Isaac Smith comes to terms with second missed chance to win game for Hawthorn v Geelong

Show comments

Hawthorn vice-captain Isaac Smith has told of "interesting" social media discourse after his second failed game-winning shot within a year against Geelong, but says he has accepted that "not one kick decides a game of footy".

Smith had a chance to win Saturday's clash at the MCG when he played on and took a shot from 45 metres out with five seconds remaining. But just as occurred when he had the chance to win last year's qualifying final against the Cats with a set shot after the siren, Smith sprayed his kick, resulting in a three-point win for Geelong.

Dangerfield down but not out

The whole of Geelong held their collective breaths when Patrick Dangerfield went down in the first quarter at the MCG.

While the stakes were lower this time around, the loss has put further pressure on the Hawks' already slim finals chances.

But despite his inability to secure victory in what was former Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge's 300th game, Smith hinted he was coming to terms with the miss. "Lightning strikes twice," Smith told Channel Nine's Future Stars TV on Sunday.

"You wouldn't think it'd happen twice against the same team in a bit under 12 months, but it has.

"It would have been great to win, but I think you're realistic enough to know that not one kick decides a game of footy.

"Social media's been pretty interesting the last 24 hours. I've had a few giggles and there's been some interesting comments. But it's also nice, there's a lot of messages of support.

"It'd be nice to kick one in the near future."

Smith also explained his decision to play on rather than take the set shot. "I wasn't quite sure if I marked it outside 50 or inside 50. I wasn't quite sure on the distance," he said.

"And also I saw I had time and space in front of me, and usually on the run I don't miss, and yesterday I did."
