Park Place Energy is a U.S. public company engaged in exploration for oil and natural gas. Our management team has extensive international oil and gas experience.Our goal is to produce natural gas from coal seams in the Dobrich region of northeast Bulgaria.
Between 1965 and 1990 drilling was conducted in and around the area covered by the Block 1-11 Vranino license, and over 220 wells were safely drilled through the aquifers to the coal formations. From these activities, we know the location of the coal formations.
Although the license covers about 400 square kilometers, only about 700 square meters (being an area of about 100 meters by 70 meters) will be used for drilling operations. After the well is placed into production, the drilling area may be reduced. No activities will be conducted on or near environmental areas.
Our project in Bulgaria involves the exploration for gas from subsurface coal formations, or coal seams. Coal seam gas, also called coalbed methane (CBM), is a naturally occurring gas mixture that’s mostly methane.
Coal seam gas generally has more pure concentrations of methane (95%) than other natural gases found in sandstones or carbonate formations. Coal seam gas is formed by the same natural processes that create the coal seams that hold it.
By using the information from the wells previously drilled in the area, we can identify the depths of the local water aquifers to ensure that these aquifers are not damaged during drilling or production operations.
In the coal seams, the gas adheres to the surface of the coal (known as the matrix) and is also found in the system of naturally occurring fractures (known as cleats). The gas is trapped in the coal matrix and the cleats by water and ground pressure. Extracting the gas involves drilling into the coal seam and reducing the formation pressure primarily by pumping off the water in the formation. As a consequence of the lower pressure, the gas is released from the coal matrix and flows through the cleats to the well bore and then onward to the surface.
All of the casings will be cemented back to the surface, providing multiple mechanical barriers to protect the local water aquifers.
Coal seams are generally found at depths between 1500 and 2000 meters. The pressure integrity of the casing and cement is tested at every one of the casing before the final wellbore section is drilled through the coal seams. During the drilling of the final section, core samples will be obtained. Analysis of these core samples will allow us to determine if the coal seams produce coal bed methane. After testing is completed, we will install and cement the production casing. This ensures that the well is completely cased and cemented with no possibility of gas escaping in an uncontrolled manner.
Once the drilling procedure ends, the drilling rig is removed and a temporary wellhead is installed. A perforation gun is lowered to the coal seams. A high- pressure gas jet is released, piercing the casing and cement barrier to penetrate the coal seam. This process does not involve the injection of fluids, chemicals or sand which would occur with fracking.
Water and gas will then flow from the coal seams into the wellbore. The water will be piped to the surface in a center pipe, while the gas will travel in the space between the center pipe and the casing (the annulus).
At the surface, water will be deposited into storage tanks, then treated and removed from the drill site. Produced water will then be taken to a government licensed commercial disposal site for final treatment and disposal. Depending on the volume and quality of the gas, it may be piped to a local gas distribution system or compressed on-site into canisters as compressed natural gas (CNG).
The natural gas produced from coal seams is almost entirely methane, the same as the gas imported by Bulgaria. Natural gas is a substantially cleaner than coal, oil or burning wood. Natural gas produces 65% fewer emissions than coal per kilowatt hour and 25% fewer emissions than oil. Domestic production of natural gas will reduce the amount of gas Bulgaria must import and provide a cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuel for heating and electrical generation for the local economy.

