Strother Douglas Martin, Jr. (March 26, 1919 – August 1, 1980), was an American character actor who often appeared in support of superstars John Wayne and Paul Newman and was memorable in Western films directed by John Ford and Sam Peckinpah. Martin perhaps is best known as the prison "captain" in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, in which he uttered the since famous line, "What we've got here is failure to communicate." The line is number 11 on the American Film Institute list of AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes.
Martin was born in Kokomo in Howard County in north central Indiana. For a short time, the Martins moved to San Antonio, Texas, but soon returned to Indiana. As a child, he excelled at swimming and diving; he was nicknamed "T-Bone Martin" because of his diving expertise. At 17, he won the National Junior Springboard Diving Championship. He served as a swimming instructor in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the diving team at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He entered the adult National Springboard Diving competition in hopes of gaining a berth on the U.S. Olympic team, but finished third in the competition.
Las Vegas Cool Hand is a Game Boy Color game that was released in 1998 to a North American and European market. A version for the original Game Boy was also released in Europe under the title Cool Hand.
This video game features blackjack, cribbage, and solitaire. Blackjack can be played by either Las Vegas Strip rules, Downtown Las Vegas rules, London rules, or Atlantic City rules. Cribbage simply requires players to earn 121 points in order to beat the dealer in five different variations of play. Solitaire requires players to remove cards in sequential order while placing them in order on the top of the screen. Other varieties of play for the solitaire round include Elevens, Calculation (also known as Broken Intervals), and Monte Carlo (also known as Weddings and Double and Quits).
The player starts out with a certain amount of pretend money that can be used to practice for the real casino. A complete instruction manual in addition to the online help provided within the cartridges helps first-time players how to play each and every individual game. Players have an option to set the number of decks, the time limit in solitaire games, along with other options that are specific to each game. Statistics are held for each game but are deleted once the console is deactivated.
Cool Hand Luke is a 1967 American prison drama film directed by Stuart Rosenberg, starring Paul Newman and featuring George Kennedy in an Oscar-winning performance. Newman stars in the title role as Luke, a prisoner in a Florida prison camp who refuses to submit to the system.
The film, set in the early 1950s, is based on Donn Pearce's 1965 novel of the same name. Pearce sold the story to Warner Brothers, who then hired him to write the script. Due to Pearce's lack of film experience, the studio added Frank Pierson to rework the screenplay. Newman's biographer Marie Edelman Borden states that the "tough, honest" script drew together threads from earlier movies, especially Hombre, Newman's earlier film of 1967. The film has been cited by Roger Ebert as an anti-establishment film which was shot during the time of the Vietnam War, in which Newman's character endures "physical punishment, psychological cruelty, hopelessness and equal parts of sadism and masochism". His influence on his prison mates and the torture that he endures is compared to that of Jesus, and Christian symbolism is used throughout the film, culminating in a photograph superimposed over crossroads at the end of the film in comparison to the crucifixion. Filming took place on the San Joaquin River Delta, and the set, imitating a southern prison farm, was built in Stockton, California. The filmmakers sent a crew to Tavares Road Prison in Tavares, Florida, to take photographs and measurements.
Paul Leonard Newman (January 26, 1925 – September 26, 2008) was an American actor, film director, entrepreneur, professional racing driver and team owner, environmentalist, activist and philanthropist. He won numerous awards, including an Academy Award for his performance in the 1986 film The Color of Money, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award, an Emmy Award, and many honorary awards. Despite being colorblind, he won several national championships as a driver in Sports Car Club of America road racing, and his race teams won several championships in open wheel IndyCar racing.
Newman was married to actress Joanne Woodward from 1958 until his death. He was a co-founder of Newman's Own, a food company from which Newman donated all post-tax profits and royalties to charity. As of 31 December 2014, these donations totaled US$429.3 million. He was also a co-founder of Safe Water Network, a nonprofit that develops sustainable drinking water solutions for those in need. In 1988, Newman founded the SeriousFun Children's Network, a global family of camps and programs for children with serious illness which has served 290,076 children since its inception.

Classic Strother Martin clip as he rants at Chong to get a job. His unforgettable voice distinguished many classic movies, most notably as the warden in "Cool Hand Luke" and his iconic "What we've got here is a failure to communicate" speech. Although not nearly as well known, this is his finest moment, as he threatens to ship him off to military school with "the GODDAMN Finkelstein shit, kid....Son of a BITCH!"

Cool Hand Luke (1967) - The Captain's speech " What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach. So you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it. . . well, he gets it. I don't like it any more than you men." Used in the song "Civil War" By Guns and Roses. Paul Newman as Lucas "Cool Hand Luke" Jackson Strother Martin as Captain The phrase "What we've got here is failure to communicate" is a quotation from the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, spoken in the movie first by Strother Martin (as the Captain, a prison warden) and later, abridged, by Paul Newman (as Luke, a stubborn prisoner). The context of the first delivery of the line is: Captain: You gonna get used to wearing them chains after a while, Luke. Don't you never stop listening to them cli...
