Rapid prototyping is a group of techniques used to quickly fabricate a scale model of a physical part or assembly using three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) data. Construction of the part or assembly is usually done using 3D printing or "additive layer manufacturing" technology.
The first methods for rapid prototyping became available in the late 1980s and were used to produce models and prototype parts. Today, they are used for a wide range of applications and are used to manufacture production-quality parts in relatively small numbers if desired without the typical unfavorable short-run economics. This economy has encouraged online service bureaus. Historical surveys of RP technology start with discussions of simulacra production techniques used by 19th-century sculptors. Some modern sculptors use the progeny technology to produce exhibitions. The ability to reproduce designs from a dataset has given rise to issues of rights, as it is now possible to interpolate volumetric data from one-dimensional images.
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM), refers to various processes used to synthesize a three-dimensional object. In 3D printing, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and are produced from a 3D model or other electronic data source. A 3D printer is a type of industrial robot.
Futurologists such as Jeremy Rifkin believe that 3D printing signals the beginning of a third industrial revolution, succeeding the production line assembly that dominated manufacturing starting in the late 19th century. Using the power of the Internet, it may eventually be possible to send a blueprint of any product to any place in the world to be replicated by a 3D printer with "elemental inks" capable of being combined into any material substance of any desired form.
3D printing in the term's original sense refers to processes that sequentially deposit material onto a powder bed with inkjet printer heads. More recently, the meaning of the term has expanded to encompass a wider variety of techniques such as extrusion and sintering-based processes. Technical standards generally use the term additive manufacturing for this broader sense.

Pylos portrays the interest to develop 3D printing as a large scale construction method, moreover developed with natural, biodegradable, recyclable and locally found materials, an undeniable interest particularly in this time of economic and environmental crisis. This material can not be other than soil. The project focuses on the natural properties of soil. Earth, or Soil, as a construction material has been used since Neolithic times. The advantages of an earth - soil structure are primarily related to both the environment and economy, being secure and friendly to our environment. Soil also offers the benefits of natural insulation, fire protection, air circulation, low first cost, 100% recyclable structures, stiffness, great strength, thermal flywheel effect, low green house emission...

Similar to the ease of modeling with clay, the Subdivision Modeling tool allows anyone to quickly model seemingly complicated 3D organic forms in a digital interface at-scale. The power of the Vectorworks platform allows for easy export to fabrication-ready file formats including .STL, .STEP, and many more. Learn how to send your concepts and creations, same day, to a myriad of rapid prototyping and production processes including: additive 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC subtractive methods. This session is designed to introduce you to the concept of subdivision modeling, and the options available to bring...
How It's Made: 3D Metal Printing (Courtesy of Ex One) With steel 3D printing, your part is created by binding together layers of steel powder. Specifically, after a layer of steel powder is spread across the base of a “build box”, a special print head moves back and forth over the layer, and deposits binding agent at specific points, as directed by a computer and your design file. Once the layer is finished and it has been dried via powerful overhead heaters, a new layer of powder is spread, and the process begins again. In this way, layer by layer, from the bottom up, your part is created. Once the printing is done, the build box is placed in a curing oven and your part is sintered. The extra powder that was not bound, and is not part of your design, is then removed. At this point, your...

The goal of this presentation is to familiarize dentists with the steps necessary for in office dental implant surgical fabrication. As technology moves forward so should we in Dentistry. Recent developments in 3D printing technology, software development and computing power have brought in office surgical guide fabrication within the reach of all dentists. No longer is this technology to be used on select cases because of the cost and complexity but it can now fit into the budget of every implant case. 3D fabrication now sits on the desktop and can eliminate many manual processes we now do in dentistry. By adopting these methods we can treat our patients more efficiently thus reducing chairtime, surgical trauma and cost to the patient and the practice. Dr. Ferguson has been involved in t...
