Mum awarded $1.63m after exploding whipped cream dispenser shatters her skull

A FRENCH court has awarded a payout of $1.6m to a woman whose face was “ripped off” by an exploding whipped cream dispenser.

The freak accident, which also cracked open 30-year-old Emilie Lada’s skull, comes after a fitness blogger and model died in a similar accident also in France.

Mrs Lada’s lawyer Emeline Petitgirard said the unusually large payout was to compensate for “a life snatched away”.

“There are serious consequences from the head trauma. She is a young woman who can no longer work, she suffers from memory loss, and has no sense of smell or taste,” she said.

The victim is also said to suffer other brain traumas and has organisational difficulties.

The lawyer said that her client had made an impressive recovery thanks to the “remarkable” word of the surgeons.

“Part of her face was torn off in the explosion, but the surgeons’ work was amazing and the visible damage is minimal now,” Petitgirard said.

“Thankfully the surgeons’ work was quite astonishing and the disfigurement is now barely visible.”

According to the judgement, the court in Montauban, southern France, found the canister’s importer F2J.com and its insurance provider AXA liable for the incident in 2013.

The damage award included $15,000 each to Lada’s husband and their two children, aged three and six, as they were also in the kitchen with her.

A similar incident occurred in June this year when Instagram star and blogger Rebecca Burger died in eastern France after a dispenser exploded, hitting her in the chest.

France’s National Consumer Institute had already issued a warning over the same type of canister, used by the Ard’Time brand, saying the plastic lid may not be able to withstand pressure from the carbon dioxide inside.