Geologists and geophysicists have agreed on the existence of a "prospect", a potential field. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult.
Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them has even exceeded 11 000 m! Certain fields can be buried at a depth equivalent to the height of 12 Eiffel Towers ... The derrick is the visible part of the drilling rig. It is a metal tower several tens of meters high. It is used to vertically introduce the drill strings down the hole. These drill strings are made up of metallic tubes screwed end to end. They transmit a rotating movement (rotary drilling) to the drilling tool (the drill bit) and help circulate a liquid called "mud" (because of its appearance) down to the bottom of the well.
The drilling rig works like an enormous electric hand-drill of which the derrick would be the body, the drill strings the drive and the drilling tool the drill bit. The most usual tool is an assembly of three cones -- from which comes the name "tri cone" -- in very hard steel, which crushes the rock. Sometimes when the rock being drilled is very resistant, a single- block tool encrusted with diamonds is used. This wears down the rock by abrasion. Through the drill pipes, at the extremity of which the drill bit rotates, a special mud is injected, which the mud engineer prepares and controls. This mud cools the drill bit and consolidates the sides of the borehole. Moreover it avoids a gushing of oil, gas or water from the layer being drilled, by equilibrating the pressure.
Finally, the mud cleans the bottom of the well. As it makes its way along the pipes, it carries the rock fragments (cuttings) to the surface. The geologist examines these cuttings to discover the characteristics of the rocks being drilled and to detect eventual shows of hydrocarbons. The cuttings, fragments of rock crushed by the drill bit, are brought back up to the surface by the mud. To obtain information on the characteristics of the rock being drilled, a core sample is taken. The drill bit is replaced by a hollow tool called a core sampler, which extracts a cylindrical sample of several meters of rock. This core supplies data on the nature of the rock, the inclination of the layers, the structure, permeability, porosity, fluid content and the fossils present. After having drilled a few hundred of meters, the explorers and drillers undertake measurements down the hole called loggings, by lowering electronic tools into the well to measure the physical parameters of the rock being drilled.
These measures validate, or invalidate, or make more precise the hypotheses put forward earlier about the rocks and the fluids that they contain. The log engineer is responsible for the analysis of the results of the various loggings. The sides of the well are then reinforced by steel tubes screwed end to end. These tubes (called casings) are cemented into the ground. They isolate the various layers encountered. When hydrocarbons are found, and if the pressure is sufficient to allow them come to the surface naturally, the drillers do a flow check. The oil is allowed to come to the surface during several hours or several days through a calibrated hole.
The quantity recovered is measured, as are the changes in pressure at the bottom of the well. In this way, a little more knowledge is gained about the probable productivity of the field. If the field seems promising, the exploration team ends the first discovery well and goes on to drill a second, even several others, several hundred or thousand meters further away. In this way, the exploration team is able to refine its knowledge about the characteristics of the field. The decision to stop drilling is made only when all these appraisal wells have provided sufficient information either to give up the exploration or to envisage future production.

Fossil fuel
Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of carbon and include coal, petroleum and natural gas. Other more commonly used derivatives of fossil fuels include kerosene and propane. They range from volatile materials with low carbon:hydrogen ratios like methane, to liquid petroleum to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, like anthracite coal. Methane can be found in hydrocarbon fields, alone, associated with oil, or in the form of methane clathrates. The theory that fossil fuels formed from the fossilized remains of dead plants by exposure to heat and pressure in the Earth's crust over millions of years (see biogenic theory) was first introduced by Georg Agricola in 1556 and later by Mikhail Lomonosov in the 18th century.
The Energy Information Administration estimates that in 2007 the primary sources of energy consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas 23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in primary energy consumption in the world. Non-fossil sources in 2006 included hydroelectric 6.3%, nuclear 8.5%, and others (geothermal, solar, tidal, wind, wood, waste) amounting to 0.9%. World energy consumption was growing about 2.3% per year.

Natural gas
Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas mixture consisting primarily of methane, but commonly including varying amounts of other higher alkanes, and sometimes a small percentage of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and/or hydrogen sulfide. It is formed when layers of decomposing plant and animal matter are exposed to intense heat and pressure supplied by existing under the surface over millions of years. The energy that the plants originally obtained from the sun is stored in the form of chemical bonds in the gas.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel used as a source of energy for heating, cooking, and electricity generation. It is also used as fuel for vehicles and as a chemical feedstock in the manufacture of plastics and other commercially important organic chemicals. It is a non-renewable resource.
Natural gas is found in deep underground rock formations or associated with other hydrocarbon reservoirs in coal beds and as methane clathrates. Petroleum is another resource and fossil fuel found in close proximity to, and with natural gas. Most natural gas was created over time by two mechanisms: biogenic and thermogenic. Biogenic gas is created by methanogenic organisms in marshes, bogs, landfills, and shallow sediments. Deeper in the earth, at greater temperature and pressure, thermogenic gas is created from buried organic material.

