A new Army Leadership Code has been launched by General Sir Nick Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC Gen, Chief of the General Staff. The new code, based on the Army's core values and standards, aims to address bullying, harassment and discrimination and improve standards of leadership at every level.
WO1 Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton, the Army's most senior soldier and champion of the Army Leadership Code, will be pivotal in ensuring the code is implemented through the chain of command.
He said: “The world, society and our country is ever changing and the British Army needs to keep up with the changes. There has been in the past some unacceptable behaviour within the British Army, which we need to stamp out and the Army Leadership Code is a method for us to change our culture over time to prevent these unacceptable behaviours.
“It’s going to work under guidance of Commanding Officers (CO), hence why they are here today, supported by Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSM). And how they do it within their unit is up to them, because we are so diverse in the Army from one corps to another, that no one knows their regiment or unit better than the CO or RSM. So it’s down to them how they implement it. We just give them the methods and the tools to do so.
"A culture change is going to take time and all I know is the code can only make leadership better in the British Army.”
General Carter said: “Today is essentially about improvement, because we’re not bad at leadership. We just simply want to get better at leadership by recognising the context in which we are going to have to lead in the future and the nature of those that we are going to have to lead.”

General Sir Nicholas Houghton has been confirmed as the new head of the armed forces.
He will take over from General Sir David Richards as Chief of the Defence Staff in July, the Ministry of Defence said today.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said Gen Houghton would help drive through the Government's "radical" defence reforms.
"I am pleased to announce the appointment of the successor to the chief of the defence staff, Gen Sir David Richards," he said.
"Gen Sir Nicholas Houghton will assume this role in July 2013. I look forward to working with Sir Nicholas as we continue radical reforms to the Ministry of Defence and deliver Future Force 2020.

The Chief of the General Staff has visited Helmand to see progress on the transition of security to Afghan forces first hand.
In a special interview with British Forces News General Sir Peter Wall said decisions have still to be finalised on the extent of the British presence there post 2014. But he did confirm UK troops will be running the Afghan Officer Training Academy.

STORYLINE:
The British Chief of Staff, General Sir Mike Jackson, inspected troops in Kuwait on Friday and said his forces were "good to go" for a possible war in Iraq.
Jackson made his comments during during a visit to soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment currently based at Camp Gibraltar, the British main base in the northern Kuwaiti Desert.
Jackson told journalists that two or three more British ships were yet to arrive in the region with supplies and further forces.
However, if orders were given to go into combat in Iraq, the British troops in Kuwait were ready for action, he said.
Britain, the principal ally of the United States in the standoff with Iraq, has committed 45-thousand troops to a potential conflict in the region.

The commander of the US Army in Europe says cuts to the British Army have left it under-resourced. It comes a day after the Chief of the General Staff's admission that the regular Army is at its smallest since the days of Oliver Cromwell. Lieutenant General Ben Hodges told Forces News: "It [the Army] is not big enough... The UK has global responsibilities, just like the United States." Staff (military)
A military staff (often referred to as General Staff, Army Staff, Navy Staff or Air Staff within the individual services) is a group of officers and enlisted personnel that are responsible for the administrative, operational and logistical needs of its unit. It provides bi-directional flow of information between a commanding officer and subordinate military units. A staff also provides an executive function where it filters information needed by the commander or shunts unnecessary information.

Information management
One of the key purposes of a military staff is to provide accurate, timely information (which includes the results of contingency planning) on which command decisions are based. A goal is being able to suggest approaches or help produce well-informed decisions that will effectively manage and conserve unit resources.
In addition to generating information, the staff also manages the flow of communication within the unit and around it. While controlled information flow toward the commander is a priority, those useful or contingent in nature are communicated to lower-level units and/or through their respective staffs. If the information is not pertinent to the unit, it is redirected to the command level which can best utilize the condition or information.

