I can’t get tickets to a particular session – what do I do?

If a session is listed as “Stand By” – it means there are currently no tickets available. A small number of tickets may become available to purchase at around 5pm on the night before the session.  Please check the website for any releases.

If you are unable to book a ticket in advance, you can join the standby queue at the venue on the night.  Please look for the designated standby queue area located near the box office of each venue and ask staff for venue-specific details.

Once patrons are seated and the session has commenced spare seats are counted.  If there are empty seats, you will be able to purchase a ticket (cash is preferred) at normal festival prices. You must remain in the standby queue at all times to be eligible.

Admission to sessions is not guaranteed, but standby queues generally have a high success rate.

Why doesn’t MIFF use reserved seating?

MIFF has a high volume of patrons – especially at busy times! Having general admission for most sessions allows us to get audiences in quicker and screen films on time.

Some special events may utilise reserved seating, such as MIFF Opening Night Gala at The Regent Theatre.

To guarantee a good seat, please arrive early for your sessions. If you would like to have a seat reserved for you for all sessions, check out the benefits of becoming a Premium Member.

What does Unclassified 18+ mean?

To allow MIFF to screen the most up to date films from around the world the Classifications Board grants the festival special customs and censorship clearances under which it is forbidden to allow any persons under the age of 18 years to attend – this includes babies.

Classifications are sometimes updated during the festival – to check whether a film you want to see has been officially classified please check the website.
