Desierto

Desierto is a 2015 Mexican thriller film directed by Jonás Cuarón. It was shown in the Special Presentations section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for Special Presentations. The film is scheduled to be released on March 4, 2016, by STX Entertainment.

Plot

What begins as a hopeful journey by Mexican migrant workers looking to seek a better life by crossing the US border quickly becomes a fight for survival, when the unarmed men and women are chased across the desert terrain by a merciless rifle-toting vigilante.

Gael García Bernal (Spanish pronunciation: [ɡaˈel ɣarˈsi.a βerˈnal]; born November 30, 1978) is a Mexican film actor, director, and producer. He founded Canana Films in Mexico City.

Early life

Gael García Bernal was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, the son of Patricia Bernal, an actress and former model, and José Ángel García, an actor and director. His stepfather is Sergio Yazbek, whom his mother married when García Bernal was young. He started acting at just a year old and spent most of his teen years starring in telenovelas. Garcia studied the International Baccalaureate, with chemistry being his favorite subject. When he was fourteen, he taught indigenous peoples in Mexico to read, often working with the Huichol people. In his later teens, he took part in peaceful demonstrations during the Chiapas uprising of 1994.

Career

García Bernal was becoming a soap opera heartthrob. At age 19, he left Mexico's television world to study acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, the first person from Mexico to be accepted into the program. Briefly before this, he had begun to study philosophy at UNAM, Mexico's national university, before a strike closed the college and he left for London. Describing his time in London as 'life forming', he considered acting simply an 'odd job profession' until the Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu offered him a part in Amores Perros. His debut as a working-class dreamer in the Oscar-nominated Amores Perros was what first grabbed Hollywood's attention.

STX Entertainment is an American film and television studio launched in 2014 by Robert Simonds.

History

In 2012, Simonds and Bill McGlashan, the head of TPG Growth, were discussing the profitability of producing films with a star attached and a medium budget (in the $20–60 million range), a method that had gone out of style with Hollywood studios. The conversation led to the launch of STX Entertainment in 2014, with a mission to finance, produce, market and self-distribute 8 to 10 medium budget star-driven films per year. In March 2015, STX announced a deal with Chinese film production company Huayi Bros. to co-finance at least 18 films to be produced over a three-year period beginning in 2016, which would increase STX's slate to 12 to 15 films annually through 2018.

Rather than pursuing the traditional distribution process, STX has direct distribution agreements with North American theater chains AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Carmike. In January 2015, STX signed a multiyear television output agreement to release its films exclusively to Showtime Networks during the premium television window, beginning in 2015 and covering the studio’s theatrical releases through 2019. In April 2015, STX entered into a multiyear partnership with Universal Studios Home Entertainment, with Universal handling marketing, sales and distribution services for Blu-ray, DVD and VOD platforms of STX’s theatrical titles in North America.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (born April 22, 1966) is an American actor. He is best known for portraying Denny Duquette in the medical drama Grey's Anatomy for parts of three seasons (2006-2009), John Winchester on Supernatural, The Comedian in the 2009 superhero film Watchmen, and Ike Evans in Magic City. He is currently playing the role of Jason Crouse on the TV series The Good Wife. He will portray Negan in AMC's The Walking Dead.

Early life

Morgan was born in Seattle, Washington, the son of Sandy Thomas and Richard Dean Morgan. He attended Ben Franklin Elementary School, Rose Hill Junior High, and Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, Washington. He was a basketball player in high school and college.

Career

Starting with the 1991 film Uncaged, Morgan has appeared in over 25 feature films. However, the bulk of his work has been in television. He was the star of the 1996–1997 television series The Burning Zone; his character, Dr. Edward Marcase, appeared in 10 out of 19 episodes that season. In 2005 and 2006, Morgan simultaneously appeared in three separate television series: on the CW series Supernatural as John Winchester, in a recurring role on ABC's Grey's Anatomy as heart transplant patient Denny Duquette, and as Judah Botwin in two episodes of the Showtime series Weeds. He has also guest-starred in a number of television series, including ER, JAG, Walker, Texas Ranger, Angel, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Sliders, The O.C., and Monk.

Jeff Dean (computer scientist)

Jeffrey Adgate "Jeff" Dean (born 1968) is an American computer scientist and software engineer. He is currently a Google Senior Fellow in the Systems and Infrastructure Group.

Personal life and education

Dean received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Washington, working with Craig Chambers on whole-program optimization techniques for object-oriented languages. He received a B.S., summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota in Computer Science & Economics in 1990. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2009, which recognized his work on "the science and engineering of large-scale distributed computer systems."

Career in computer science

Prior to joining Google, he was at DEC/Compaq's Western Research Laboratory, where he worked on profiling tools, microprocessor architecture, and information retrieval.

Prior to graduate school, he worked at the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS, developing software for statistical modeling and forecasting of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
