The Acropolis Museum (Greek: Μουσείο Ακρόπολης, Mouseio Akropolis) is an archaeological museum focused on the findings of the archaeological site of the Acropolis of Athens. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock and on its feet, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece. It also lies on the archaeological site of Makrygianni and the ruins of a part of Roman and early Byzantine Athens.
The museum was founded in 2003, while the Organization of the Museum was established in 2008. It opened to the public on 20 June 2009. Nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres. The Organization for the Construction of the new museum is chaired by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Professor Emeritus of Archaeology, Dimitrios Pandermalis.
The first museum was on the Acropolis; it was completed in 1874 and underwent a moderate expansion in the 1950s. However, successive excavations on the Acropolis uncovered many new artifacts which significantly exceeded its original capacity.
An acropolis (Greek: ἀκρόπολις; from akros or akron, "highest", "topmost", "outermost" and polis, "city"; plural in English: acropoles, acropoleis or acropolises) is a settlement, especially a citadel, built upon an area of elevated ground—frequently a hill with precipitous sides, chosen for purposes of defense. In many parts of the world, acropoleis became the nuclei of large cities of classical antiquity, such as ancient Rome, and for this reason they are sometimes prominent landmarks in modern cities with ancient pasts, such as modern Rome.
The word acropolis literally means in Greek "upper city," and though associated primarily with the Greek cities Athens, Argos ( with Larissa), Thebes (with Cadmea), and Corinth (with its Acrocorinth), may be applied generically to all such citadels, including Rome, Jerusalem, Celtic Bratislava, many in Asia Minor, or even Castle Rock in Edinburgh. An example in Ireland is the Rock of Cashel. Acropolis is also the term used by archaeologists and historians for the urban Castro culture settlements located in Northwestern Iberian hilltops.
A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.
New Acropolis (NA; official name: Organización Internacional Nueva Acrópolis "OINA" - Organisation Internationale Nouvelle Acropole, association internationale sans but lucratif) is a worldwide non-profit organisation founded in 1957 by Jorge Ángel Livraga Rizzi (died 1991) first as a school of philosophy and later on as an international organization devoted to philosophical studies and practice. The Acropolis of Athens (Ancient Greek: Ἀκρόπολις;Modern Greek: Ακρόπολη Αθηνών Akrópoli Athinón) is an ancient citadel located on a high rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historic significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis comes from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "highest point, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city"). Although there are many other acropoleis in Greece, the significance of the Acropolis of Athens is such that it is commonly known as "The Acropolis" without qualification.
While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495 – 429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the site's most important buildings including the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians in the Morean War when the Parthenon was being used for gunpowder storage and was hit by a cannonball.

Travel video about destination Acropolis in Greece. For more than 2500 years a landmark and symbol of one of the most influential European cultures, the Acropolis, has towered above the rooftops of Athens. It took nine years to build the great temple of the goddess Athene, known as The Parthenon, that was completed in 438 B.C. Unique among all other Greek temples, with its imposing appearance and artistic decoration, the Parthenon signified the great influence and power of ancient Athens. Just a few metres from the Athens Temple, the Acropolis Museum contains numerous outstanding archaeological treasures that have been discovered in this vicinity. The majority of the exhibits date back to the 5th and 6th centuries, a richly golden time in the culture of ancient Greece. Since 1878 the museu...

Whoever visits the Greek capital, takes a pilgrimage to the fountain of European culture. The city’s most famous building is the Citadel 150 meters above sea level, the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The statues, reliefs and frieses of Acropolis Museum and the Archeological Museum of Athens show us the classical beauty ideal and the perfect sense of proportion. The Agora tells us about the life of ancient Athens, while the Plaka with its narrow roads introduces us to a vivid, Eastern bazaar. In front of the parlament, funnily dressed guards give guard of honor. The city can be best seen from the Likavitos mountain, and the sunset is also the most beautiful from here. From Athens we can take a trip to the port of Pireus, to the monument of the battle a...

For our travel section we thought to start with the basics. “Acropolis 101” course from our host Chris Tantalakis. Acropolis is a world renowned monument that no one should miss. The Acropolis hill overlooks Athens and hosts the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Erechtheion and the temple of Athena Nike, each one of them very significant for its own purposes and style. Τhe Parthenon, dates back in the fifth century BC, in the golden age of Pericles, it was the greatest and finest sanctuary of the ancient world, dedicated to the patron of the city of Athens, goddess Athena. All the monuments up on this “sacred hill” are unique masterpieces of architecture and art combining many different styles of Classical art, having influenced culture for many centuries until today.
