Electropop

Electropop is a musical genre which combines electronic music and pop music, with a primary usage of synthesizers and various electronic and pop musical instruments. The genre has seen a revival of popularity and influence since the 1980s, all the way to the 2010s.

The term was used during the 1980s to describe a form of synthpop characterized by an emphasized electronic sound, with a distinct pop sound.

Characteristics

Electropop songs are electronic and pop songs at heart, often with simple, catchy hooks and dance beats, but differing from those of electronic dance music genres in that songwriting is emphasized over simple danceability. Electropop is characterized by a distinctive low frequency synthesizers which might variously be described as crisp, crunchy, crackly, fuzzy, warm, distorted or dirty.

History

Electropop music began appearing in the late 1970s, with the "Robot Pop" of German band Kraftwerk, the "technopop" of Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra, and the electronic music of British artists who took inspiration from David Bowie's "Berlin period" albums Low, Heroes, and Lodger, as well as late 70s electronic-influenced disco, especially Germany's Munich Machine led by Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer. Some groups also took inspiration from the NYC electropunk group Suicide.

Jupiter Rising

Jupiter Rising was an American pop duo consisting of Jessie Payo and Spencer Nezey. The band was signed to Chime Entertainment and formed in 2005. They are best known for their songs "Go!", which was also featured on the soundtrack to Jump In!, and "Electropop", which topped the dance charts and achieved a million plays on Myspace.

Singles

Their song "Go!" hit #24 on Billboard magazine's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and received some airplay on radio stations across the United States. The song was used in commercials for Chevrolet, Fox Sports, and Major League Baseball. It was also used by at least four sporting teams at their arena/stadium. It was used in a commercial for Feel the Noise and some other Disney commercials. "Go!" was also featured in the DCOM Jump In!, as well as in Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, along with "Hero". It was also used in a commercial for Dance on Sunset.

Calvin Harris

Adam Richard Wiles (born 17 January 1984), better known by his stage name Calvin Harris, is a Scottish DJ, singer, songwriter, record producer, recording artist and remixer. His debut album, I Created Disco, was released in 2007 and was the precursor to his top-10 singles "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls". In 2009, Harris released his second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and earned a gold certification from the British Phonographic Industry within two months of release. Its lead single, "I'm Not Alone", became his first number one on the UK Singles Chart.

Harris rose to international prominence in 2012 with the release of his third studio album, 18 Months. Topping the UK charts, the album became his first to chart on the Billboard 200 in the US, reaching number 19. All eight of the album's singles; "Bounce", "Let's Go", "We'll Be Coming Back", "Sweet Nothing", "Drinking from the Bottle", "I Need Your Love", "Thinking About You" and "Feel So Close", along with "We Found Love" reached the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.

Shugo Chara!

Shugo Chara! (しゅごキャラ!, Shugo Kyara!), also known as My Guardian Characters, is a Japanese shōjo manga series created by the manga author duo, Peach-Pit. The story centers on elementary school girl Amu Hinamori, whose popular exterior, referred to as "cool and spicy" by her classmates, contrasts with her introverted personality. When Amu wishes for the courage to be reborn as her would-be self, she is surprised to find three colorful eggs the next morning, which hatch into three Guardian Characters: Ran, Miki, and Su.

Shugo Chara! is serialized in the magazine Nakayoshi and published by Kodansha in Japan. Del Rey has licensed the English language manga rights, releasing the first volume on March 27, 2007. It won the 2008 Kodansha Manga Award for best children's manga.

Shugo Chara! has also been adapted into a fifty-one episode anime television series of the same title produced by Satelight under the direction of Kenji Yasuda and debuted on October 6, 2007 on TV Tokyo. On July 20, 2008, Anime News Network reported that the Shugo Chara! anime would be continued for a second year under the title Shugo Chara!! Doki—, the first episode airing on October 10, 2008; the official anime website later announced an October 4, 2008 start date.