British Army
The British Army is the principal land warfare force of the United Kingdom. The force was initially administered by the War Office from London, which in 1964 was subsumed into the Ministry of Defence. The professional head of the British Army is the Chief of the General Staff.
The full-time element of the British Army is referred to as the Regular Army and has been since the creation of the reservist Territorial Force in 1908. All members of the British Army swear (or affirm) allegiance to the monarch as commander-in-chief. However, the Bill of Rights of 1689 requires Parliamentary consent for The Crown to maintain a standing army in peacetime. Parliament approves the continued existence of the Army by passing an Armed Forces Act at least once every five years.
Throughout its history, the British Army has seen action in a number of major wars involving the world's great powers, including the Seven Years' War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the First World War and Second World War. Repeatedly emerging victorious from these decisive wars allowed Britain to influence world events with its policies and establish itself as one of the world's leading military and economic powers. Since the end of the Cold war, the British Army has been deployed to many conflict zones, often as part of an expeditionary force or a United Nations peacekeeping operation. Additionally, the British Army maintains several permanent overseas postings.

General officer
A general officer is an officer of high rank in the army, and in some nations' air forces or marines.
The term "general" is used in two ways: as the generic title for all grades of general officer and as a specific rank. It originates in the 16th century, as a shortening of captain general, which rank was taken from Middle French capitaine général. The adjective general had been affixed to officer designations since the late medieval period to indicate relative superiority or an extended jurisdiction.
Today, the title of "General" is known in some countries as a four-star rank. However different countries use different systems of stars for senior ranks. It has a NATO code of OF-9 and is the highest rank currently in use in a number of armies.
General officer ranks
The various grades of general officer are at the top of the military rank structure. Lower-ranking officers in land-centric military forces are typically known as field officers or field-grade officers, and below them are company-grade officers.

New Chief of the Defence Staff chosen 19.03.13
General Sir Nicholas Houghton has been confirmed as the new head of the armed forces. He will take over from General Sir David Richards as Chief of the Defence Staff in July, the Ministry of Defence said today. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said Gen Houghton would help drive through the Government's "radical" defence reforms. "I am pleased to announce the appointment of the successor to the chief of the defence staff, Gen Sir David Richards," he said. "Gen Sir Nicholas Houghton will assume this role in July 2013. I look forward to working with Sir Nicholas as we continue radical reforms to the Ministry of Defence and deliver Future Force 2020. The commander of the US Army in Europe says cuts to the British Army have left it under-resourced. It comes a day after the Chief of the General Staff's admission that the regular Army is at its smallest since the days of Oliver Cromwell. A new Army Leadership Code has been launched by General Sir Nick Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC Gen, Chief of the General Staff. The new code, based on the Army's core values and standards, aims to address bullying, harassment and discrimination and improve standards of leadership at every level.
WO1 Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton, the Army's most senior soldier and champion of the Army Leadership Code, will be pivotal in ensuring the code is implemented through the chain of command.
He said: “The world, society and our country is ever changing and the British Army needs to keep up with the changes. There has been in the past some unacceptable behaviour within the British Army, which we need to stamp out and the Army Leadership Code is a method for us to change our culture over time to prevent these unacceptable behaviours.
“It’s going to work under guidance of Commanding Officers (CO), hence why they are here today, supported by Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSM). And how they do it within their unit is up to them, because we are so diverse in the Army from one corps to another, that no one knows their regiment or unit better than the CO or RSM. So it’s down to them how they implement it. We just give them the methods and the tools to do so.
"A culture change is going to take time and all I know is the code can only make leadership better in the British Army.”
General Carter said: “Today is essentially about improvement, because we’re not bad at leadership. We just simply want to get better at leadership by recognising the context in which we are going to have to lead in the future and the nature of those that we are going to have to lead.”

The British Chief of Staff, General Sir Mike Jackson, inspected troops in Kuwait on Friday and said his forces were "good to go" for a possible war in Iraq.
Jackson made his comments during during a visit to soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment currently based at Camp Gibraltar, the British main base in the northern Kuwaiti Desert.
Jackson told journalists that two or three more British ships were yet to arrive in the region with supplies and further forces.
However, if orders were given to go into combat in Iraq, the British troops in Kuwait were ready for action, he said.
Britain, the principal ally of the United States in the standoff with Iraq, has committed 45-thousand troops to a potential conflict in the region.

