Doctorate of Philosophy briefly abbreviated as PhD or D.Phil, is the highest attainable degree in any field as such. It does not have to be particularly in the field of medical. It is basically a post grad degree awarded by many universities or institutions to the students interested in learning more about their concerned subject.
Ever wondered what counts to as a getting a doctorate degree? PhD is a degree a candidate earns by bagging a bachelors degree of three to four years in any college. Doctorate of Philosophy can be counted in any of the subjects ranging from Physics to English. Then the candidate has to look upon his area of interest in which he can master the subject which takes an estimate of two years.
Then comes over the task of working as a professor or lecturer to a group of students to whom you have to teach the subject which has been mastered upon by you. This phase includes research analysis in the subject you have mastered which has to be written, analyzed, and discovered and interpret the subject in a totally different way. Also, there is an oral examination, commonly known as viva, is being conducted wherein you are being presented in front of the external faculty which decides whether you are capable enough to get the doctoral degree. Also, a candidate who attains this degree is highly surmised as a doctor.

A PhD degree could be attained only after acquiring a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in the same subject as such.
However, there are many career options after attaining the highest degree of PhD. One can try their hands in Consulting wherein MBA graduates are preferred mostly. Similarly, entrepreneurship is the best career for business post grads. Government, law, finance are amongst the various career options which a student can opt for after completing their tenure of PhD.

Bachelors of Arts in English is a much sought after field among students in the recent years. There are some really good career opportunities too for this field of work. Let us first discuss the opportunities available to you in an academic point of view. You can further your education in English by choosing a wide range of master’s degrees available to you. You can choose to get a master’s degree in English literature, and you need to understand that many universities demand at least a master’s degree to gain entry to any department as a full time faculty member. You can also choose careers in mass communications. Owing to your proficiency in the language, you can be a suitable candidate for many mass communications programs. You can choose to study mass communications in journalism too. If you are interested in a corporate job, then a degree in MBA is the best option for you to move forward.
You can find decent jobs if you are willing to dive into the job market directly too. There are some good private sector and public sector jobs too. The trick is finding your own demands for the job. If you are looking for a job with a good scope for growth, then it is a better choice to look for a job in the public sector. Your BA degree in English qualifies you to many UPSC jobs, and BA in English makes you eligible to take the IAS examinations too. But, we all know that IAS is not every ones cup of tea. You can find a government job as a full time translator too.
There are other interesting streams you can explore. The most obvious of them is a career in journalism. If you have a flair for writing, then even a career as an author can be taken into consideration. There are many other jobs which require a strong grasp of English which are available in the job market right now. You can find work as a librarian too.
In the corporate market, you can find jobs such as public relations manager which requires a strong base in English. You can also find jobs as public relations manager in a few government sector jobs too. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from discovering any further career opportunities in this field. You can start your own institution to teach English, or you can start an NGO to teach under privileged kids English too.
You can also find lucrative jobs in the teaching field too. But, as I have mentioned before, you need at least a Masters degree to gain into a department at university level. But, there are quite a few career opportunities available to you at the school level. You can decide what the next option is, in your career while you work for a year or two as a teacher.

Doctor of Philosophy
A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD or Ph.D. or DPhil) or a Doctorate of Philosophy, from the Latin Doctor Philosophiae (for DPhil) or Philosophiae Doctor (for PhD or Ph.D.), is a type of doctorate awarded by universities in many countries.
The degree varies considerably according to the country, institution, and time period, from entry-level research degrees to higher doctorates. A person who attains a doctorate of philosophy is automatically awarded the academic title of doctor. During the studies that lead to the degree, the student is called doctoral student or PhD student, but also "doctoral candidate" at the appropriate stage.
In the context of academic degrees, the term philosophy does not refer solely to the field of philosophy, but is used in a broader sense in accordance with its original Greek meaning, which is "love of wisdom". In most of Europe, all fields (history, philosophy, social sciences, mathematics and natural philosophy/natural sciences) other than theology, law, and medicine (the so-called professional, vocational, or technical curriculum) were traditionally known as philosophy, and in Germany and elsewhere in Europe the basic faculty of liberal arts was known as the faculty of philosophy.

