Engagement

An engagement, betrothal, or fiancer is a promise to wed, and also the period of time between a marriage proposal and a marriage. During this period, a couple is said to be betrothed, "intended", affianced, engaged to be married, or simply engaged. Future brides and grooms may be called the betrothed, a wife-to-be or husband-to-be, fiancée or fiancé, respectively (from the French word fiancer). The duration of the courtship varies vastly, and is largely dependent on cultural norms or upon the agreement of the parties involved.

Long engagements were once common in formal arranged marriages, and it was not uncommon for parents betrothing children to arrange marriages many years before the engaged couple were old enough.

Origin

The origins of European engagement in marriage practice is found in the Jewish law (Torah), first exemplified by Abraham, and outlined in the last Talmudic tractate of the Nashim (Women) order, where marriage consists of two separate acts, called erusin (or kiddushin, meaning sanctification), which is the betrothal ceremony, and nissu'in or chupah, the actual ceremony for the marriage. Erusin changes the couple's interpersonal status, while nissu'in brings about the legal consequences of the change of status. (However, in the Talmud and other sources of Jewish law there is also a process, called kiddushin, corresponding to what today is called engagement. Marrying without such an agreement is considered immoral. To complicate matters, erusin in modern Hebrew means engagement, not betrothal.)

Pawan Kalyan

Pawan Kalyan is an Indian film actor, director, screenwriter, stunt coordinator, writer, and politician. His film works are predominantly in Telugu cinema. He is the younger brother of actor turned politician Chiranjeevi. Kalyan made his acting debut in 1996 Telugu film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. In 1998, he starred in Tholi Prema which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for that year. In 2015, he enacted Lord Krishna in the sleeper hit Gopala Gopala.

He is known for his works in films Gokulamlo Seetha, Suswagatham, Thammudu, Badri, Kushi, Jalsa, Gabbar Singh for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu, and Attarintiki Daredi which became the highest grossing Telugu film of all time. He was listed 26th in the Forbes India list of top 100 Celebrities of 2013. As of 2014, he holds a net worth of ₹185 million (US$2.7 million).

In March 2014, he ventured into politics, founding the Jana Sena Party. During that period, Pawan Kalyan was listed by google as the most searched Indian celebrity politician on Google search.

N. Chandrababu Naidu

Nara Chandrababu Naidu (born 20 April 1950) is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He is also the President of the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Naidu became the state's youngest assembly member and youngest minister at 28, and served the longest term as Chief Minister of the state from 1995 to 2004. He unleashed a series of reforms after taking over the reins of state. Naidu emphasised the use of information technology (IT) and was instrumental in making Hyderabad one of the IT hubs in India which earned praise from global leaders and media for his public policies and approach to governance.

The 2004 election defeat for Naidu was primarily attributed to not enough focus on agriculture by his administration. The severe drought and increasing debt had driven hundreds of farmers in the state to commit suicide. Naidu was perceived to ignore the large rural population with his policies, which created a negative image for him. He subsequently lost 2009 Assembly elections and became the longest serving Leader of opposition since 2004. Naidu has also been criticized for his frequent change of mind in regards to the support of the Andhra Pradesh Bifurcation. After the 2014 local assembly elections, Naidu was re-elected as Chief Minister.

Sarah Lahbati

Sarah Alzol Lahbati (born October 9, 1993 in Geneva, Switzerland) is a Swiss-Filipino actress and reality show contestant who gained media attention as a finalist on the 5th season of StarStruck, a Philippine overall talent show broadcast on GMA Network. Lahbati declared StarStruck V's Ultimate Female Survivors after nine weeks of the competition.
