The Willis Tower, built and still commonly referred to as Sears Tower, is a 108-story, 1,451-foot (442 m) skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, United States. At completion in 1973, it surpassed the World Trade Center towers in New York to become the tallest building in the world, a title it held for nearly 25 years. The Willis Tower is the second-tallest building in the United States and the 14th-tallest in the world. More than one million people visit its observation deck each year, making it one of Chicago's most popular tourist destinations. The structure was renamed in 2009 by the Willis Group as part of its lease on a portion of the tower's space.
As of December 2013, the building's largest tenant is United Airlines, which moved its corporate headquarters from the United Building at 77 West Wacker Drive in 2012 and today occupies around 20 floors with its headquarters and operations center.
The building's official address is 233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60606.
A tower is a tall structure, taller than it is wide, often by a significant margin. Towers are distinguished from masts by their lack of guy-wires and are therefore, along with tall buildings, self-supporting structures.
Towers are specifically distinguished from "buildings" in that they are not built to be habitable but to serve other functions. The principal function is the use of their height to enable various functions to be achieved including: visibility of other features attached to the tower such clock towers; as part of a larger structure or device to increase the visibility of the surroundings as in a fortified building such as a castle; or as a structural feature as an integral part of a bridge.
Towers can be stand alone structures or be supported by adjacent buildings or can be a feature on top of a large structure or building.
Towers have been used by mankind since prehistoric times. The oldest known may be the circular stone tower in walls of Neolithic Jericho (8000 BC). Some of the earliest towers were ziggurats, which existed in Sumerian architecture since the 4th millennium BC. The most famous ziggurats include the Sumerian Ziggurat of Ur, built the 3rd millennium BC, and the Etemenanki, one of the most famous examples of Babylonian architecture. The latter was built in Babylon during the 2nd millennium BC and was considered the tallest tower of the ancient world.

Chicago has many truly great buildings. It sits firmly on the map of global architecture and is the birthplace of the skyscraper. On June 23rd, 2010 a line of nasty storms rolled through Chicago in the early evening hours. I stayed late at the office that night to work on some things and to avoid the rush hour chaos that was going on. Once I returned home I wasn't really paying attention to what was happening outside until someone asked me if I was watching the lightning. I took a quick look out my window and saw some quick hits of lightning and ran back to my room to grab my camera and tripod. I was standing out there randomly hitting the record button and hoping I would catch some of the strikes. About 15 minutes in nothing was happening during my current recording so I reached to stop it and start a new one. At the moment I touched the camera three of the tallest buildings in Chicago were struck by lightning at th...

The US city of Chicago has unveiled a new tourist attraction. Visitors can now view the city by leaning on tilting windows from a tall building. The windows give visitors a downward facing view of the city from the top of the John Hancock building. Eight people at a time can experience a steady descent that lasts just over a minute. It eventually leaves people aboard the tilt facing out of a window at a thirty degree angle and leaning three-hundred and four meters high. The glass and steel platform is part of a multi-million dollar renovation to the observation deck on the ninety-fourth floor of the building.

So when you are visiting Chicago for the first time, the must see attraction on your list should be Willis Tower, previously known as the Sears Tower, where you can explore the city from the 103rd floor on the sky deck. Another great way to explore the city is by taking a cruise on Lake Michigan or the Charles River and seeing the skyline of the city from a different angle. If you're in good shape, and weather permits it, then you might like to explore what is known as the Magnificent Mile, which is a section on Michigan Avenue, home to some of the tallest buildings in America, and some of the most notable and historical landmarks in Chicago.

This is how I built the Sears/Willis tower in Minecraft. It took a couple of hours. The texture pack is called Flowtex HD (I made it myself) and it is available here as well as the world download: http://sdrv.ms/17HQqSZ All of the music can be found on SimCity OST's channel. In order, these are the titles: - Building the Foundation - Clear Skyscrapers - Population = 1 - Clear Skyscrapers (again) Don't forget to comment, like, and subscribe and to check out my other videos!
This is the elevator tour of the Sears Tower, which is one of the three buildings displayed after Skyscraper Simulator loads. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EoLrjIFN78 for another Willis Tower 2011 video. You probably won't find this video very entertaining, but you will get a good feel for what the stairwells are like in North America's tallest building - Willis (Sears) Tower. 2,109 steps taken two at a time while towering up 103 floors at a very steady 11.5 seconds per floor pace for 19:49 total time to the observation deck. That is good for about a top 3 percentile finish - sounds better to me than 75th place out of 2,230! Enjoy! Shot by Cody Renshaw on a chest mounted GoPro HD Hero.
Hej ludziska! Witam was serdecznie i zapraszam do oglądania kolejnego jakże wyśmienitego ( i jakże długaśnego) odcinka z budowy miasta. Cóż, mógłbym posilić się na jakiś wykoncypowany opis ale powiem wam szczerzę. Dopiero wróciłem z roboty, jestem padnięty i cały dzień boli mnie głowa... :P Dlatego też napiszę prostackie "miłego oglądania". To wam musi wystarczyć. Ps. A będzie co oglądać bo faktycznie dzisiaj postawiłem w Pierdziszewie wiele ciekawych struktur :) A oto link do oficjalnego fanpage kanału: https://www.facebook.com/Grzechu40fanpage