Park Place Energy is a U.S. public company engaged in exploration for oil and natural gas. Our management team has extensive international oil and gas experience.Our goal is to produce natural gas from coal seams in the Dobrich region of northeast Bulgaria.
Between 1965 and 1990 drilling was conducted in and around the area covered by the Block 1-11 Vranino license, and over 220 wells were safely drilled through the aquifers to the coal formations. From these activities, we know the location of the coal formations.
Although the license covers about 400 square kilometers, only about 700 square meters (being an area of about 100 meters by 70 meters) will be used for drilling operations. After the well is placed into production, the drilling area may be reduced. No activities will be conducted on or near environmental areas.
Our project in Bulgaria involves the exploration for gas from subsurface coal formations, or coal seams. Coal seam gas, also called coalbed methane (CBM), is a naturally occurring gas mixture that’s mostly methane.
Coal seam gas generally has more pure concentrations of methane (95%) than other natural gases found in sandstones or carbonate formations. Coal seam gas is formed by the same natural processes that create the coal seams that hold it.
By using the information from the wells previously drilled in the area, we can identify the depths of the local water aquifers to ensure that these aquifers are not damaged during drilling or production operations.
In the coal seams, the gas adheres to the surface of the coal (known as the matrix) and is also found in the system of naturally occurring fractures (known as cleats). The gas is trapped in the coal matrix and the cleats by water and ground pressure. Extracting the gas involves drilling into the coal seam and reducing the formation pressure primarily by pumping off the water in the formation. As a consequence of the lower pressure, the gas is released from the coal matrix and flows through the cleats to the well bore and then onward to the surface.
All of the casings will be cemented back to the surface, providing multiple mechanical barriers to protect the local water aquifers.
Coal seams are generally found at depths between 1500 and 2000 meters. The pressure integrity of the casing and cement is tested at every one of the casing before the final wellbore section is drilled through the coal seams. During the drilling of the final section, core samples will be obtained. Analysis of these core samples will allow us to determine if the coal seams produce coal bed methane. After testing is completed, we will install and cement the production casing. This ensures that the well is completely cased and cemented with no possibility of gas escaping in an uncontrolled manner.
Once the drilling procedure ends, the drilling rig is removed and a temporary wellhead is installed. A perforation gun is lowered to the coal seams. A high- pressure gas jet is released, piercing the casing and cement barrier to penetrate the coal seam. This process does not involve the injection of fluids, chemicals or sand which would occur with fracking.
Water and gas will then flow from the coal seams into the wellbore. The water will be piped to the surface in a center pipe, while the gas will travel in the space between the center pipe and the casing (the annulus).
At the surface, water will be deposited into storage tanks, then treated and removed from the drill site. Produced water will then be taken to a government licensed commercial disposal site for final treatment and disposal. Depending on the volume and quality of the gas, it may be piped to a local gas distribution system or compressed on-site into canisters as compressed natural gas (CNG).
The natural gas produced from coal seams is almost entirely methane, the same as the gas imported by Bulgaria. Natural gas is a substantially cleaner than coal, oil or burning wood. Natural gas produces 65% fewer emissions than coal per kilowatt hour and 25% fewer emissions than oil. Domestic production of natural gas will reduce the amount of gas Bulgaria must import and provide a cleaner, more environmentally friendly fuel for heating and electrical generation for the local economy.