Indian Institutes of Technology
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance, and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance etc. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists sixteen institutes located at Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, Ropar and Varanasi. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration. The Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council.
The IITs have a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, called IIT-JEE, which was replaced by Joint Entrance Examination Advanced in 2013. The post-graduate level program that awards M.Tech, MS degrees in engineering is administered by the older IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Varanasi, Guwahati). M.Tech and MS admissions are done on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). In addition to B.Tech, M.Tech and MS programs, IITs also award other graduate degrees such as M.Sc in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, MBA, PhD etc. Admission to these programs of IITs is done through Common Admission Test(CAT), Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). IIT Guwahati and IIT Bombay offer undergraduate design programmes as well. Joint Seat Allocation Authority 2015 (JoSAA 2015) conducted the joint admission process for a total of 18 IITs, ISM Dhanbad.

The New School
The New School is a university in New York City, United States, located mostly in Greenwich Village. From its founding in 1919 by progressive New York educators, and for most of its history, the university was known as The New School for Social Research. Between 1997 and 2005 it was known as New School University. The university and each of its colleges were renamed in 2005.
The university became renowned for its teaching and its open intellectual environment, especially after it set up the University in Exile in 1933 as a graduate division to serve as an academic haven for scholars escaping from Nazi Germany and other anti-intellectual regimes in Europe. It has launched or housed a range of institutions such as the international think tank World Policy Institute, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, the India China Institute, the Observatory on Latin America, and the Center for New York City Affairs. Bachelors of Arts in English is a much sought after field among students in the recent years. There are some really good career opportunities too for this field of work. Let us first discuss the opportunities available to you in an academic point of view. You can further your education in English by choosing a wide range of master’s degrees available to you. You can choose to get a master’s degree in English literature, and you need to understand that many universities demand at least a master’s degree to gain entry to any department as a full time faculty member. You can also choose careers in mass communications. Owing to your proficiency in the language, you can be a suitable candidate for many mass communications programs. You can choose to study mass communications in journalism too. If you are interested in a corporate job, then a degree in MBA is the best option for you to move forward. You can find decent jobs if you are willing to dive into the job market directly too. There are some good private sector and public sector jobs too. The trick is finding your own demands for the job. If you are looking for a job with a good scope for growth, then it is a better choice to look for a job in the public sector. You can find a government job as a full time translator too. There are other interesting streams you can explore. The most obvious of them is a career in journalism. If you have a flair for writing, then even a career as an author can be taken into consideration. There are many other jobs which require a strong grasp of English which are available in the job market right now. You can find work as a librarian too. In the corporate market, you can find jobs such as public relations manager which requires a strong base in English. You can also find jobs as public relations manager in a few government sector jobs too. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from discovering any further career opportunities in this field. You can start your own institution to teach English, or you can start an NGO to teach under privileged kids English too. You can also find lucrative jobs in the teaching field too. But, as I have mentioned before, you need at least a Masters degree to gain into a department at university level. But, there are quite a few career opportunities available to you at the school level. You can decide what the next option is, in your career while you work for a year or two as a teacher. Then the candidate has to look upon his area of interest in which he can master the subject which takes an estimate of two years.
Then comes over the task of working as a professor or lecturer to a group of students to whom you have to teach the subject which has been mastered upon by you. This phase includes research analysis in the subject you have mastered which has to be written, analyzed, and discovered and interpret the subject in a totally different way. Also, there is an oral examination, commonly known as viva, is being conducted wherein you are being presented in front of the external faculty which decides whether you are capable enough to get the doctoral degree. Also, a candidate who attains this degree is highly surmised as a doctor.

• PhD in arts and humanities

Bachelors of Arts in English is a much sought after field among students in the recent years. There are some really good career opportunities too for this field of work. Let us first discuss the opportunities available to you in an academic point of view. You can further your education in English by choosing a wide range of master’s degrees available to you. You can choose to get a master’s degree in English literature, and you need to understand that many universities demand at least a master’s degree to gain entry to any department as a full time faculty member. You can also choose careers in mass communications. Owing to your proficiency in the language, you can be a suitable candidate for many mass communications programs. You can choose to study mass communications in journalism too. If you are interested in a corporate job, then a degree in MBA is the best option for you to move forward.
You can find decent jobs if you are willing to dive into the job market directly too. There are some good private sector and public sector jobs too. The trick is finding your own demands for the job. If you are looking for a job with a good scope for growth, then it is a better choice to look for a job in the public sector. Your BA degree in English qualifies you to many UPSC jobs, and BA in English makes you eligible to take the IAS examinations too. But, we all know that IAS is not every ones cup of tea. You can find a government job as a full time translator too.
There are other interesting streams you can explore. The most obvious of them is a career in journalism. If you have a flair for writing, then even a career as an author can be taken into consideration. There are many other jobs which require a strong grasp of English which are available in the job market right now. You can find work as a librarian too.
In the corporate market, you can find jobs such as public relations manager which requires a strong base in English. You can also find jobs as public relations manager in a few government sector jobs too. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from discovering any further career opportunities in this field. You can start your own institution to teach English, or you can start an NGO to teach under privileged kids English too.
You can also find lucrative jobs in the teaching field too. But, as I have mentioned before, you need at least a Masters degree to gain into a department at university level. But, there are quite a few career opportunities available to you at the school level. You can decide what the next option is, in your career while you work for a year or two as a teacher.

