Sensō-ji (金龍山浅草寺, Kinryū-zan Sensō-ji?) is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Asakusa, Taitō, Tokyo, Japan. It is Tokyo's oldest temple, and one of its most significant. Formerly associated with the Tendai sect, it became independent after World War II. Adjacent to the temple is a Shinto shrine, the Asakusa Shrine.
The temple is dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon, also known as Guan Yin or the Goddess of Mercy. According to legend, a statue of the Kannon was found in the Sumida River in 628 by two fishermen, the brothers Hinokuma Hamanari and Hinokuma Takenari. The chief of their village, Hajino Nakamoto, recognized the sanctity of the statue and enshrined it by remodeling his own house into a small temple in Asakusa, so that the villagers could worship the Kannon.
The first temple was built on the site in 645, which makes it the oldest temple in Tokyo. In the early years of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensō-ji as tutelary temple of the Tokugawa clan.
The Nishinomiya Inari Shrine is located within the precincts of Sensō-ji; and a torii identifies the entry into the hallowed ground of a Shinto shrine. A bronze plaque on the gateway structure lists those who contributed to the construction of the torii, which was erected in 1727 (Kyōhō 12, 11th month).

By far one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist attractions, the Sensō-ji is located in heart of Tokyo : Asakusa.
The Sensō-ji is Tokyo’s oldest temple and was founded in 645. The temple is dedicated to the Bodhisattva (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhisattva) and according to the legend the temple was erected after two fisherman found a Statue of Kannon buried in the near by river the Sumida.
Despite its popularity and ancestry the Asakusa temple has quickly become one of these cheap tourist attraction where hundreds of small crappy souvenir shops have been erected along the Nakamise street (200m) that separate the main entrance of the temple: the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) to the temple itself.
Still Sensō-ji and its five-storied pagoda are a true architecture and cultural wonder if you don’t mind visiting an over crowded place and where the spiritual has been slowly but surely replaced by this century mercantilism.

Saya membuat video in Sensoji Temple
Jalan yang kami tempuh rupanya menembus lurus disamping kuil Sensoji. Jadi kalau orang lain pergi ke Sensoji dimulai dari Kaminarimon Gate kemudian Nakamise Street, kita berjalan kebalikannya dari Sensoji dulu baru keluar dari Kaminarimon Gate menuju Asakusa Station. Sebagai kuil tertua di Tokyo, Sensoji menjadi kuil yang paling sering dikunjungi. Gerbangnya ada dua, Kaminarimon Gate (Thunder Gate) yang berada di area terluar. Gerbang ini ditandai dengan lentera kertas berukuran raksasa yang dicat warna merah dan hitam melambangkan petir dan awan.

Melewati Kaminarimon Gate, pecinta belanja akan dimanjakan dengan deretan toko sepanjang kurang lebih 200 meter dijalan Nakamise Street yang banyak berjualan souvenir seperti Yukata, Kimono dan makanan tradisional Jepang seperti Osenbei (rice crackers) dan Ningyoyaki (kue kacang merah). Deretan toko ini sebenarnya sudah ada sejak abad ke 18 dimana orang mulai diijinkan untuk berjualan didekat kuil dan menjual berbagai macam barang kepada peziarah yang berdatangan.

Didalam kompleks yang cukup luas ini terdapat taman-taman dan Hall (rumah-rumah kecil) yang sebenarnya menyenangkan untuk dinikmati pelan-pelan. Jadi kalau orang lain pergi ke Sensoji dimulai dari Kaminarimon Gate kemudian Nakamise Street, kita berjalan kebalikannya dari Sensoji dulu baru keluar dari Kaminarimon Gate menuju Asakusa Station. Sebagai kuil tertua di Tokyo, Sensoji menjadi kuil yang paling sering dikunjungi. Gerbangnya ada dua, Kaminarimon Gate (Thunder Gate) yang berada di area terluar. Gerbang ini ditandai dengan lentera kertas berukuran raksasa yang dicat warna merah dan hitam melambangkan petir dan awan. Kaminarimon Gate Kaminarimon Gate Melewati Kaminarimon Gate, pecinta belanja akan dimanjakan dengan deretan toko sepanjang kurang lebih 200 meter dijalan Nakamise Street yang banyak berjualan souvenir seperti Yukata, Kimono dan makanan tradisional Jepang seperti Osenbei (rice crackers) dan Ningyoyaki (kue kacang merah). Deretan toko ini sebenarnya sudah ada sejak abad ke 18 dimana orang mulai diijinkan untuk berjualan didekat kuil dan menjual berbagai macam barang kepada peziarah yang berdatangan. Nakamise Street (Kiri Atas), Ningyoyaki (Kanan Atas), Ong Nakamise Street (Kiri Atas), Ningyoyaki (Kanan Atas), Penjual Osenbei (Kiri Bawah), Hozomon Gate (Kanan Bawah) Dari Nakamise street sampailah di gerbang kedua yaitu Hozomon Gate (Treasure House Gate) yang merupakan versi mini dari Kaminarimon Gate dan menjadi tempat awal bila kita ingin mengeskplore Sensoji. Didalam kompleks yang cukup luas ini terdapat taman-taman dan Hall (rumah-rumah kecil) yang sebenarnya menyenangkan untuk dinikmati pelan-pelan. Tsukiji Market Keluar dari gerbang Kaminarimon Gate di Sensoji Temple kami berjalan menuju Asakusa Station untuk melanjutkan perjalanan menuju Tsukiji Market. There has been a "turning point" in the Ebola crisis, with cases falling in the three affected countries, World Health Organization officials say. Just eight cases were detected in Liberia in the last week down from a peak of 500-a-week in September. Guinea and Sierra Leone have also seen falls. The WHO said the figures were the "most promising" since the outbreak started ... All are now showing falls in weekly cases ... ....

While of course I had heard about the shrine at Asakusa in northern Tokyo, everyone initially told me to go there for its infamous colorful market rather than the shrine, which is known to be one of the more traditional markets in the city. I did in fact find it interesting and took a boat load of photos -- see my separate article on the Asakusa Market ... Located in Asakusa, the shrine honors the three men who founded the Sensō-ji....
