An urban area is a location characterized by high human population density and vast human-built features in comparison to the areas surrounding it. Urban areas may be cities, towns or conurbations, but the term is not commonly extended to rural areas such as villages and hamlets.
The world's urban population in 1950 of just 746 million has soared in the decades since. In 2009, the number of people living in urban areas (3.42 billion) surpassed the number living in rural areas (3.41 billion) and since then the world has become more urban than rural. This was the first time that the majority of the world's population lived in a city. In 2014 there were 7.25 billion people living on the planet, of which the global urban population comprised 3.9 billion. The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs at that time predicted the urban population would grow to 6.4 billion by 2050, with 37% of that growth to come from three countries: China, India and Nigeria.
Space is the boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events have relative position and direction. Physical space is often conceived in three linear dimensions, although modern physicists usually consider it, with time, to be part of a boundless four-dimensional continuum known as spacetime. The concept of space is considered to be of fundamental importance to an understanding of the physical universe. However, disagreement continues between philosophers over whether it is itself an entity, a relationship between entities, or part of a conceptual framework.
Urban means "related to cities." It may refer to:
Phnom Penh (/pəˈnɔːm ˈpɛn/ or /ˈnɒm ˈpɛn/;Khmer: ភ្នំពេញ, Khmer pronunciation: [pʰnum peɲ]) is the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong River, Phnom Penh has been the national capital since French colonization of Cambodia, and has grown to become the nation's center of economic and industrial activities, as well as the center of security, politics, cultural heritage, and diplomacy of Cambodia.
Once known as the "Pearl of Asia," it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina in the 1920s. Phnom Penh, along with Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, are significant global and domestic tourist destinations for Cambodia. Founded in 1434, the city is noted for its beautiful and historical architecture and attractions. There are a number of surviving French colonial buildings scattered along the grand boulevards.
Situated on the banks of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, the Phnom Penh metropolitan area is home to about 2.2 million of Cambodia's population of over 14.8 million, up from about 1.9 million in 2008.
Nick Rivera Caminero (born March 17, 1981), known by his stage name Nicky Jam, is a singer and songwriter. He is best known for the hit "El Perdón".
Nicky Jam was born in Boston, Massachusetts to a Puerto Rican father and a Dominican mother, however he later moved with his family to Barrio Obrero in Puerto Rico when he was ten years old. He has been in reggaeton since his youth. The name "Nicky Jam" was jokingly given to Caminero by a homeless man. Caminero's family was low-income and as a minor he performed illegal work in a grocery store in order to help support them, in his free time improvising in front of his workplace. One day a music executive noticed his talent and signed him, and at the age of fourteen he recorded his first album "...Distinto A Los Demás". The album was not successful, but it did gain him recognition in the music industry, and warranted the attention of some music producers such as DJ Joe, DJ Playero and DJ Chiklin.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Butcher challenges us to pursue a new urban fabric for Jacksonville: one where public art is enshrined in our development policies; where transportation planners reevaluate the primacy of the car; where innovative, sustainable design and a sense of connection are prized; and where we reconnect our minds and bodies into the landscapes that inspire and sustain us. Ali Butcher knows the built forms of our cities expose something about our values and priorities. In his talk, Redefining Space: Creativity and Sustainability in the City, Butcher first examines the shared historical narratives of Jacksonville and Vancouver, BC, and then charts where the cities’ values and growth patterns have diverged. More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it's the city's great public spaces -- from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades -- where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city's newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love -- and why it's important. I recently took Tom to visit this new playground called Urban Space Playground & Cafe in Toul Kork district of Phnom Penh. It's a nice place for kids to indulge in their play time after school. Also, I can just have a good coffee. There is a small swimming pool for children, a sandbox. Willi Dorners megahit ’Bodies in urban spaces’ kan fejre sit 10 års jubilæum i år. Efter at have været vist i 100 byer verden over, bl.a. i København under Metropolis 2011, skaber vi nu en maraton jubilæumsversion med 45 performere på en 7 km strækning tværs gennem København i et koreograferet anarki. De spektakulære, farverige kropsskulpturer fanger omgående dit blik. Under gesimsen hænger en sammenrullet mand.

"The architectural profession has struggled for over two centuries to define its potential contributions to modern culture through its primary urban vocation." This lecture considers the historical legitimacy of this claim as well as modes of engagement in the city that may make this possible in the contemporary metropolis.
This project aims to transform underutilized urban areas that have been gragmented or occupied by roadways, waterways, and utility corridors into a unified, publicly accessible green space.
Two arguments have characterised the study of later medieval town foundations. The first concerns the definition of the term town and the second concerns the extent to which towns were ‘planned’ or ‘organic’. Increasingly intricate analyses of urban form have shifted the focus towards understanding how urban space developed over time and, to a certain degree, the social implications of changes to the urban landscape. Here a new approach is furthered, which argues that rather than seeing towns as planned or as organic, that they are emergent - places become urban as social relations are played out at multiple scales. Towns are more than buildings and streets, they are social assemblages which are reiterated and transformed as the people, materials and things interact within and around them....

A lecture by Anthony White, University of Melbourne This paper concerns the work of Gino Bonichi, an Italian artist working in the late 1920s and early 1930s, who went by the name of "Scipione." Prof. White argues that the echoes of French surrealism in Scipione's paintings and drawings, which were combined with influences from other European avant-garde movements, worked to challenge normative ideas of sexuality and urban space in Rome during the fascist era. This talk examines the changing material terrain of urban struggle today. The rapid militarization of the police, the changing spatial patterns of segregation, the embeddedness of ubiquitous computing into into the surveillance architecture, and the heightened centrality of urban spaces to global flows of capital are all changing the political space of the city today. What do these changes offer for struggle? How are various tactics of struggle – strikes, blockades, marches, occupations, and so on – made more or less amenable to political struggle today? What traditional modes of struggle are becoming obsolete in the face of contemporary changes, and what new potentials are opening up? This presentation will examine these questions and suggest an outline for contemporary urban struggle.