But now people are asking questions about the use of having so many PhD graduates. Is the point of having a PhD to get a better job? If so, are there enough high-level jobs to go round? In this report we see how one university is tackling the issue.

In this report we look at what the experience means for one Malaysian student doing a PhD at a prestigious institution in Italy.

Choosing the right course at the right university for you is obviously important. But what about the stress of presenting your thesis? What's the best way to translate years of hard work, research and studying into a positive result over one hour in front of some total strangers? For some students, defending their thesis and dealing with criticism is the hardest lesson of all. We meet one student on their big day.

Doctorate of Philosophy briefly abbreviated as PhD or D.Phil, is the highest attainable degree in any field as such. It does not have to be particularly in the field of medical. It is basically a post grad degree awarded by many universities or institutions to the students interested in learning more about their concerned subject.
Ever wondered what counts to as a getting a doctorate degree? PhD is a degree a candidate earns by bagging a bachelors degree of three to four years in any college. Doctorate of Philosophy can be counted in any of the subjects ranging from Physics to English. Then the candidate has to look upon his area of interest in which he can master the subject which takes an estimate of two years.
Then comes over the task of working as a professor or lecturer to a group of students to whom you have to teach the subject which has been mastered upon by you. This phase includes research analysis in the subject you have mastered which has to be written, analyzed, and discovered and interpret the subject in a totally different way. Also, there is an oral examination, commonly known as viva, is being conducted wherein you are being presented in front of the external faculty which decides whether you are capable enough to get the doctoral degree. Also, a candidate who attains this degree is highly surmised as a doctor.
Here are the following subjects in which you can attain a master degree:
• PhD in Biology
• PhD in French Literature
• PhD in arts and humanities
• PhD in social sciences
• PhD in natural sciences
• PhD in business
• PhD in health and education

Bachelors of Arts in English is a much sought after field among students in the recent years. There are some really good career opportunities too for this field of work. Let us first discuss the opportunities available to you in an academic point of view. You can further your education in English by choosing a wide range of master’s degrees available to you. You can choose to get a master’s degree in English literature, and you need to understand that many universities demand at least a master’s degree to gain entry to any department as a full time faculty member. You can also choose careers in mass communications. Owing to your proficiency in the language, you can be a suitable candidate for many mass communications programs. You can choose to study mass communications in journalism too. If you are interested in a corporate job, then a degree in MBA is the best option for you to move forward.
You can find decent jobs if you are willing to dive into the job market directly too. There are some good private sector and public sector jobs too. The trick is finding your own demands for the job. If you are looking for a job with a good scope for growth, then it is a better choice to look for a job in the public sector. Your BA degree in English qualifies you to many UPSC jobs, and BA in English makes you eligible to take the IAS examinations too. But, we all know that IAS is not every ones cup of tea. You can find a government job as a full time translator too.
There are other interesting streams you can explore. The most obvious of them is a career in journalism. If you have a flair for writing, then even a career as an author can be taken into consideration. There are many other jobs which require a strong grasp of English which are available in the job market right now. You can find work as a librarian too.
In the corporate market, you can find jobs such as public relations manager which requires a strong base in English. You can also find jobs as public relations manager in a few government sector jobs too. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from discovering any further career opportunities in this field. You can start your own institution to teach English, or you can start an NGO to teach under privileged kids English too.
You can also find lucrative jobs in the teaching field too. But, as I have mentioned before, you need at least a Masters degree to gain into a department at university level. But, there are quite a few career opportunities available to you at the school level. You can decide what the next option is, in your career while you work for a year or two as a teacher.

