Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.
Theravada Buddhism is the religion of about 70% of the population of Sri Lanka. The island has been a center of Buddhist scholarship and learning since the introduction of Buddhism in the third century BCE producing eminent scholars such as Buddhaghosa and preserving the vast Pāli Canon. Throughout most of its history, Sinhalese kings have played a major role in the maintenance and revival of the Buddhist institutions of the island. During the 19th century, a modern Buddhist revival took place on the island which promoted Buddhist education and learning. There are around 6,000 Buddhist monasteries on Sri Lanka with approximately 15,000 monks.
According to traditional Sri Lankan chronicles such as the Dipavamsa, Buddhism was introduced into Sri Lanka in the third century BCE after the Third Buddhist council by Mahinda Bhikkhu, son of Emperor Ashoka, during the reign of Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura. During this time, a sapling of the Bodhi Tree was brought to Sri Lanka and the first monasteries and Buddhist monuments were established. Among these, the Isurumuniya and the Vessagiri remain important centers of worship. He is also credited with the construction of the Pathamaka cetiya, the Jambukola vihāra and the Hatthālhaka vihāra and the refectory. The Pali Canon, having previously been preserved as an oral tradition, was first committed to writing in Sri Lanka around 30 BCE.
Lanka /ˈlæŋkə/ (Sanskrit lankā "island") is the name given in Hindu mythology to the island fortress capital of the legendary demon king Ravana in the epics of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The fortress was situated on a plateau between three mountain peaks known as the Trikuta Mountains. The ancient city of Lankapura is thought to have been burnt down by Hanuman. After its king, Ravana, was killed by Rama with the help of his brother Vibhishana, the latter was crowned king of Lankapura. The mythological site of Lankā is identified with Sri Lanka. His descendants were said to still rule the kingdom during the period of the Pandavas. According to the Mahabharata, the Pandava Sahadeva visited this kingdom during his southern military campaign for the rajasuya of Yudhishthira.

For my forth country of the year, I flew over to Sri Lanka, starting in the capital, Colombo. After a day on the road, I found myself in the stunning surroundings of Dambulla, where I wasted no time in trekking the Sri Lankan jungle. We then spent some time in Sigiriya, relaxing in the Jetwing hotel and seeing elephants on safari! After another long journey up to the North of the country, we spent a week on the beaches of Trincomalee, where we saw dolphins, whales and I indulged in a spot of jetskiing. But before going home, I had to experience one of the most famous Sri Lankan delicacies, it's tea, in Kandy. License Video: http://dissolve.com/products?media_type=video&producer;=Pete+R&sort;_by_date=true I spent 2 weeks in Sri Lanka starting from Colombo, Habarana, Kandy, Ella, Udawalawe national park, Tangalle, and ended in Mirissa and I have experienced so many things in that 2 weeks from going on an elephant safari to witnessing the world largest animal, the blue whale off the coast of Mirissa. Sri Lanka was never on my list of places I want to visit but I decided to give it a go and went there anyway and the country turned out to be among the best country I've been to. The wildlife there is unbelievable, the beaches are mostly untouched, the Sigiriya is definitely worth a hike, and the best of all, the people were extremely friendly toward travelers. 6 Ways You Can Give to Nepal Earthquake Relief http://time.com/3836242/nepal-earthquake-donations-disaster-relief/ ========= Justin and I managed to squeeze in several hikes during our week-long stay in Nepal in December of 2015. Despite the winter season being in full swing (and we are folks from a tropical country who never experience this kind of weather back at home!) we still spent majority of our time outdoors. The Nagarkot Panoramic Hike (2 hours) took us in and out of villages surrounding Nagarkot, a 2000 MASL hilltown 1-1/2 hours away from Kathmandu. As the activity suggests, the hike was a leisurely walk along the Nagarkot ridge with open views of the Langtang Range, Manaslu, Dorje Lhakpa and the Central Nepal / Himalayan Range. We got info on this hike from Kyarol Dhoju of P...

Amongst the other few researches, the commitment of Venerable Mookalangamuwe Pannāyananda Thero in disclosing the subject matters such as 'The real history of Heladeepa (Sri Lanka)' and 'The Buddha was born in Heladeepa' is very remarkable. Venerable Mookalangamuwe Pannāyananda Thero is an independent researcher who is not influenced by any traditional school of thoughts & any such authorities, he strongly believes in his own researches -- visiting the field and reading the inscriptions and his analytical approaches to the subject matter done through the voluminous texts written in relation with the history in Sri Lanka, folk arts, cultural aspects etc. Without being another blind follower of the history taught by the British and others who were driven by the Indian influence, Venerable ...
The pre-history of Sri Lanka goes back 125,000 years and possibly even as far back as 500,000 years. The era spans the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and early Iron Ages. Among the Paleolithic human settlements discovered in Sri Lanka, Pahiyangala (named after the Chinese traveller monk Faxian), which dates back to 37,000 BP, Batadombalena (28,500 BP) and Belilena (12,000 BP) are the most important. In these caves, archaeologists have found the remains of anatomically modern humans which they have named Balangoda Man, and other evidence suggesting that they may have engaged in agriculture and kept domestic dogs for driving game. One of the first written references to the island is found in the Indian epic Ramayana, which provides details of a kingdom named Lanka that was created by the divine s...