London is an exciting and pulsating metropolis of the new millennium, a melting pot of both people and culture and a fascinating city of diverse contrasts.
The City Of London contains the Tower, an historic landmark with a remarkable history. A mighty medieval fortress with 13 towers that throughout its 900 years, has served many functions and from the Middle Ages, it was a heavily fortified prison.
After the medieval St. Paul's Cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in 1666, Christopher Wren was ordered to re-build it with a dome. During the 36 years of its construction, its design was frequently altered until finally a wonderful masterpiece of church architecture was created.
The Monument is the city's tallest freestanding stone column and a reminder of the Great Fire of London that destroyed 80 percent of the city. In four days, more than 13,000 buildings were destroyed and the Monument was built on the site of the bakery in which the fire began.
Since the reign of Queen Victoria, Buckingham Palace has served as London's royal residence. A garden of mulberry trees once grew on the site of today's palace and the Duke of Buckingham subsequently added a simple brick built residence. Around 60 years later, George II purchased the site for his wife and George IV eventually began to design an extensive palace complex.
The highlight of any holiday in London must be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the London Eye. Situated on the banks of the Thames, it rises high into the sky, opposite the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben.
The former centre of the largest empire in the world, London is still a city of superlatives that attracts millions of visitors each year. Exciting both day and night, London is a modern city with age old traditions and a long and colorful history.

Vice is an international magazine focused on arts, culture, and news topics. Founded in 1994 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in later years the company expanded into Vice Media, with divisions including the magazine, a website, a film production company, a record label, and a publishing imprint. As of March 2013, the magazine's editor-in-chief is Rocco Castoro[2] and its global editor is documentary filmmaker Andy Capper.[3]
The magazine's editors have championed the "Immersionist" school of journalism, regarded as a DIY antithesis to the methods practiced by mainstream news outlets, and the monthly publication is frequently focused on a single theme.
Established by Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith, and Gavin McInnes, the magazine was launched in 1994 as the Voice of Montreal with government funding, and the intention of the founders was to provide work and a community service.[4]
When the editors later sought to dissolve their commitments with the original publisher Alix Laurent, they bought him out and changed the name to Vice in 1996. In search of more streetwear advertising income, the magazine's personnel relocated to New York City in 1999.[5] Andy Capper co-founded the UK division of Vice with Andrew Creighton.
Numerous media sources reported in mid-August 2013 that Rupert Murdoch's corporation 21st Century Fox had invested US$70 million in Vice Media, resulting in a 5 percent stake. Following the announcement, Smith explained, "We have set ourselves up to build a global platform but we have maintained control

Established by Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith, and Gavin McInnes, the magazine was launched in 1994 as the Voice of Montreal with government funding, and the intention of the founders was to provide work and a community service.[4]
When the editors later sought to dissolve their commitments with the original publisher Alix Laurent, they bought him out and changed the name to Vice in 1996. In search of more streetwear advertising income, the magazine's personnel relocated to New York City in 1999.[5] Andy Capper co-founded the UK division of Vice with Andrew Creighton.
Numerous media sources reported in mid-August 2013 that Rupert Murdoch's corporation 21st Century Fox had invested US$70 million in Vice Media, resulting in a 5 percent stake. Too often services are failing to address the problems faced by women sleeping rough or in invisible homelessness conditions.
According to Alexia Murphy (Director at St Mungo’s) “Women make up 26% of people who accessed homelessness services in 2013, which in real numbers is around 10,000 people. At the sharpest end of homelessness, 786 women were recorded sleeping rough in London last year”. The overall number of people recorded sleeping rough has risen by 37% since 2010 and the exact number seems to be much higher.
We also know that “there are high levels of vulnerability within the female homeless population - mental ill-health, drug and alcohol dependencies, childhoods spent in care, experiences of sexual abuse and other traumatic life experiences are all commonplace” (Crisis.org)
With the extra cuts in welfare happening now, this can only get worse for all involved.

