The European Commission (EC) is the executive body of the European Union responsible for proposing legislation, implementing decisions, upholding the EU treaties and managing the day-to-day business of the EU. Commissioners swear an oath at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, pledging to respect the treaties and to be completely independent in carrying out their duties during their mandate.
The Commission operates as a cabinet government, with 28 members of the Commission (informally known as "commissioners"). There is one member per member state, though members are bound to represent the interests of the EU as a whole rather than their home state. One of the 28 is the Commission President (currently Jean-Claude Juncker) proposed by the European Council and elected by the European Parliament. The Council then appoints the other 27 members of the Commission in agreement with the nominated President, and the 28 members as a single body are then subject to a vote of approval by the European Parliament. The current Commission is the Juncker Commission, which took office in late 2014.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has launched a bitter attack on members of the European Parliament for failing to show up. Standing up in Strasbourg, he denounced the body as "ridiculous, totally ridiculous". Estimating the number of MEPs at around 30, he said it proved that the parliament was "not serious". Parliament President Antonio Tajani reacted furiously, accusing him of a lack of respect. "You can criticise the parliament, but it's not the commission's job to control the parliament, it's the parliament that has to control the commission," he said. "I will never again attend a meeting of this kind" EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said. But the clash continued. Mr Juncker, who is in charge of the EU's executive body, angrily rebuked MEPs for failing t...

(29 Mar 2017) The president of the European Commission on Wednesday said awarding UK citizens "associate citizenship" of the European Union would depend on Brexit negotiations between the UK and the bloc. Jean-Claude Juncker was speaking in Valetta, the Maltese capital, during at an event called 'Public Dialogue on the future of Europe'. Britain officially filed for its exit from the European Union earlier on Wednesday, after Prime Minister Theresa May formally sent a six-page letter to EU Council President Donald Tusk, invoking Article 50 of the EU's key treaty. It sets the clock ticking on two years of negotiations until Britain becomes the first major nation to leave the union. The budget for this film was awarded to Benoit Detalle and me by the European Travel Commission after our pitch won the Euroshorts competition. The task was to travel around Europe and find a way to present its differences in a short and simple way. The film combines stop motion and time-lapse techniques, both done in studio and on real locations (in 10 european countries). The key idea is to propose an alternative way of travelling by playing a dice game. The rules of the game are simple and can be easily applied to big or small scale travels, and we hope people will be inspired by this film to travel and use the game to explore different cities, countries and continents. The European Code Against Cancer is an initiative of the European Commission to inform people about actions they can take for themselves or their families to reduce their risk of cancer. Coordinated by the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer, the current edition consists of twelve recommendations that most people can follow without any special skills or advice. The more recommendations people follow, the lower their risk of cancer will be. It has been estimated that almost half of all deaths due to cancer in Europe could be avoided if everyone followed the recommendations.

The European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved a non-binding resolution that lays out its views on the Brexit negotiations. The parliament will have no formal role in shaping the Brexit talks. The negotiations will be led by the European Commission on behalf of the EU's remaining 27 member states. Their draft negotiating guidelines were issued last week. But the parliament's views still matter because under the Article 50 rules it will get a vote on the final EU-UK "divorce" deal and if it does not like what has been agreed it could demand changes and delay the process. BBC Reality Check correspondent Chris Morris teases out some of the key sentences from the resolution and explains their significance.
