be issued or accepted in advance.

The First session from the summer investigation at Bowes Castle in County Durham. Bowes is an interesting castle, set as it is in the NW corner of the Roman Fort of Lavatris - itself said to have a ghostly Roman procession of Legionaries returning to dig up their buried looted gold Within the castle there are many spirits, perhaps the most commonly reported is the White Lady on the stairs, less reported is the Victorian Colonel or the man who hanged himself in the ruin One of my favourite locations to visit Music attribution Evening Fall Harp by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...) Biohacking is an umbrella term for the passion and mission to enhance and improve upon the human body, often with a hacker-like ethos. One arm of this comes in the form of "grinders", a growing collective of biohackers whose expertise lies in functional body modification (usually with electronic hardware) that extends their human capabilities. Welcome to the HVMN Enhancement podcast 👋 Episode 43 features Tim Cannon, a human host of multiple implants including RFID's (radio-frequency identification devices) and magnets. There is fuzziness about what data science is, and this could lead to disillusionment as the concept diffuses into meaningless buzz. Data science is intricately intertwined with other important concepts also of growing importance, such as big data and data-driven decision making. In order for data science to serve business effectively, it is important to understand its relationships to other important related concepts, and to begin to identify the fundamental principles underlying data science. This understanding will help building new data products and drive innovation.