Geologists and geophysicists have agreed on the existence of a "prospect", a potential field. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult.
Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them has even exceeded 11 000 m! Certain fields can be buried at a depth equivalent to the height of 12 Eiffel Towers ... The derrick is the visible part of the drilling rig. It is a metal tower several tens of meters high. It is used to vertically introduce the drill strings down the hole. These drill strings are made up of metallic tubes screwed end to end. They transmit a rotating movement (rotary drilling) to the drilling tool (the drill bit) and help circulate a liquid called "mud" (because of its appearance) down to the bottom of the well.
The drilling rig works like an enormous electric hand-drill of which the derrick would be the body, the drill strings the drive and the drilling tool the drill bit. The most usual tool is an assembly of three cones -- from which comes the name "tri cone" -- in very hard steel, which crushes the rock. Sometimes when the rock being drilled is very resistant, a single- block tool encrusted with diamonds is used. This wears down the rock by abrasion. Through the drill pipes, at the extremity of which the drill bit rotates, a special mud is injected, which the mud engineer prepares and controls. This mud cools the drill bit and consolidates the sides of the borehole. Moreover it avoids a gushing of oil, gas or water from the layer being drilled, by equilibrating the pressure.
Finally, the mud cleans the bottom of the well. As it makes its way along the pipes, it carries the rock fragments (cuttings) to the surface. The geologist examines these cuttings to discover the characteristics of the rocks being drilled and to detect eventual shows of hydrocarbons. The cuttings, fragments of rock crushed by the drill bit, are brought back up to the surface by the mud. To obtain information on the characteristics of the rock being drilled, a core sample is taken. The drill bit is replaced by a hollow tool called a core sampler, which extracts a cylindrical sample of several meters of rock. This core supplies data on the nature of the rock, the inclination of the layers, the structure, permeability, porosity, fluid content and the fossils present. After having drilled a few hundred of meters, the explorers and drillers undertake measurements down the hole called loggings, by lowering electronic tools into the well to measure the physical parameters of the rock being drilled.
These measures validate, or invalidate, or make more precise the hypotheses put forward earlier about the rocks and the fluids that they contain. The log engineer is responsible for the analysis of the results of the various loggings. The sides of the well are then reinforced by steel tubes screwed end to end. These tubes (called casings) are cemented into the ground. They isolate the various layers encountered. When hydrocarbons are found, and if the pressure is sufficient to allow them come to the surface naturally, the drillers do a flow check. The oil is allowed to come to the surface during several hours or several days through a calibrated hole.
The quantity recovered is measured, as are the changes in pressure at the bottom of the well. In this way, a little more knowledge is gained about the probable productivity of the field. If the field seems promising, the exploration team ends the first discovery well and goes on to drill a second, even several others, several hundred or thousand meters further away. In this way, the exploration team is able to refine its knowledge about the characteristics of the field. The decision to stop drilling is made only when all these appraisal wells have provided sufficient information either to give up the exploration or to envisage future production.

"You could take it apart and sell the pieces one by one, and you'd get a lot more than $8,000," said auctioneer Mark Delzell, making the hard sell. "I had one of these and I backed into a pole and they charged me more. The brakes don't work? The top does, at least. You could coast down a hill with the top down. You'd get a nice breeze."
It worked. The seller removed the secret "reserve" price, which means the highest bid would now be accepted, and bidding soon went past $10,000.
It was just one of 3,000 cars, trucks, boats and other collector vehicles up for bid at the Mecum Kissimmee Auction at the Silver Spurs Arena, which runs until next Sunday.
"This is the world's largest collector car auction," said Mecum CEO Dave Magers."It's one of 12 car auctions we do this year, and we start with the largest. It's like NASCAR with Daytona. Our first event is the biggest of the year."

The highlight of the auction in recent years has been its collection of muscle cars — this year, the event had 30 from the prime muscle years 1969 to 1971 — but there was a mix of everything, from a tiny 1972 Fiat 500 to a basic black 1928 Ford Model A, and from a bright red 1953 Cadillac Eldorado to a cool blue 1968 Buick Skylark. It was like a traffic jam outside of time and space.
"If you can't find it here, you can't find it anywhere," said the Skylark's owner, Don Newcombe of Clearwater. "Three thousand cars for sale? People come from all over the world."
For John Geigle of Palm Harbor, "I'm just looking for a steal," he said. He had arrived a little late on Saturday and missed out on bidding for an Aston Martin, a Jaguar and a Mercedes.
"I look at everything," Geigle said. "If it's a good buy, I'm not going to pass it up."
But while there were a lot of collectors — who were buying up cars to keep in garages, or to just turn around and sell again — there were a few who wanted a car for the purpose of having a car.
"He just wants one to drive," said Dawn Dickerson of her husband, Dana.
Of course, some of the vehicles would look a little strange driving down the street to the Wawa, including Bob Taylor's 1935 black Ford paddy wagon — complete with horn and siren. The fact that a bunch of jailbirds in black and white stripes didn't leap out when he opened the door could be considered a disappointment.
"My wife and I bought it in 1974," said Taylor, of Montrose, Pa. "It had 12,000 actual miles on it. Now it has 28,000 — and every bit of that has been driven."
So why sell it now?
"It's time," Taylor said wistfully. "We've owned it for 41 years. My wife's getting ready to retire, I'm retired. It's time for someone else to enjoy it. [But] there's a lot of personal history here."
It was a bittersweet parting for Lynn Camarda of New Hampshire, as well.
"It was my late husband's, his pride and joy," Camarda said of her 1955 Chevrolet pickup. "It's been four years, and I decided it needs to go to a home with big people who can drive it. I can drive it, but it's difficult."
Outside, a landlocked boat loomed over the tents, like a modern Noah's Ark had come to rest in Kissimmee following the day's torrential rains. Though this ark was powered by four 627-horsepower Seven Marine outboard engines.
"It's the world's largest outboard-powered center-console custom boat," said Nick Aldous, assistant at Hydrosports Custom out of Islamorada, who said a reporter would have to take his shoes off to climb aboard. "We get worldwide exposure here. Someone can buy it online from Alaska."
Besides motored vehicles big and small, there was also a huge collection of what Mecum called "automobilia," including neon signs, road signs and other mementos of the past.
"Steltzer's Garage" read one sign, along with "Bud's Service Center," "Pacific Oil," "Sinclair Aircraft" and "Boyce MotoMeter." One intriguing sign was for BruinOil, "the bear of them all."
"I remember when some of this stuff was on gas stations and had no value," said Sal Agostino of Sarasota. "Who knew?"
In the end, the prime condition of the signs, the cars and everything at the auction held a lesson for owners like Newcombe.
"I wish I took care of myself the way I took care of this car," he said of his Skylark.

