The Pickle Family Circus was a small circus founded in 1974 in San Francisco, California, USA. The circus formed an important part of the renewal of the American circus. They also influenced the creation of Cirque du Soleil in Montreal. Neither circus features animals or use the three-ring layout like the traditional circus.
After working with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the Pickle Family Jugglers (founded by Peggy Snider, Larry Pisoni, and Cecil MacKinnon) decided to create the Pickle Family Circus. Their first show was in May 1975, in the gymnasium of John O'Connell School in San Francisco. After they received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1976, they went on their first tour, going to five cities in Northern California. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Circus performed on weekends in the San Francisco Bay area during Spring and Fall, and toured for 3 months in the summer, mostly in towns along Highway 101 in Northern California and Oregon. In these years, the Pickles operated with a business model that every show was a benefit, usually for a local community organization. The local sponsor sold advance tickets (getting a portion of the revenue), did publicity and site preparation, and ran a midway. The Circus returned to the same towns year after year, and these events became an important source of funding for the sponsors. This freed the company from much of the advance work. In 1979, the Pickles extended their tour to perform at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer, Alaska, and in 1981 performed a two-month winter run at the Roundhouse Theater in London.
The Family Circus (originally The Family Circle) is a syndicated comic strip created by cartoonist Bil Keane and currently written, inked, and colored by his son, Jeff Keane. The strip generally uses a single captioned panel with a round border, hence the original name of the series, which was changed following objections from the magazine Family Circle. The series debuted on February 29, 1960, and has been in continuous production ever since. According to publisher King Features Syndicate, it is the most widely syndicated cartoon panel in the world, appearing in 1,500 newspapers. Compilations of Family Circus comic strips have sold over 13 million copies worldwide.
The central characters of Family Circus are a family whose surname is rarely mentioned (although the cartoon of August 26, 2013, in which Billy refers to "Grandma Keane" and "Grandma Carne" indicates the same surnames as the author's family). The parents, Bil and Thelma (Thel), are modeled after the author and his wife, Thelma Carne Keane. Their four children, Billy, Dolly, Jeffy, and P.J., are fictionalized composites of the Keanes' five children. With the exception of P.J., no characters have aged appreciably during the run of the strip.

I was visiting my sister and her family in San Mateo, California in the summer of 1989 and we went to a performance by the Pickle Family Circus. I checked the program beforehand and noticed the name of a classmate from the High School of Performing Arts (the "Fame" school) and wondered if it was the same person. It was indeed my old friend Rosalind Rojas, who is first seen in the pink dress and is then seen performing a trapeze act with her husband. There is juggling and a balancing act also. I went backstage to greet her afterwards. This is silent Super 8 film footage with music taken from the YouTube library.

Life lessons fly fast and funny for Lorenzo Pisoni when he joins the family business -- San Francisco's Pickle Family Circus -- at the age of six, earning his clown college stripes (and polka dots) through on-the-job training with his exacting father as his role model, guru and comic foil. In his autobiographical "Humor Abuse," Pisoni is a one-man whirlwind: spinning stories like plates and performing side-splitting physical feats with aplomb, mixing heart and humor in a tenderly rendered homage to the consummate performer, parent and perfectionist who taught him everything he needed to fill some very big shoes. "Humor Abuse" runs Sept 17 - Nov 3, 2013 at the Mark Taper Forum. http://www.centertheatregroup.org/tickets/Humor-Abuse/

[Mono] Entertaining, but informative PSA, on water conservation during California's last modern drought period. Performed by members of the legendary Pickle Family Circus. Water waste is a crime, no matter where it is in the world.

There's a way it ought to be
And there's a way it is
Love and hate at the same moment
Never agree about anything
Not another broken promise
No such thing as privacy
Screaming at the top of your lungs
To get someone's attention
Life is often difficult
Another miserable child
No one ever changes
This routine never ends
Family circus, daddy's little lave
Family circus, he'll put you in the grave
Family circus, mother wants to run away
Family circus, another unpleasant day
The dog got ran over
And he's still OK
The cat jumps on the table
And starts to eat your dinner
Little sister's pregnant
Brother got put in jail
Mom screams and yells at her kids
Dad screams and yells at her
A holiday is here
A day of guilt and grace
Grandma keeps telling you
How it was in her day
Family circus, arguing every day
Family circus, not another emotional wave
Family circus, it keeps going in circles
Family circus, even when you're old and grey
Kiss and hug a relative
You hardly even know
Affection, attention, concern
Is never shown around here
A psycho babysitter
Took the dog for a walk
Oh! Not another lecture
You can't make your own decision
Go out and get a job
And cut off all your hair
Or work at the garbage dump
And keep playing guitar
Family circus, endless frustration
Family circus, yelling and aggravation
Family circus, the dog never stops barking
