Peking University (abbreviated PKU and colloquially known by the Chinese as Běidà 北大; Chinese: 北京大学, pinyin: Běijīng Dàxué), is a major Chinese research university located in Beijing and a member of the C9 League. It is the first modern national university established in China, founded as the "Imperial University of Peking" in 1898 as a replacement of the ancient Taixue or Guozijian, or Imperial Academy. It also served as the highest administration for education in China at the beginning of its founding. By 1920, it had become a center for progressive thought. Alongside Tsinghua University, Peking University is consistently ranked as the top higher learning institution in mainland China. In addition to academics, Peking University is especially renowned for its campus grounds, and the beauty of its traditional Chinese architecture.
Throughout its history, the university has educated and hosted many prominent modern Chinese thinkers, including figures such as: Lu Xun, Mao Zedong, Gu Hongming, Hu Shih, Li Dazhao, and Chen Duxiu. Peking University was influential in the birth of China's New Culture Movement, May Fourth Movement, the Tiananmen Square protest of 1989 and many other significant events.
Beijing is the capital of the People's Republic of China and one of the most populous cities in the world.
Its total population in 2013 was 21,150,000. The city proper is the 2nd most populous in the world. The metropolis, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts. Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighboring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast; together the three divisions form the Jingjinji metropolitan region and the national capital region of China.
Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai and is the nation's political, cultural and educational center. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport is the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic.
A university (Latin: universitas, "a whole") is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which grants academic degrees in various subjects and typically provides undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word "university" is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars."
The original Latin word "universitas" refers in general to "a number of persons associated into one body, a society, company, community, guild, corporation, etc." At the time of the emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, specialised "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located" came to be denominated by this general term. Like other guilds, they were self-regulating and determined the qualifications of their members.
In modern usage the word has come to mean "An institution of higher education offering tuition in mainly non-vocational subjects and typically having the power to confer degrees," with the earlier emphasis on its corporate organization considered as applying historically to Medieval universities.

In a talk at Peking University, Bill Gates encouraged the students there to seize the opportunity and accelerate efforts to improve lives around the world. My home base when I was in Beijing was "Zhongguanyuan," or the newly renovated "Western" dorms, in the Global Village located across the street from the North-Eastern Gate of Peking University. Akin to the freshman dorms at UC Berkeley, with a little more emphasis on simplicity and the color white, the dorms I lived in were equipped with showers built into the individual student units, a quaint sitting room, and then separate smaller rooms for the international students sharing two or three bedroom apartment units. (I'll show photos and video of my room later) I assumed that all the dorms on campus were the same as the one I was living in, but upon visiting another international student who had opted to live in the Chinese student dorms, I found out that this was definitely not the case. ...

This is the first part of my Beijing vlog series, where we arrive, have some classes, and go for our first sightseeing trip to Wangfujing. Enjoy!
In the early 1980's in the aftermath of the Democracy Wall movement, there was fledgling, limited 'democracy' on the campus of China's most prestigious University. Here are scenes from Beijing University in the autumn-winter of 1980-81. Jim Laurie and Janet Yang are seen interviewing students and talking to University officials who were not all that pleased to have us on campus.

Over nine million students take China's college entrance exam each year, but only a highly select number are admitted to the country's two more prestigious universities, Tsinghua University and Peking University. In this documentary, filmmaker and professor Paula Marantz Cohen is granted unprecedented access to the campuses of these universities, where she speaks with students about a range of subjects. They candidly discuss their academic and career goals, their feelings about American culture, and their attitude toward family and country. Their views provide an enlightening and often surprising picture of the upcoming generation of China's educated elite- and a window in the future of China.

Beijing, the capital of one of the fastest growing countries and economies in the world, is also home to interesting, and sometimes bizarre, street foods. From silk worm cocoons that are crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, to eating barbecued seahorse, which is believed to be good for your blood circulation, Beijing is well-known for its night and food markets that offer a variety food. The Chinese love their food, but dietary habits have changed rapidly in the past few decades. In a very short time, China has gone from "famine to feast". Today, the food in Beijing is as varied as it is plentiful: traditional or modern, Chinese or Western, China's capital caters to all tastes and needs. But while the narrow streets of Beijing used to be crowded with street vendors selling sn...
