Falstaff
Sir John Falstaff is a fictional character who appears in three plays by William Shakespeare. In the two Henry IV plays, he is a companion to Prince Hal, the future King Henry V. In The Merry Wives of Windsor, he is the buffoonish suitor of two married women.
Though primarily a comic figure, Falstaff still embodies a kind of depth common to Shakespeare's major characters. A fat, vain, boastful, and cowardly knight, he spends most of his time drinking at the Boar's Head Inn with petty criminals, living on stolen or borrowed money. Falstaff leads the apparently wayward Prince Hal into trouble, and is ultimately repudiated after Hal becomes king.
In Act II, Scene III of Henry V, his death is described by Mistress Quickly in terms that reference Plato's description of the death of Socrates.
Falstaff has since appeared in other media, notably in operas by Giuseppe Verdi, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Otto Nicolai. The operas focus on his role in The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Orson Welles & Jeanne Moreau interview on Falstaff: Chimes at Midnight (Arena - The Orson Welles Story). The film was based on the play "Five Kings". It was written by Orson Welles and condensed William Shakespeare's "Henry IV, V, VI" and "Richard III" into one show. He produced the show in New York in 1939 but the opening night, during which Part 1 was performed, was a disaster and Part 2 was never put on. He revamped the show and revisited it in 1960. Again, it was not successful. However, this later production was used as the basis for the movie. Orson Welles' favorite of his films.

Falstaff (Italian pronunciation: [ˈfalstaf]) is an opera in three acts by the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901). The libretto was adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV, parts 1 and 2. The work premiered on 9 February 1893 at La Scala, Milan. Verdi wrote Falstaff, which was the last of his 28 operas, as he was approaching the age of 80. It was his second comedy, and his third work based on a Shakespeare play, following Macbeth and Otello. After the initial performances in Italy, other European countries and the US, the work was neglected until the conductor Arturo Toscanini insisted on its revival at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in New York from the late 1890s into the next century. Some felt that the piece suffered from a lack of the full-blooded melodies of the best of Verdi's previous operas, a view strongly contradicted by Toscanini. Conductors of the generation after Toscanini to champion the work included Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Leonard Bernstein. The work is now part of the regular operatic repertory.
Verdi made numerous changes to the music after the first performance, and editors have found difficulty in agreeing on a definitive score. The work was first recorded in 1932 and has subsequently received many studio and live recordings. Ha vinto il Premio del ventesimo anniversario e il Grand Prix tecnico al 19º Festival di Cannes.
TRAMA

L'azione si svolge in Inghilterra durante il regno di Enrico IV, prima metà del XV secolo. Il trono del re è minacciato dal conte di Northumberland, da suo figlio Henry Percy, detto "Hotspur" (sprone ardente), dal conte di Worcester e da altri nobili che sostengono il legittimo erede alla corona.
Il principe Hal, invece di condividere le preoccupazioni del padre Enrico IV, è dedito a una spensierata vita di baldorie nelle taverne di Londra. Suo compagno e maestro di gozzoviglie è il vecchio sir John Falstaff. Assieme ai degni compagni Nym, Bardolfo e Poins, Falstaff convince Hal a partecipare a una rapina ai danni di un gruppo di pellegrini. Dopo aver derubato i malcapitati viaggiatori, Enrico e Poins, travestiti, derubano a loro volta Falstaff. Nella taverna di madama Quickly il principe si diverte a sentire le smargiassate di Falstaff, gran bugiardo e gran bevitore, poi lo sbugiarda tra le risate dell'allegra banda. Nei castelli dell'antica feudalità e nei palazzi del re si sta intanto preparando la guerra. Enrico IV rimprovera il figlio per la sua disonorevole condotta ed esalta con ammirazione il giovane e coraggioso avversario Hotspur. Hal promette di ravvedersi.
Si reclutano gli uomini per la guerra e Falstaff, assieme al vecchio amico mastro Shallow, raggruppa una scalcinata compagnia di miserabili combattenti. Durante la battaglia di Shrewsbury, Hal affronta il rivale Hotspur e dopo un nobile combattimento lo uccide. Falstaff si impossessa del cadavere e si vanta con spavalderia buffonesca di aver abbattuto il prode cavaliere. Enrico IV è vittorioso sui nobili ribelli che vengono giustiziati. Poi ammalato, si ritira nel castello di Windsor.
Falstaff tenta di ricondurre il principe sulla solita via di stravizi, ma Hal si sente ormai destinato a reggere il regno e vuole dimenticare il suo scapestrato passato. Falstaff (Campanadas a medianoche) è un film del 1965 scritto, diretto e interpretato da Orson Welles tratto da Enrico IV, Enrico V, Le allegre comari di Windsor e Riccardo II di William Shakespeare.
Ha vinto il Premio del ventesimo anniversario e il Grand Prix tecnico al 19º Festival di Cannes.
TRAMA

