L/Cpl Rippon served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, II Corps of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF.) Thrust into the left of the allied line at Mons, Belgium from early morning on 23rd August 1914 British Rifle Battalions repulsed waves of attacking enemy infantry. Mid afternoon marked the start of a famous retreat, and the beginning of over four years of horrific conflict.

Although Britain did not declare war until August 4, 1914 Germany declared war on France on 1 August 1914.
In this 100-year old #WW1 archive film footage, The German Emperor gives a speech on August 1, 1914, which his people are quite joyful about and are eager to volunteer. Germany mobilises almost 1 million troops and invades Belgium first before advancing towards France.
However they were always fearful of fighting a war on 2-fronts. In actual fact as well as Russia, Italy was also on the allies side and did not give an inch to the Austro-Hungarian troops (Germany's stalwart ally) in Trento-Trieste.

Betrachtet man nur die ersten Monate des Krieges so zeichnet sich dort bereits der Ausgang ab.
Dieser Film ist Teil meiner Facharbeit. Ich zeige dort die Fehler auf, die am Anfang des Krieges zum Stellungskrieg führten. Sowohl die Deutschen, als auch die Franzosen trugen ihren Teil dazu bei, dass dieser Krieg in den Gräben enden musste.
Teil 1 beschäftigt sich mit der Vorgeschichte des Kriegs und dem eigentlichen Verlauf.
Alle Karten und Animationen sind selbst erstellt, alle Bilder stammen von Wikipedia.

August 17, 1914 - Russia invades Germany, attacking into East Prussia, forcing the outnumbered Germans there to fall back. This marks the advent of the Eastern Front in Europe in which Russia will oppose Germany and Austria-Hungary. n August 19, Russian cavalry came into contact with a German infantry regiment outside Gumbinnen. Instead of withdrawing, the Russians dismounted and brought up their artillery to continue the fight, driving the Germans back. However, they suffered 400 casualties and after expending most of their ammunition were forced to retreat themselves. To the south, the German advance went well, but faltered once they came under Russian artillery fire, and the Russians were able to turn their flanks and force them to retreat in disorder to the Insterburg-Angerburg lines, leaving 6,000 prisoners in Russian hands."The uncharacteristic sight of defeated German soldiers streaming mob-like to the rear really unnerved Prittwitz", the commander of the German 8th Army,who feared that his army could be trapped Prittwitz panicked and, with a decision out of proportion to the severity of the situation, ordered a general retreat to the Vistula, leaving East Prussia to the Russians....
Within days the German Army (under new command) rallied
and destroyed the two invading Russian armies at the Battles of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes.

"I solemnly declare here that I shall not make a sign of peace until the last enemy soldier has left our soil…………….."
"……….The square in front of the Palace was black with the world. Flags, banners, standards all fluttered above the crowd. In the first row, people held portraits of Their Majesties. It was a sea of people. Silence was complete. The crowd seemed to be waiting for something else. And something else occurred.
On one of the balconies the Emperor appeared; behind him came the Empress in a white dress.
Heads immediately became uncovered, everyone knelt, the flags and standards lowered almost to the ground. The Tsar was greeted by hurrahs and by the hymn and the prayer "Spassi, Gospodi, ludi tvoya" (Lord, save your people)
The entire crowd sang.
…."Give to our pious Emperor, Nicholas Alexandrovitch, Victory over his enemies".
The prayer came to the balcony.
Their Majesties could not hold back their tears. They were crying on the square…they crossed themselves…The Tsar and the People were united in one sole desire, one sole goal, one sole prayer."………..

With reference to the dates, I use the Gegorian Calendar (New style). Before 1918, Russia still used the Julian Callender (old style) which in the 20th century was 13 days behind the more widely used Gregorian .

1914 (MCMXIV) was a common year starting on Thursday (dominical letter D) of the Gregorian calendar and a common year starting on Wednesday (dominical letter E) of the Julian calendar, the 1914th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 914th year of the 2nd millennium, the 14th year of the 20th century, and the 5th year of the 1910s decade. Note that the Julian day for 1914 is 13 calendar days difference, which continued to be used from 1582 until the complete conversion of the Gregorian calendar was entirely done in 1929. This year saw the beginning of what became known as World War I and also saw the first airline to provide scheduled regular commercial passenger services with heavier-than-air aircraft with the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line.

In this 100-year old #WW1 archive film footage, The German Emperor gives a speech on August 1, 1914, which his people are quite joyful about and are eager to volunteer. Germany mobilises almost 1 million troops and invades Belgium first before advancing towards France.
However they were always fearful of fighting a war on 2-fronts. In actual fact as well as Russia, Italy was also on the allies side and did not give an inch to the Austro-Hungarian troops (Germany's stalwart ally) in Trento-Trieste.

This marks the advent of the Eastern Front in Europe in which Russia will oppose Germany and Austria-Hungary. n August 19, Russian cavalry came into contact with a German infantry regiment outside Gumbinnen. Instead of withdrawing, the Russians dismounted and brought up their artillery to continue the fight, driving the Germans back. However, they suffered 400 casualties and after expending most of their ammunition were forced to retreat themselves. To the south, the German advance went well, but faltered once they came under Russian artillery fire, and the Russians were able to turn their flanks and force them to retreat in disorder to the Insterburg-Angerburg lines, leaving 6,000 prisoners in Russian hands."The uncharacteristic sight of defeated German soldiers streaming mob-like to the rear really unnerved Prittwitz", the commander of the German 8th Army,who feared that his army could be trapped Prittwitz panicked and, with a decision out of proportion to the severity of the situation, ordered a general retreat to the Vistula, leaving East Prussia to the Russians....
Within days the German Army (under new command) rallied
and destroyed the two invading Russian armies at the Battles of Tannenberg and the Masurian Lakes.

"I am persuaded that it is with the same feeling of calm that we shall conduct ourselves until the end of this war, which is what it is.
"I solemnly declare here that I shall not make a sign of peace until the last enemy soldier has left our soil…………….."
"……….The square in front of the Palace was black with the world. Flags, banners, standards all fluttered above the crowd. In the first row, people held portraits of Their Majesties. It was a sea of people. Silence was complete. The crowd seemed to be waiting for something else. And something else occurred.
On one of the balconies the Emperor appeared; behind him came the Empress in a white dress.
Heads immediately became uncovered, everyone knelt, the flags and standards lowered almost to the ground. The Tsar was greeted by hurrahs and by the hymn and the prayer "Spassi, Gospodi, ludi tvoya" (Lord, save your people)
The entire crowd sang.
…."Give to our pious Emperor, Nicholas Alexandrovitch, Victory over his enemies".
The prayer came to the balcony.
Their Majesties could not hold back their tears. They were crying on the square…they crossed themselves…The Tsar and the People were united in one sole desire, one sole goal, one sole prayer."………..
Music: Andante from the Piano Concerto No.2 in F, Op.102 by Shostakovich.
With reference to the dates, I use the Gegorian Calendar (New style). Before 1918, Russia still used the Julian Callender (old style) which in the 20th century was 13 days behind the more widely used Gregorian .
