A presidio (from the Spanish, presidir, meaning "to preside" or "to oversee") is a fortified base established by the Spanish in areas under their control or influence.
The fortresses were built to protect against pirates, hostile Native Americans, and colonists from enemy nations. Later in western North America, with independence, the Mexicans garrisoned the Spanish presidios on the northern frontier and followed the same pattern in unsettled frontier regions like the Presidio de Sonoma, at Sonoma, California and the Presidio de Calabasas, in Arizona.
In western North America, a rancho del rey or king's ranch would be established a short distance outside a presidio. This was a tract of land assigned to the presidio to furnish pasturage to the horses and other beasts of burden of the garrison. Mexico called this facility "rancho nacional".

The Presidio is a 1988 American crime drama film directed by Peter Hyams, starring Sean Connery and Mark Harmon. Hyams also photographed. The score was composed by Bruce Broughton.
At the Presidio Army base in San Francisco, MP Patti Jean Lynch (Jenette Goldstein) is shot dead while investigating a break-in on the base and two San Francisco Police officers are killed in the getaway. Jay Austin (Mark Harmon), a San Francisco police inspector, is sent to investigate. He clashes with Lieutenant Colonel Alan Caldwell (Sean Connery), the base Provost Marshal.
Years ago, Austin and Lynch were partners while serving as MPs and Caldwell was their commanding officer. When Austin arrested Colonel Paul Lawrence (Dana Gladstone), Caldwell didn't support him. In the aftermath, Austin was demoted and decided to leave the army. Austin and Caldwell share a mutual dislike for one another.
The murder investigation casts suspicion on Lawrence, as Lynch was killed with a Tokarev, a Russian pistol. Lawrence is the registered owner of a Tokarev, but claims he lost it in a poker game. Austin also learns that the getaway car used by Lynch's killer was registered to a civilian named Arthur Peale (Mark Blum), who is wealthy and owns a holding company that, in turn, owns other companies.
San Francisco (/sæn frənˈsɪskoʊ/), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California and the only consolidated city-county in California. San Francisco encompasses a land area of about 46.9 square miles (121 km2) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, which makes it the smallest county in the state. It has a density of about 18,187 people per square mile (7,022 people per km2), making it the most densely settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in the state of California and the second-most densely populated major city in the United States after New York City. San Francisco is the fourth-most populous city in California, after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, and the 13th-most populous city in the United States—with a Census-estimated 2014 population of 852,469. The city and its surrounding areas are known as the San Francisco Bay Area, and are a part of the larger OMB designated San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth most populous in the nation with an estimated population of 8.6 million.

A video cut together from footage I shot while walking around The Presidio. Even when the weather's not so hot, it's always nice in The Presidio. Music | Coldplay - "Lost"
This video was put together using archive footage circa 1950 (in the public domain) of the 3rd Avenue elevated train, that ran from Battery Park to the Harlem River along the Bowery and Third Avenue New York. The line was closed on May 12, 1955. It was Kantor Tzar Collectif's intention when using this footage to pay homage to the era and city that they love. We all ride the same journey's end.........some minus the distractions, some not! Enjoy Kantor Tzar Collectif

My friend Chad and I went and took some aerial photos by the old VA Hospital on the edge of San Francisco's Presidio district. The stills were taken with an old HP digital camera mounted to a servo controlled carrier dangling off of a 30 cubic foot parafoil. I shot the video with my Canon 550D T2i equipped with the kit lens. Enjoy! Music by Nico

To what do you not drive
Mortal hearts
Accursed hunger for gold?
Cheaply bought, but deadly sold
With new light they shine on through
On fields of shredded goals
Reap crop of clinging hope
Harvest our brave new world
Ancient woe, be gone
Foul illusions of better life
Compared to what, I ask
Does this truth of life coerce?
Juxtaposed they are not