The Lecture
What are the health effects of mobile phones and wireless radiation? While Australia has led the world in safety standards, including compulsory seat-belt legislation, plain packaging on cigarettes, and product and food disclosure legislation, it falls behind in addressing the significant issues associated with mobile phone use. In this Dean’s Lecture, epidemiologist and electromagnetic radiation expert, Dr Devra Davis, will outline the evolution of the mobile phone and smartphone, and provide a background to the current 19 year old radiation safety standards (SAR), policy developments and international legislation. New global studies on the health consequences of mobile/wireless radiation will be presented, including children’s exposure and risks.
The Speaker
Dr Devra Davis is an internationally recognised expert on electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones and other wireless transmitting devices. She is currently the Visiting Professor of Medicine at the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School, and Visiting Professor of Medicine at Ondokuz Mayis University, Turkey. Dr Davis was Founding Director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute — the first institute of its kind in the world, to examine the environmental factors that contribute to the majority of cases of cancer.
In 2007, Dr Devra Davis founded nonprofit Environmental Health Trust to provide basic research and education about environmental health hazards. Dr Davis served as the President Clinton appointee to the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board in the U.S.A. from 1994–1999, an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents and mitigates chemical accidents.
As the former Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled leading officials in the United States, United Nations, European Environment Agency, Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization, and World Bank.
Dr Davis holds a B.S. in physiological psychology and an M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh, 1967. She completed a PhD in science studies at the University of Chicago as a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellow, 1972 and a M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow, 1982. She has authored more than 200 publications and has been published in Lancet and Journal of the American Medical Association as well as the Scientific American and the New York Times.

Agamben discusses potentiality, impotentiality and actuality which is a philosophical problem dating back to Aristotle. The potential in the act of creation not only resists an external force, but also the impotentiality itself which is internal. This relation is unique to humans and allows for the act of creation such that it exists in no other species. This resistance acts as a critical power which restrains the blind drive of potentiality, leading to the retention of some imperfection and therefore the simultaneous exertion of potentiality and impotentiality. This, Agamben will call, Poetics of Inoperativity. Further, he will claim that true human praxis, by making inoperative works and functions of humans, will open the possibility for new works and usage. Open lecture delivered to the students and faculty of the European Graduate School, August 2014.
Giorgio Agamben, Phd., Baruch Spinoza Chair at European Graduate School EGS, is a professor of aesthetics at the University of Verona, Italy and teaches philosophy at the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris and at the University of Macerata in Italy. As a post graduate he participated in seminars with Martin Heidegger in Freiburg and directed the Italian Walter Benjamin Edition. Agamben's unique blending of literary theory, continental philosophy, political thought, religious studies, literature and art makes him one of the most challenging thinkers of our time. He was a visiting professor in Paris and has taught at American universities such as UC Berkeley, Los Angeles, Irvine, Santa Cruz, and Northwestern.
With over sixteen titles translated into English so far, Agamben's work covers fields as diverse as Biblical studies, cinema, classical and medieval literature, linguistics, juridic philosophy, as well as commentary on world politics, theories of language, friendship, art, aesthetics, poetics and more. Agamben, continuing the work of both Foucault and Derrida through incisive studies of history and philosophy, as well as philology, seeks to confront and unwind the aporias and gaps which bind us in our mundane existence. His best known work includes his investigations of the concepts of state of exception and homo sacer.

What is it?
An opportunity to discuss PhD research with colleagues, with expert input from senior academics experienced in PhD research. The discussion is informal and round-table. Topics may be suggested in advance via the Convenor. Although colleagues may not be able to give expert advice on the specific subject matter of your PhD, they may be able to give advice on research generally.
Why have it?
PhD Research can sometimes feel isolating, both physically and intellectually. We are focused on one relatively narrow legal question, a subject that perhaps most others will have little interest in. We have to motivate ourselves and direct the course of our own study. A Masterclass can hopefully ameliorate the sense of isolation and make us feel more part of an academic community, Even hearing that other people are having the same problems as us can diminish those problems in our own heads. We can also hear useful tops from others on how they have solved problems that may be devilling us.
When and where?
Masterclasses are held approximately once every month in IALS. An email will be sent to all IALS PhD students in advance informing them of the date and time. They are generally held during the day.
Who is eligible to attend?
At present, the focus is on IALS PhD students. however, if you are studying for a PhD in law at another institution and would like to attend, please contact the Convenor. Provided that the numbers are sufficiently small, there will be no difficulty with having students from outside IALS present.

- What happens in a Viva?
- How should I select my external examiners?
- Should I use Endnote, Zotero or neither?
- At what point should I stop reading and start writing?
- How much of my own personal experience and opinion should I include?

Each unresolved hurtful experience is etched deep into the psyche and stored in the body.