Sharon Poon
The Marylebone Project is the largest hostel in the United Kingdom for women affected by homelessness. Sharon runs the social enterprise arm which consists of Space in Marylebone (facilities management) and Munch in Marylebone (catering). It involves some serious stuff (internal & external marketing, strategic planning, budgeting, working with external partners) and some fun stuff (taste testing, baking).
In April 2015, Sharon became the Centre Manager which involves running the operations of the Day Centre for rough sleepers. She is responsible to run activities programme and developing more employment opportunities for service users. She creates partnership opportunities with external stakeholders for fundraising and volunteering.

Faye Shields
Faye is the founder of Unseen Tours an award-winning, not-for-profit social enterprise that offers alternative walking tours through London's most vibrant and interesting neighbourhoods, with homeless and formerly homeless guides
Each guide takes visitors through a different area of London, showing both famous landmarks and hidden gems off-the-beaten track, with their own distinctive styles, and sharing their own stories and views of homelessness.
As a social enterprise, the guides receive 60% of the ticket sales. The remaining 40% is reinvested into a common kitty out of which the guides also receive their monthly travel and mobile phone-top ups, meaning that, in real terms, they get around 80% of total ticket revenue.

The new code, based on the Army's core values and standards, aims to address bullying, harassment and discrimination and improve standards of leadership at every level. New Chief of the Defence Staff chosen 19.03.13
General Sir Nicholas Houghton has been confirmed as the new head of the armed forces. He will take over from General Sir David Richards as Chief of the Defence Staff in July, the Ministry of Defence said today. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said Gen Houghton would help drive through the Government's "radical" defence reforms. "I am pleased to announce the appointment of the successor to the chief of the defence staff, Gen Sir David Richards," he said. "Gen Sir Nicholas Houghton will assume this role in July 2013. I look forward to working with Sir Nicholas as we continue radical reforms to the Ministry of Defence and deliver Future Force 2020. The commander of the US Army in Europe says cuts to the British Army have left it under-resourced. It comes a day after the Chief of the General Staff's admission that the regular Army is at its smallest since the days of Oliver Cromwell. A new Army Leadership Code has been launched by General Sir Nick Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC Gen, Chief of the General Staff. The new code, based on the Army's core values and standards, aims to address bullying, harassment and discrimination and improve standards of leadership at every level.
WO1 Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton, the Army's most senior soldier and champion of the Army Leadership Code, will be pivotal in ensuring the code is implemented through the chain of command.
He said: “The world, society and our country is ever changing and the British Army needs to keep up with the changes. There has been in the past some unacceptable behaviour within the British Army, which we need to stamp out and the Army Leadership Code is a method for us to change our culture over time to prevent these unacceptable behaviours.
“It’s going to work under guidance of Commanding Officers (CO), hence why they are here today, supported by Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSM). And how they do it within their unit is up to them, because we are so diverse in the Army from one corps to another, that no one knows their regiment or unit better than the CO or RSM. So it’s down to them how they implement it. We just give them the methods and the tools to do so.
"A culture change is going to take time and all I know is the code can only make leadership better in the British Army.”
General Carter said: “Today is essentially about improvement, because we’re not bad at leadership. We just simply want to get better at leadership by recognising the context in which we are going to have to lead in the future and the nature of those that we are going to have to lead.”

The British Chief of Staff, General Sir Mike Jackson, inspected troops in Kuwait on Friday and said his forces were "good to go" for a possible war in Iraq.
Jackson made his comments during during a visit to soldiers of the Royal Irish Regiment currently based at Camp Gibraltar, the British main base in the northern Kuwaiti Desert.
Jackson told journalists that two or three more British ships were yet to arrive in the region with supplies and further forces.
However, if orders were given to go into combat in Iraq, the British troops in Kuwait were ready for action, he said.
Britain, the principal ally of the United States in the standoff with Iraq, has committed 45-thousand troops to a potential conflict in the region.

