Sal Masekela was not an heir apparent to become the voice and face of surfing or action sports. Far from it. He discovered surfing after moving from Staten Island, New York to Carlsbad, California as a teenager. One day, after hopping on a surfboard at Tamarack State Beach, he fell in love. And from that day, he tossed aside preconceived notions about who belongs where, what boundaries and stereotypes might exist in action sports, and he pursued his new passion with reckless abandon. No matter that kids at his school told him black people couldn’t swim.

“I long for a time when I don’t have to be asked the question, ‘What’s it like to be a black surfer?’ Because I’ve never thought of myself as a black surfer.”
In this interview, Sal discussed his relationship with his father, Hugh Masekela, as well as music and emceeing, but the way he discussed race and surfing was exceptional. He said things that he has clearly thought about at length. Probably daily. They needed to be said. And, more importantly, they need to be heard.
Sal was not an heir apparent become the voice and face of surfing or action sports. Far from it. He discovered surfing after moving from Brooklyn, NY to Carlsbad, CA as a teenager. One day, after hopping on a surfboard at Tamarack State Beach, he fell in love. And from that day, he tossed aside preconceived notions about who belongs where, what boundaries and stereotypes might exist in action sports, and he pursued his new passion with reckless abandon. No matter that kids at his school told him black people couldn’t swim.

Sal Masekela
Selema Mabena "Sal" Masekela (born August 28, 1971) is an American television host, sports commentator, actor, and singer.
Life and career
Sal is the son of the South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela, and a Haitian mother. Sal is also the older half-brother of Survivor: Cook Islands contestant Nathan Gonzalez. He was raised in Staten Island, New York and Carlsbad, California, where he attended Carlsbad High School. Sal is the co-founder of Berkela Motion Pictures with Jason Bergh.
His career began as the receptionist/intern at Transworld Publications in 1992, home of TW Snow, TW Skateboarding and TW Surf magazines. An avid surfer, skateboarder and snowboarder, he is described by some as the face and voice of action sports. He served as an NBA sideline reporter for ESPN during the 2003-2004 season. Sal Masekela was co-host of The Daily 10, a countdown of the day's "top 10" entertainment stories, on the E! network until it was cancelled on Sept 27, 2010 (last show Oct 1, 2010). He was also host of both the X Games and Winter X Games on ESPN for 13 years but left in 2012 to work for NBC and NBC Sports Network through a contract with Red Bull Media House. He appears in the "Green" episode of Yo Gabba Gabba singing the song "Hello World" which aired on Nick Jr. on April 22, 2009.

Hugh Masekela
Hugh Ramopolo Masekela (born 4 April 1939) is a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer, and singer. He is the father of American television host Sal Masekela.
Early life
Masekela was born in Kwa-Guqa Township, Witbank, South Africa. He began singing and playing piano as a child. At the age of 14, after seeing the film Young Man with a Horn (in which Kirk Douglas plays a character modelled on American jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke), Masekela took up playing the trumpet. His first trumpet was given to him by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-apartheid chaplain at St. Peter's Secondary School.
Huddleston asked the leader of the then Johannesburg "Native" Municipal Brass Band, Uncle Sauda, to teach Masekela the rudiments of trumpet playing. Masekela quickly mastered the instrument. Soon, some of his schoolmates also became interested in playing instruments, leading to the formation of the Huddleston Jazz Band, South Africa's first youth orchestra. By 1956, after leading other ensembles, Masekela joined Alfred Herbert's African Jazz Revue.

Snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, he does it all! Sports fanatic and reporter Sal Masekela has been given his own show and we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on the open for it. This project was a blast to work on and started with having Sal come into the studio to stand under a ton of lights and sweat like an eskimo in the mid west. The shoot consisted of taking over 1000 stills of Sal either running, jumping, flying or just making hilariously funny faces. The open took three weeks to complete including concept design, 3D environments, comping, shooting, and sound design. We are really excited about how it turned out and hope that you like it as well. Shaka!

On June 25, 2011, Life Rolls On teamed up with SHOE CITY to host its second annual They Will Skate Again adaptive skating program at the Venice Skate Park. No matter that kids at his school told him black people couldn’t swim.

Whoever invented surfing knew that an adrenaline rush straight into your pre-frontal cortex was just what the doctor ordered for a rainy day. What they didn't know is that action sports also has the potential to transform people, lives, and communities. "Leti's Story", a short documentary film, explores a teenager whose life has been enriched and enabled through her involvement with Stoked Mentoring, an action sports mentoring program aimed at creating successful, confident teens. Along her journey, she rubs elbows with action sports celebs Tony Hawk and Sal Masekela while soaking in the action at X Games 15.

Sal Masekela was not an heir apparent to become the voice and face of surfing or action sports. Far from it. He discovered surfing after moving from Staten Island, New York to Carlsbad, California as a teenager. One day, after hopping on a surfboard at Tamarack State Beach, he fell in love. And from that day, he tossed aside preconceived notions about who belongs where, what boundaries and stereotypes might exist in action sports, and he pursued his new passion with reckless abandon. Snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding, he does it all! Sports fanatic and reporter Sal Masekela has been given his own show and we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work on the open for it. This project was a blast to work on and started with having Sal come into the studio to stand under a ton of lights and sweat like an eskimo in the mid west. The shoot consisted of taking over 1000 stills of Sal either running, jumping, flying or just making hilariously funny faces. The open took three weeks to complete including concept design, 3D environments, comping, shooting, and sound design. We are really excited about how it turned out and hope that you like it as well. This project was a blast to work on and started with having Sal come into the studio to stand under a ton of lights and sweat like an eskimo in the mid west. The shoot consisted of taking over 1000 stills of Sal either running, jumping, flying or just making hilariously funny faces. The open took three weeks to complete including concept design, 3D environments, comping, shooting, and sound design. We are really excited about how it turned out and hope that you like it as well. Shaka!

What they didn't know is that action sports also has the potential to transform people, lives, and communities. Plus Lon and Farrell review Richard Gere as a corrupt billionaire in "Arbitrage," Greta Gerwig as a young woman with a confusing love life in "Lola Versus" and artist Olivia Thirlby mixing up John Krasinski's marriage in "Nobody Walks." And Lon discusses his newfound willingness to watch terrible, awful movies (like Val Kilmer's "The Traveler") simply because they are streaming instantly on Netflix.

A Chihuahua-mix puppy was found in a Las Vegas airport bathroom with a handwritten note detailing that the dog's owner was fleeing from domestic violence and had run out of options, according to CBS News. The dog was found last weekend in the airport bathroom with an anonymous note that read,"My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn't afford me to get on the flight." ...