Up to 900 people attended the opening rally. Amy Leather from the central committee of the Socialist Workers
Party (SWP) said, “The theme of Marxism is ideas for revolution—we need to make those ideas a reality.”
Events in Greece dominated the event (see below).
Several meetings discussed struggle and austerity in Britain.
At a meeting on class Joseph Choonara argued that people feel more precarious than they are and that the working
class can transform society.
A debate on why there are so few strikes in Britain looked at whether there has been a structural change in the
working class. Some argued that focusing only on structural changes could miss underlying shifts in workers’ mood
to fight.
Bfawu union president Ian Hodson spoke in one session, along with striking Glasgow homelessness caseworkers and
two sacked porters from Sotheby’s.
There was a live link-up with a US McDonald’s worker. Members of Glasgow socialist choir—Unite, Fight, Sing—
finished the meeting with a song from the US fast food strikers’ picket lines.
The Glasgow strikers raised around £1,000 for their strike fund over the weekend.

Some 70 students met for a picnic on Friday afternoon.
Many were at Marxism for the first time, including Iona from Brighton University.
She told Socialist Worker, “I came because I want to get more politically active. There’s no other event like
this—I love it.”
Greece—the big debate
Socialists from Greece spoke about the struggle there and debated the best way to take it forward.
Stathis Kouvelakis from the central committee of Syriza, the left party in government in Greece, debated Alex
Callinicos on Saturday.
This followed Syriza passing an austerity deal through the Greek parliament.
Stathis argued that there had been a “failure of political strategy” in Greece.
Alex stressed that this was not the end of the battle and said the mass mobilisation of workers pointed to the
way forward.
Panos Garganas, editor of the Workers’ Solidarity newspaper in Greece, spoke from the floor.
He said, “The game is not over. But we have discovered the referee is against us.”
He said Syriza had made the mistake of thinking it could make the bosses see reason.
“We’ve used the ballot box,” he said.
“Now we have to use workers’ power in the workplace.”

Over 2,700 people gathered in central London for the Marxism 2015 festival last weekend. They included striking
workers, students, campaigners and socialists from across the globe.
Up to 900 people attended the opening rally. Amy Leather from the central committee of the Socialist Workers
Party (SWP) said, “The theme of Marxism is ideas for revolution—we need to make those ideas a reality.”
Events in Greece dominated the event (see below).
Several meetings discussed struggle and austerity in Britain.
At a meeting on class Joseph Choonara argued that people feel more precarious than they are and that the working
class can transform society.
A debate on why there are so few strikes in Britain looked at whether there has been a structural change in the
working class. Some argued that focusing only on structural changes could miss underlying shifts in workers’ mood
to fight.
Bfawu union president Ian Hodson spoke in one session, along with striking Glasgow homelessness caseworkers and
two sacked porters from Sotheby’s.
There was a live link-up with a US McDonald’s worker. Members of Glasgow socialist choir—Unite, Fight, Sing—
finished the meeting with a song from the US fast food strikers’ picket lines.
The Glasgow strikers raised around £1,000 for their strike fund over the weekend.
Racism