L'azione si svolge in Inghilterra durante il regno di Enrico IV, prima metà del XV secolo. Il trono del re è minacciato dal conte di Northumberland, da suo figlio Henry Percy, detto "Hotspur" (sprone ardente), dal conte di Worcester e da altri nobili che sostengono il legittimo erede alla corona.
Il principe Hal, invece di condividere le preoccupazioni del padre Enrico IV, è dedito a una spensierata vita di baldorie nelle taverne di Londra. Suo compagno e maestro di gozzoviglie è il vecchio sir John Falstaff. Assieme ai degni compagni Nym, Bardolfo e Poins, Falstaff convince Hal a partecipare a una rapina ai danni di un gruppo di pellegrini. Dopo aver derubato i malcapitati viaggiatori, Enrico e Poins, travestiti, derubano a loro volta Falstaff. Nella taverna di madama Quickly il principe si diverte a sentire le smargiassate di Falstaff, gran bugiardo e gran bevitore, poi lo sbugiarda tra le risate dell'allegra banda. Nei castelli dell'antica feudalità e nei palazzi del re si sta intanto preparando la guerra. Enrico IV rimprovera il figlio per la sua disonorevole condotta ed esalta con ammirazione il giovane e coraggioso avversario Hotspur. Hal promette di ravvedersi.
Si reclutano gli uomini per la guerra e Falstaff, assieme al vecchio amico mastro Shallow, raggruppa una scalcinata compagnia di miserabili combattenti. Durante la battaglia di Shrewsbury, Hal affronta il rivale Hotspur e dopo un nobile combattimento lo uccide. Falstaff si impossessa del cadavere e si vanta con spavalderia buffonesca di aver abbattuto il prode cavaliere. Enrico IV è vittorioso sui nobili ribelli che vengono giustiziati. Poi ammalato, si ritira nel castello di Windsor.
Falstaff tenta di ricondurre il principe sulla solita via di stravizi, ma Hal si sente ormai destinato a reggere il regno e vuole dimenticare il suo scapestrato passato. Some felt that the piece suffered from a lack of the full-blooded melodies of the best of Verdi's previous operas, a view strongly contradicted by Toscanini. Conductors of the generation after Toscanini to champion the work included Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Leonard Bernstein. The work is now part of the regular operatic repertory.
Verdi made numerous changes to the music after the first performance, and editors have found difficulty in agreeing on a definitive score. The work was first recorded in 1932 and has subsequently received many studio and live recordings. L'azione si svolge in Inghilterra durante il regno di Enrico IV, prima metà del XV secolo. Il trono del re è minacciato dal conte di Northumberland, da suo figlio Henry Percy, detto "Hotspur" (sprone ardente), dal conte di Worcester e da altri nobili che sostengono il legittimo erede alla corona.
Il principe Hal, invece di condividere le preoccupazioni del padre Enrico IV, è dedito a una spensierata vita di baldorie nelle taverne di Londra. Suo compagno e maestro di gozzoviglie è il vecchio sir John Falstaff. Assieme ai degni compagni Nym, Bardolfo e Poins, Falstaff convince Hal a partecipare a una rapina ai danni di un gruppo di pellegrini. Dopo aver derubato i malcapitati viaggiatori, Enrico e Poins, travestiti, derubano a loro volta Falstaff. Nella taverna di madama Quickly il principe si diverte a sentire le smargiassate di Falstaff, gran bugiardo e gran bevitore, poi lo sbugiarda tra le risate dell'allegra banda. Nei castelli dell'antica feudalità e nei palazzi del re si sta intanto preparando la guerra. Enrico IV rimprovera il figlio per la sua disonorevole condotta ed esalta con ammirazione il giovane e coraggioso avversario Hotspur. Hal promette di ravvedersi.
Si reclutano gli uomini per la guerra e Falstaff, assieme al vecchio amico mastro Shallow, raggruppa una scalcinata compagnia di miserabili combattenti. Durante la battaglia di Shrewsbury, Hal affronta il rivale Hotspur e dopo un nobile combattimento lo uccide. Falstaff si impossessa del cadavere e si vanta con spavalderia buffonesca di aver abbattuto il prode cavaliere. Enrico IV è vittorioso sui nobili ribelli che vengono giustiziati. Poi ammalato, si ritira nel castello di Windsor.
Falstaff tenta di ricondurre il principe sulla solita via di stravizi, ma Hal si sente ormai destinato a reggere il regno e vuole dimenticare il suo scapestrato passato. A Windsor assiste il padre morente e si pone sul capo la corona del re. Il sovrano rimprovera il figlio per quel gesto di eccessiva brama di potere, ma infine si convince che Hal potrà degnamente sostituirlo e anzi essere un monarca ben più grande di lui.
Durante l'incoronazione di Enrico V, Falstaff cerca invano di avvicinare il suo antico amico, ma il re lo scaccia intimandogli di cambiare vita e di stare lontano dalla sua persona. Qualche tempo dopo Falstaff muore, come si apprende dal racconto di Madama Quickly.

Ha vinto il Premio del ventesimo anniversario e il Grand Prix tecnico al 19º Festival di Cannes.
TRAMA

Falstaff is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. The libretto was adapted by Arrigo Boito from Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV, parts 1 and 2. The work, described by its creators as a commedia lirica, premiered on 9 February 1893 at La Scala, Milan. Falstaff, written when Verdi was approaching the age of eighty, was the last of his twenty-eight operas, and was only his second comedy. It was his third work based on a Shakespeare play, following Macbeth and Otello.
Although the prospect of a new opera from Verdi aroused immense interest in Italy and round the world, the opera did not prove to be as popular as earlier works in the composer's canon. After the initial performances in Italy, other European countries and the US the work was neglected until the conductor Arturo Toscanini insisted on its revival at La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Some felt that the piece suffered from a lack of the full-blooded melodies of the best of Verdi's previous operas, a view strongly contradicted by Toscanini. Conductors of the generation after Toscanini to champion the work included Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti and Leonard Bernstein. The work is now part of the regular operatic repertory.
Verdi made numerous changes to the music after the first performance and editors have found difficulty in agreeing on a definitive score. The work was first recorded in 1932 and has received many studio recordings and live tapings subsequently. Among those most closely associated with the title since its creator, Victor Maurel, have been Mariano Stabile, Giuseppe Valdengo, Tito Gobbi, Geraint Evans and Bryn Terfel.
