Geelong (/dʒᵻˈlɒŋ/) is a port city located on Corio Bay and the Barwon River, in the state of Victoria, Australia, 75 kilometres (47 mi) south-west of the state capital, Melbourne. It is the second largest Victorian city, with an estimated urban population of 184,182 as at June 2014, having grown 1.4 percent since June 2013.
Geelong runs from the plains of Lara in the north to the rolling hills of Waurn Ponds to the south, with Corio Bay to the east and hills to the west. Geelong is the administrative centre for the City of Greater Geelong municipality, which covers urban, rural and coastal areas surrounding the city, including the Bellarine Peninsula.
Geelong City is also known as the 'Gateway City' due to its central location to surrounding Victorian regional centres like Ballarat in the north west, Torquay, Great Ocean Road and Warrnambool in the southwest, Hamilton, Colac and Winchelsea to the west, and the state capital of Melbourne in the north east.
Geelong was named in 1827, with the name derived from the local Wathaurong Aboriginal name for the region, Jillong, thought to mean "land" or "cliffs". The area was first surveyed in 1838, three weeks after Melbourne. The post office was open by June 1840 (the second to open in the Port Phillip District). The first woolstore was erected in this period and it became the port for the wool industry of the Western District. During the gold rush, Geelong experienced a brief boom as the main port to the rich goldfields of the Ballarat district. The city then diversified into manufacturing, and during the 1860s, it became one of the largest manufacturing centres in Australia with its wool mills, ropeworks, and paper mills.
Geelong Football Club, nicknamed the Cats, are a professional Australian rules football club based in the city of Geelong, Australia and playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club have been the VFL/AFL premiers nine times, with three in the AFL era (since 1990). They have also won nine McClelland Trophies, a record shared with Essendon.
The club was formed in 1859, making it the second oldest club in the AFL after Melbourne and one of the oldest football clubs in the world. Geelong participated in the first football competition in Australia and was a foundation club of both the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in 1877 and the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1897.
The club first established itself in the VFA by playing off in a record eleven Grand Finals and winning seven premierships, making it the most successful VFA club leading up to the formation of the VFL in 1897. The club won a further six premierships by 1963, before enduring a 44-year waiting period until it won its next premiership—an AFL-record 119-point victory in the 2007 AFL Grand Final. Geelong have since won a further two premierships in 2009 and 2011.

MATCH REVIEW with Tysio100: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwrkbR63EV0 Sunday 14th August 2016, what a heart-stopper! The Cats turned a deplorable first 3 quarters into an astonishing victory against the unpredictable Tigers. The 35-point comeback from 3-quarter time was the 18th biggest ever recovery in the league and the 3rd biggest in the history of the Geelong Football Club. However, for most of the afternoon it was some of the worst football played by the Cats for the season. There was more play in Geelong's forward half, but greatly struggled to translate that into scores. It was 2 goals apiece in the 1st quarter, but Richmond had a slender 2-behind lead at the 1st change. Things really fell apart for the Cats in the 2nd term when the Tigers piled on 4 goals straight in a 7-minute p...

Sunday 6th May 2007, the day that started it all for the Cats. After a wasted season in 2006 and a disappointing first 5 rounds of the 2007 season, the Geelong team had a hard look at themselves asking each other whether they were all committed to the task. The response could not have been anymore emphatic when they took on a lethargic Richmond side in Round 6 at Telstra Dome. Geelong completely annihilated the Tigers in every area of the contest, but most famously it was on the scoreboard. With back-to-back 10-goal quarters, the Cats recorded the equal 3rd-highest ever 1st half score. They added another 9 goals in the 3rd term to record the highest three-quarter time score of all time – 29.9 (183). A comparatively quiet 6-goal last quarter meant the Cats would not break their recorded for...

Sitting on the edge of Corio Bay the dynamic city of Geelong is the eastern gateway to the dramatic coastline of the Great Ocean Road. Conde Nast travel magazine rates the Great Ocean Road as one of the top 20 journeys of a lifetime while Frommer's guide puts it in the top 10 road trips on the planet. Don't just take their word for it, try it for yourself.
those times feel so distant grey
are these someone else’s memories?
We were brothers
tied to each other’s days
we were known and loved by the sun
feared by our enemies
when did you cross over to this sleeping wake vacant
stare cuts right through words and leaves the thought
stopped dead
inside far is it lost
such a might
why exhaust?
but you aren’t the same
you forgot your strength
when you were before you’d
break through that door and destroy the day
but now you don’t go through that door
and now I hate that you do what you’re told to do that’s
not you yeah well now you’ve got to go back to seek what
you knew and I can’t stand to see you cower anymore
swear, never tire from this road
dont you ever hold
change should be your home
