Autism Speaks is an autism advocacy organization in the United States that sponsors autism research and conducts awareness and outreach activities aimed at families, governments, and the public. It was founded in February 2005 by Bob Wright, vice chairman of General Electric, and by his wife Suzanne, a year after their grandson Christian was diagnosed with autism.
In January 2008, child clinical psychologist Geraldine Dawson, Ph.D., became Autism Speaks's chief science officer. In April 2010, the organization named Yoko Ono its first "Global Autism Ambassador." Since its founding, Autism Speaks has merged with three existing autism organizations and raised millions of dollars for autism research.
Since February 2009, Autism Speaks has used the Wubbzy character from Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! as a mascot.
An Autism Rights advocate named Elizabeth Picciuto accused the organization of treating autism as a disease that needs to be cured rather than a difference that needs to be understood and accepted.

Autism Speaks joined the Ad Council and BBDO New York, the long-time volunteer agency for Autism Speaks, to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to help parents recognize the early signs of autism and take immediate action. For the first time in the campaign’s history, the new PSAs feature an imaginative world, created using 3D and stop-motion animation, inspired by stories of real children with autism and told from the perspective of a child with autism. The PSAs are an extension of the award-winning “Learn the Signs” campaign, created by BBDO, which has helped significantly increase the percentage of parents who recognize the early warning signs of autism. * * * UPDATE 2016: Do not engage the user known as "Seeing Clearly Media". I blocked them and tried to remove all their comments, but I still get notifications that people are arguing with them. "Seeing Clearly Media" does not want to listen, they want to argue and shove their cure agenda. Block and ignore them, they will not change their mind and I'm tired of the circular arguments showing up in my notifications. Thank you. ************** A copy of the speech I wrote and read is below. **All dislikes are from people who would rather be ignorant than search for the truth themselves. I feel sorry for you.** *** Autism Speaks is the most offensive organization out there to autistic people. If you participate in their "Light it up Blue" puzzle piece garbage, you are not supporting autistic ...
