Twenty years have passed since the oil tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound. It has been called the worst environmental disaster of our times. Environmentalists say the area will never be as before, even though ExxonMobil says it has cleaned up the spill and is a good corporate citizen. Producer Zulima Palacio reports that nature, wildlife, and even local residents of the area are still far from recovery.

Climbing 200 foot frozen waterfalls, participants are helping make the dream of Levitation 49, a non-profit sports commission, a reality. Organizers hope that by hosting outdoor events year round, Valdez will attract new businesses and year-round residents.

Valdez, Alaska
Valdez /vælˈdiːz/ (Alutiiq: Suacit) is a city in Valdez-Cordova Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska. According to the 2010 US Census, the population of the city is 3,976. The city is one of the most important ports in Alaska. The port of Valdez was named in 1790 after the Spanish Navy Minister Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán.
Economy
Valdez is a fishing port, both for commercial and sport fishing. Freight moves through Valdez bound for the interior of Alaska. Sightseeing of the marine life and glaciers, together with both deep-sea fishing, and heli skiing support a tourist industry in Valdez. The oil from the Trans-Alaska pipeline is loaded onto ships at the Valdez oil terminal.
Alyeska Pipeline Service Company is one of the biggest employers in town but it started to move several positions to its headquarters in Anchorage since the town council passed a resolution charging a tax to all the tankers coming into the port to be loaded with oil. This has had an impact in the population size and the economy.

Alaska Still Struggles to Recover from Exxon Valdez Spill
Twenty years have passed since the oil tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound. It has been called the worst environmental disaster of our times. Environmentalists say the area will never be as before, even though ExxonMobil says it has cleaned up the spill and is a good corporate citizen. Producer Zulima Palacio reports that nature, wildlife, and even local residents of the area are still far from recovery.

Exxon Valdez leaked more than 40 million litres of crude oil into Alaska's pristine waterways nineteen years ago. Today, oil is still polluting the shores and bankrupted fishermen are still waiting for the $5 billion payout granted in 1994.
After a series of appeals by the company, $5 billion became $2.5. Now that the case has reached the increasingly pro-business US Supreme Court, fishermen fear they could end up with nothing. While ExxonMobil claims the area has returned to robust health, locals tell of vastly depleted fish stocks, which almost disappeared after the spill. ExxonMobil claims the fish fell victim to a virus, a theory disputed by the fishermen, who are backed by scientific evidence: "The fish can't disappear like they're telling the public. [Exxon's]] explanation just isn't practical," says an expert. As the legal case drags on, a fifth of the plaintiffs have died and the rest have lost hope. For them, Exxon has already won no matter what. Yet the oil giant keeps repeating that the spill was a tragic accident and that the company has acted responsibly towards the local communities. Fishermen whose livelihoods were ruined feel cheated: "Exxon says that everything's coming back and everything's fine - it's a lie."

Exxon Valdez leaked more than 40 million litres of crude oil into Alaska's pristine waterways nineteen years ago. Today, oil is still polluting the shores and bankrupted fishermen are still waiting for the $5 billion payout granted in 1994.
After a series of appeals by the company, $5 billion became $2.5. Now that the case has reached the increasingly pro-business US Supreme Court, fishermen fear they could end up with nothing. While ExxonMobil claims the area has returned to robust health, locals tell of vastly depleted fish stocks, which almost disappeared after the spill. ExxonMobil claims the fish fell victim to a virus, a theory disputed by the fishermen, who are backed by scientific evidence: "The fish can't disappear like they're telling the public. [Exxon's]] explanation just isn't practical," says an expert. As the legal case drags on, a fifth of the plaintiffs have died and the rest have lost hope. For them, Exxon has already won no matter what. Yet the oil giant keeps repeating that the spill was a tragic accident and that the company has acted responsibly towards the local communities. Fishermen whose livelihoods were ruined feel cheated: "Exxon says that everything's coming back and everything's fine - it's a lie."

Two years after the Gulf of Mexico disaster BP say the area is back in business. But in reality oil is washing up on the beaches, local residents are falling ill and the peak of the crisis is yet to come.
"We are glad to report all beaches and waters are open", states BP in a new advertising campaign. For the oil company business can resume as normal, but for the communities whose livelihoods rely upon the waters around the Gulf of Mexico business could not be worse: "there are no oysters growing so our future is very uncertain". Moreover, many locals who volunteered during the clear up are now suffering potentially fatal health problems caused by toxins in the chemical BP used to disperse the oil, Corexit 9527. "They are having breathing problems, headaches, breaking out in rashes, asthma...", explains a community worker, Glenda Perryman. And there could still be a wider threat to human health; strong evidence suggests the oil has got into the food chain. "We're finding it in larger quantities over a one-year period after the spill, so it's bio-accumulating. It's going to impact on generations to come", says Wilma Subra, an environmental scientist. As with the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, it will take a few more years before the real impact of this spill is felt. For those in the locality, that may be too late: "I don't know if I am living or dying".

