In computing, plain text is the data (e.g. file contents) which represent only characters of readable material but not its graphical representation nor other objects (images, etc.). It may also include a limited number of characters that control simple arrangement of text, such as line breaks or tabulation characters. Plain text is different from formatted text, where style information is included, and "binary files" in which some portions must be interpreted as binary objects (encoded integers, real numbers, images, etc.).
The encoding has traditionally been either ASCII, sometimes EBCDIC. Unicode-based encodings such as UTF-8 and UTF-16 are gradually replacing the older ASCII derivatives limited to 7 or 8 bit codes.
Files that contain markup or other meta-data are generally considered plain-text, as long as the entirety remains in directly human-readable form (as in HTML, XML, and so on (as Coombs, Renear, and DeRose argue, punctuation is itself markup)). The use of plain text rather than bit-streams to express markup, enables files to survive much better "in the wild", in part by making them largely immune to computer architecture incompatibilities.

When discussing encryption we frequently use two terms: plaintext andciphertext. The plaintext is the original message that the sender wants to securely deliver to the receiver. The ciphertext is the message that is actually transmitted over the insecure channel. Before transmission, the sender transforms the plaintext into the ciphertext—this is encryption. When the ciphertext is received, the receiver must transform the ciphertext back into the plaintext—this is decryption. To be secure, encryption and decryption must require that the sender and receiver possess some secret information or key. The goal of most encryption systems is to ensure that the ciphertext cannot be decrypted—transformed back into the plaintext—without that secret key. This prevents an adversary or anyone able t...
I recently started to use plain text files only again. It all started with the Task Management app TaskPaper that uses plain text files for quite advanced GTD. And then I learned MultiMarkDown (MMD) to create beautiful, fully formatted documents and articles in plain text. I love Plain Text. In today's audio blog I share some thoughts about using plain text when one would usually choose rich text as well as discus the KIS (keep it simple) philosophy, often seen applied in Arch Linux.
This video provides a basic summary of the differences between plain text editors like Notepad and rich text editors like Dreamweaver and Word.

Tap into the extreme power of Avid Marquee's AutoTitler, and create your entire show's lower third titles in moments! The AutoTitler tool within Avid Marquee (Avid Media Composer's titling and graphics program) allows you to use a plain text document to generate dozens, or even hundreds, of lower thirds using a preset or customized title template. This is by far one of the most powerful features within Avid Marquee! This Avid Marquee video tutorial will teach you how to: • Create an Avid title template, and appropriately set it up in preparation for use with AutoTitler • Create a plain text document with the proper specs for use with AutoTitler • Run the AutoTitler • Save generated titles to the Avid bin Access more video tutorials at http://www.premiumbeat.com/blog
The cube itself is internally tagged with six separate NFC stickers on each face. The stickers are read/writable Mifare Classic’s that can hold 1k of data. We wrote each tag with plain text JSON that contained a single colour value. In order to read the tags, we built an Android app for the Nexus S that listened for NFC tag discovery and established a socket connection to a node.js server on EC2 once the NDEF (the standard NFC data format) was parsed. It was straightforward to work with node-websocket-server (socket.io was problematic with Android) to connect to a standard HTML5 WebSocket in the client browser. Finally, we used the three.js to render the plus symbol and 3D environment in WebGL.

If you're a young punk rock fan, you would probably give an arm and a leg to have been able to see the bands that Mike Joyce has seen. If you also happen to be perusing Mike's project "Swissted," you might have a heart attack when you see in plain text that all of your favorite punk bands have played shows together. Thus is the beauty of Mike Joyce's passion project; a re-imagining of old punk show flyers in the Swiss Modernist style. As Mike explains, though it's clearly not the grungy, anarchic style typically associated with punk rock, the Swiss modernist style complements punk rock in its similar rejection of extraneous frills and self-indulgence. "Swissted" takes the ragged collage show flyers and reduces them down to the line-up, the date, and the venue with a few simple design eleme...

BHSAD students' project. According to brief we had to record and create some music composition and than make a video. We actually recorded something weird. The tutor got it's version with that sound which would never see the light of day… And here here is the versions with nice… I mean great music. I was thinking a lot about the title sequence. And I decided not to use any logos - just plain text. The idea to place the music credits ahead the director and the title was not mine. The same thing you can see in Tom Ford's "The single man" sequence.
I shot the fashion film for Simply's cover story (http://www.simplythemag.com), a Chanel beauty editorial shot by Rafa Gallar and styled by José Carlos de la Osa. The initial briefing I presented was a faux-documentary with an interview with the model on how Chanel's brand has influenced women for many years now -from Coco Chanel to Marilyn Monroe. Finally, given the usual time constraints when shooting photo and film, we decided to cut the interview and go with plain text. I'm saving the faux documentary for some other time. Film.
