While we can’t talk about the Middle East’s wealth without looking at their oil, it must be acknowledged that the Arabs are using their advantage to advance in almost every other market; construction, luxury hotels, retail and merchandising, real estate, banking, aviation, and telecommunications. The list of potential business opportunities seems endless. And with the wealth of entire nations soaring on the back of all this investment, we’ve selected the 10 wealthiest Arabs who are clearly benefiting from precious natural resources and wise investment decisions in the Middle East. 10. Abdullah bin Ahmad Al Ghurair & Family, UAE: $3.1 Billion 9. Taha Mikati, Lebanon: $3.5 Billion 8. Najib Mikati, Lebanon: $3.5 Billion 7. Majid Al Futtaim, UAE: $3.6 Billion 6. Sulaiman Al Rajhi & Family, Saudi Arabia: $6 Billion 5. Nassef Sawiris & Family, Egypt: $6.5 Billion USD 4. Mohamed Al Jaber, Saudi Arabia: $7 Billion 3. Mohammed Al Amoudi, Saudi Arabia: $13.5 Billion 2. Joseph Safra, Lebanon: $15.9 Billion The Safra bank has extended to Europe and the U.S. Joseph has invested in some coveted real-estate in America, too: He owns the 660 Madison Avenue building, which is home to Calvin Klein and other high-end stores. 1. Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, Saudi Arabia: $20 – $30 Billion His company, Kingdom Holding Company, has valuable stakes across several industries; recently, the company spent $300 million on a stake in Twitter and when the social media platform went public a few months back, his $300 million stake turned into $900 million. A tidy 200% increase, but a drop in the ocean for one of the richest men in the world. His self-reported net worth comes in at $30 billion, although Forbes recently valued him at closer to $20 billion. Either way, though, he’s firmly at the top spot. Video is from from 2014 which has been regular Falcon transportation for the Prince. Saudi Prince Bought Plane Tickets for His 80 Falcons. Saudi Prince buys airplane seats to transport his 80 falcon Birds. Flying on a plane is generally an awful experience, but next time you’re crammed in the middle seat counting down the hours, be thankful there aren’t 80 birds perched in coach with you. An image is going viral on Reddit of a Saudi prince who brought 80 hawks on a plane Monday morning: We’ve reached out to the author of the Reddit thread about the photo and will update the post if we learn anything else about which airline accommodated the birds, how long it took to situate them, and generally how well-behaved they were on the flight. While this may look strange, transporting falcons in the Middle East is actually a pretty common practice. Falconry (training birds to hunt) has been practiced in the Middle East for thousands of years and is still a popular past time in the United Arab of Emirates. A Reddit user pointed us in the direction of a very helpful Atlas Obscura article that says falcons can get their own forest green passports to fly in the United Arab Emirates. That passport allows the falcons to travel to Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Morocco, and Syria. The passport is valid for three years, according to the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. The falcon is the national bird of the UAE, so it makes sense airlines flying out of there would accommodate the birds’ transit needs. A spokesperson for the airline Flydubai told Frank Kane, a reporter for UAE news website The National, that falcons must have their own seat and are placed on a cloth to avoid accidents. Kane said the business class cabin was entirely reserved for falcons on his Flydubai flight, so this isn’t as rare of an occurrence as we may think. Etihad Airways also allows falcons on its planes. Falcon on Plane We all know the Saudi royal family have a lot of money. In 2015 Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the richest people in the world, announced he was giving away his $30 billion fortune. And now, another Saudi prince has taken excess to the next level by buying his raptors seats on an airplane. A Reddit user shared the photo, reportedly sent by his captain friend, that shows passengers surrounded by countless falcons.