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 1989
On March 23, 1989 the Exxon Valdez an oil supertanker operated by Exxon left the port of Valdez headed for Long beach, CA with almost 54 million gallons of crude oil on board. Shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989, the supertanker collided with Bligh Reef, a well known navigation hazard, ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The result was catastrophic. Although the spill was radioed in shortly after the collision Exxons response was slow. In fact, there was no recovery effort for three days while Exxon searched for clean up equipment. During that time millions of gallons of oil began to spread down the coast. Cordova - the town that bore the brunt of the spill - has seen increased bankruptcies, suicides, alcoholism and domestic violence during the aftermath of the 11 million gallons of oil that spilt over 1,500 miles of idyllic coastline. Captain Young says, "We lost our industry and my son became a drug addict because of the oil spill. Our mayor committed suicide the next year. It impacted the whole town. A lot of people became alcoholics, a lot of divorces". Will those wanting to help people on the Gulf Coast in America learn the lessons of Cordova? These residents certainly hope so.

On March 23, 1989 the Exxon Valdez an oil supertanker operated by Exxon left the port of Valdez headed for Long beach, CA with almost 54 million gallons of crude oil on board. Shortly after midnight on March 24, 1989, the supertanker collided with Bligh Reef, a well known navigation hazard, ruptured 8 of its 11 cargo tanks and spilled 11 million gallons of crude oil into the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The result was catastrophic. Although the spill was radioed in shortly after the collision Exxons response was slow. In fact, there was no recovery effort for three days while Exxon searched for clean up equipment. During that time millions of gallons of oil began to spread down the coast. Days later as the clean up effort began the oil slick was no longer containable. It eventually extended 470 miles to the southwest, contaminated hundreds of miles of coastline. Over the Presidents Day weekend, 300 people gathered in Valdez' Keystone Canyon for the Valdez Ice Climbing Festival. Climbing 200 foot frozen waterfalls, participants are helping make the dream of Levitation 49, a non-profit sports commission, a reality. Now that our Alaska Tour caravan has completed, four families decided to travel home together! Our first night was boondocking (dry camping) along the road just north of Anchorage. The following day we turned south and headed to Valdez, Alaska! The 100 mile drive into Valdez took us past numerous spectacular vistas that we had to stop at and take pictures! In Valdez we found a beautiful campground nestled amongst towering glacial & snow covered mountains! I was able to take multiple quadcopter flights to capture the beauty!

Now that our Alaska Tour caravan has completed, four families decided to travel home together! Our first night was boondocking (dry camping) along the road just north of Anchorage. The following day we turned south and headed to Valdez, Alaska!
The 100 mile drive into Valdez took us past numerous spectacular vistas that we had to stop at and take pictures! In Valdez we found a beautiful campground nestled amongst towering glacial & snow covered mountains! I was able to take multiple quadcopter flights to capture the beauty!

Alaska's Richardson Highway: Glennallen to Valdez

My first stop is a little ways off the highway near Chitna at Copper River and Liberty Falls. It's then back on the scenic Richardson Highway the rest of the way to Valdez. Some of the things we see on the way are: Mt. Billy Mitchell, Worthington Glacier, Thompson Pass, Keystone Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls. Valdez, Alaska
Valdez is an oil port town named after the Spanish naval captain Antonia Valdez. The prime attraction in the areas is the Columbia Glacier. Many tourists take the ferry to view this glacier. There are also two spectacular waterfalls, Bridal Veil and Horsetail, which are found 13 miles up the Richardson Hwy.

Road to Valdez Alaska
After going over the "Top of the World" highway, we wanted to see some mountains with snow and some of the coast. So we headed south into Valdez and were rewarded with beautiful scenery. The sea and glaciers have kept the temperatures here nicely cool, unlike the interior. If we were to plan this trip again, we would have gone from Jasper BC to Prince Rupert and put the RV on the Alaska Ferry, gotten a cabin and taken it up to Vladez.

10 things you need know for traveling to Alaska by RV http://www.easygoingtravelers.com/
We are Brad and Cathy and have been Easy Going Travelers for almost 10 years. We are 5th wheeling folks and enjoy the ease of living in a 40-foot unit with all the stuff of a great journey. We are half-time travelers spending half time in SW Florida and half-time on the road. Originally from New Hampshire and Ohio, traveling is a joy and we are always looking for the road less traveled. If the road has a painted line, or even a little less, we can make it work. Some of our best times are the word of mouth experiences we have found along the way. Fellow travelers sharing their experiences is a highpoint and source of a big part of our travels. Traveling for us is freedom and finding off the grid experiences is what we are looking for. We are self-contained and have 7 to 10-day ability to be off the grid. It is such a charge to fall out the front door and be in nature with no one close by and head out hiking and appreciating all that is around us. Life is good and life is all that you make it. We have determined it is all up to us to make our life great. We always get great service and everything always works out for us. So this blog is about telling our story and having a great time. Travel more and enjoy your life is the strong message that we have decided to make this blog about.

My first stop is a little ways off the highway near Chitna at Copper River and Liberty Falls. It's then back on the scenic Richardson Highway the rest of the way to Valdez. Some of the things we see on the way are: Mt. Billy Mitchell, Worthington Glacier, Thompson Pass, Keystone Canyon, Bridal Veil Falls and Horsetail Falls. After going over the "Top of the World" highway, we wanted to see some mountains with snow and some of the coast. So we headed south into Valdez and were rewarded with beautiful scenery. The sea and glaciers have kept the temperatures here nicely cool, unlike the interior. If we were to plan this trip again, we would have gone from Jasper BC to Prince Rupert and put the RV on the Alaska Ferry, gotten a cabin and taken it up to Vladez.