The commander of the US Army in Europe says cuts to the British Army have left it under-resourced. It comes a day after the Chief of the General Staff's admission that the regular Army is at its smallest since the days of Oliver Cromwell. Lieutenant General Ben Hodges told Forces News: "It [the Army] is not big enough... The UK has global responsibilities, just like the United States." Tilchin identified three core principles that guided Roosevelt's foreign policy: broadly conceived U.S. interests, the strengthening of the United States Navy, and close cooperation between Britain and the United States on a wide range of issues.[31] He had traveled widely and was well informed on international affairs, as well as military and naval affairs around the world. He was determined to make America a great world power while avoiding war.
The United States Army, with 39,000 men in 1890, was the smallest and least powerful army of any major power in the late 19th century. By contrast, France had 542,000.[33] The Spanish–American War of 1898 was fought mostly by temporary volunteers and state national guard units. It demonstrated that more effective control over the department and bureaus was necessary.[34]
Roosevelt gave strong support to the reforms proposed by his Secretary of War Elihu Root (1899–1904), who wanted a uniformed chief of staff as general manager and a European-type general staff for planning. Despite being stymied by General Nelson A. Miles, the Commanding General of the United States Army, the Secretary succeeded in enlarging West Point and establishing the U.S. Army War College as well as the General Staff. Root changed the procedures for promotions and organized schools for the special branches of the service. He also devised the principle of rotating officers from staff to line. Root was concerned about the new territories acquired after the Spanish–American War and worked out the procedures for turning Cuba over to the Cubans, wrote the charter of government for the Philippines, and eliminated tariffs on goods imported to the United States from Puerto Rico.
Roosevelt, a friend of Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan and an advocate of his doctrine of sea power, worked to build the Navy into a force befitting a major world power. He sent the Great White Fleet (named after its gleaming white paint) on an around-the-world cruise in 1908-09. By 1904, the United States had the fifth largest Navy in the world; by 1907, it had the third largest.[36] As a tribute to him, several Navy warships have been named after Roosevelt over the years, including a Nimitz class supercarrier.
In late 1904, following the Venezuela Crisis of 1902–03, Roosevelt announced his Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. It stated that the U.S. would intervene in the finances of unstable Caribbean and Central American countries if they defaulted on their debts to European creditors and, in effect, guarantee their debts, making it unnecessary for European powers to intervene to collect unpaid debts. In the case of Venezuela's default, Germany had threatened to seize the customs houses in her ports. Thus, Roosevelt's pronouncement was especially meant as a warning to Germany, and had the result of promoting peace in the region, as the Germans decided to not intervene directly in Venezuela and in other countries.
In the summer of 1905, Roosevelt persuaded the parties in the Russo-Japanese War to meet in a peace conference in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, starting on August 5. His persistent and effective mediation led to the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth on September 5, ending the war. For his efforts, Roosevelt was awarded the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize.
Roosevelt saw Japan as the rising power in Asia, in terms of military strength and economic modernization. He viewed Korea as a backward nation and did not object to Japanese moves to control the strategic Korean Peninsula. With the withdrawal of the American legation from Seoul and the refusal of the Secretary of State to receive a Korean protest mission, the Americans signaled they would not intervene militarily to stop Japan's planned takeover of Korea.[39] (There is a myth regarding a so-called Taft–Katsura Agreement of 1905; it was a conversation that did not produce an agreement).[40]
Vituperative anti-Japanese sentiment (especially on the West Coast) soured relations in the 1907-24 era.[41] Washington did not want to anger Japan by passing legislation to bar Japanese immigration to the U.S. as had been done for Chinese immigration. Instead there was an informal "Gentlemen's Agreement" (1907-8) between the U.S. and Japan whereby Japan made sure there was very little or no migration of unskilled Japanese workers to the U.S., and the public schools of San Francisco stopped the segregation of Japanese students. The agreements were made by Secretary of State Elihu Root and Japan's Foreign Minister Tadasu Hayashi. The Agreement banned emigration of Japanese laborers to the U.S. or Hawaii and ended the segregation order of the San Francisco School Board in California, which had humiliated and angered the Japanese. The agreements remained effect until 1924 when Congress forbade all immigration from Japan.
