Styx /ˈstɪks/ is an American rock band formed in 1970 from Chicago that became famous for its albums released in the mid-1970s and early 1980s. They are best known for melding the style of pop rock with the power of hard-rock guitar, strong ballads and elements of international musical theater.
Styx is best known for the hit songs "Lady" (#6, 1973), "Come Sail Away" (#8, 1977), "Babe" (#1, 1979), "The Best of Times" (#3, 1981), "Too Much Time on My Hands" (#9, 1981) and "Mr. Roboto" (#3, 1983). Other hits include "Show Me the Way" (#3, 1990), "Don't Let It End" (#6, 1983), "Renegade" (#16, 1979) and "Boat on the River", a big hit in much of Europe and Japan. The band has five consecutive albums certified multi-platinum by the RIAA as well as sixteen top 40 singles in the US.
Twin brothers Chuck (bass guitar) and John Panozzo (drums) first got together with their neighbor Dennis DeYoung (vocals and keyboards) while living on the East Side of Chicago, eventually taking the band name "The Tradewinds". Chuck Panozzo left to attend seminary school for a year but returned to the group by 1964. Tom Nardini had been brought in to replace Chuck on guitar and Chuck decided to play bass guitar when he returned to the band. John Panozzo was the drummer, while Dennis DeYoung had switched from accordion to organ and piano. In 1965, the name "Tradewinds" was changed to TW4 after another band called The Trade Winds broke through nationally. By 1966, the Panozzo brothers had joined DeYoung at Chicago State College and kept the group together doing gigs at high schools and frat parties while studying to be teachers. In 1969 they added a college friend, John Curulewski, on guitar after Tom Nardini departed. Guitarist James "J.Y." Young came aboard in 1970 making TW4 a quintet.

Renegade" is a 1978 hit song recorded by the American rock band Styx. It was on their album Pieces of Eight. It reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is a first-person narrative of an outlaw, captured for a bounty, who recognizes that he is about to be executed for his criminal activities. The execution will be by hanging, as the outlaw laments, "Hangman is coming down from the gallows and I don't have very long." Some pressings of the single were made with translucent, red vinyl. When performed live from 1978 to 1983, drummer John Panozzo increased the tempo of the drum pattern during the guitar solo sections. Also, the track would serve as the drum solo spot for Panozzo during that time frame save the Paradise Theater tour of 1981/82. Although songwriter Tommy Shaw and fellow St...
The Grand Illusion is the seventh studio album by Styx, released in 1977 (see 1977 in music). It became the band's first Triple Platinum album, and spawned the Top 10 hit "Come Sail Away" and the Top 30 hit "Fooling Yourself". The album was the subject of an episode of the US radio show In the Studio with Redbeard featuring interviews with several band members. According to lead singer Dennis DeYoung, the album's theme was the struggle to overcome self-deluding superficiality in order to affirm one's genuine value. This theme was reflected in the lyrics of the album's title track: so if you think your life is complete confusion 'cause your neighbor's got it made just remember that it's a grand illusion and deep inside we're all the same DeYoung also revealed that the title of The Grand Ill...

First of all let me start out by saying I was never a big Styx fan. Back when Styx, Supertramp, Kansas and those other big 80's bands were in their heyday, I was listening to Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. So when some friends came by to drag me along to see Dennis DeYoung (former vocalist and keyboard player for Styx), I had my doubts. But the price was right and I didn't have to drive so it sounded like it might be an entertaining way to spend an evening. Much to my suprise, Dennis DeYoung and his band put on a great show! He seems like a cool guy, had a bunch of witty banter between songs and the band was exceptionally tight. They pulled off an evening of Styx classics with a cool light show. The only thing missing from your classic 80's rock show was the drum solo, but that's OK, the r...

Glen Burtnik was the first person to ever attempt to teach me how to play the guitar -- the first of many to fail at that task, but the only one who went on to play Paul McCartney onstage in "Beatlemania." He also married Rosemary, a beautiful girl down the street from me, so I saw him in passing from time to time. The only time I believe we were in the same room together in the last 40 years was probably around 1984 when my wife and I went to The Stone Pony in Asbury Park on a Sunday night to wait with the faithful to see if Bruce Springsteen would show up and play a set with the club's house band, Cats on a Smooth Surface. Their guitarist? Glen Burtnik. Music has been very good to Glen over the years. During his "Beatlemania" run, he built a lasting friendship with the performer cast ...

(James Young/Dennis DeYoung)
Day into night she's with me
How sweet is her warm embrace
Safe in the scent of jasmine
So safe in her gold and lace
Mornings I find, she's left me
So cold so alone, but aware
I try to escape, she finds me
Oh run though I may, she's there, there, there, there, there...
Luck is a lady whose smile is as cold as a stone
She'll bring you things, many things you might never have known
But when your die is cast she'll have the final laugh at you
She'll lock you in a duel, where you come out the fool
CHORUS
Beware of the Queen of Spades
Her black widow's curse might find you yet
Beware of a love that you will regret
Her love means only your death
Day into night she's with me
Turn of a card, she's there
The first time is free, you know
But from now on, pay me, me, me, me, me...
CHORUS
