The state of Vermont delivered some good news to us! Their legislature passed a bill legalizing recreational marijuana. Although their Republican Governor is a self-proclaimed "marijuana skeptic" and may veto it, the passage of the bill is a victory in and of itself seeing that it marks the first time recreational marijuana has passed legislatively. Date: Wednesday, April 24th, 2013 Time: 4:00 pm to 6:00pm Location: Given E131, UVM We hear a lot in the news today about waiting for growth to occur in the economy. Meanwhile, all of us are increasingly concerned about job security and availability, government spending and taxation, as well as, rates of savings and investment. As we all wait patiently for economic growth, we must think critically about our current systems, focusing on what works and what should be reconfigured. In thinking critically, we must ask ourselves, "Is economic growth good for people and the environment?" The Financing the New Economy track will kick off with a debate between neoclassical and ecological economic schools of thought. The neoclassical team, Professors Arthur Woolf and Bill Gibson, will debate the...
History [edit]Partridge and his academy The university was founded in 1819 at Norwich by military educator and former superintendent of West Point, Captain Alden B. Partridge. Captain Partridge believed in the "American System of Education," a traditional liberal arts curriculum with instruction in civil engineering and military science. After leaving West Point because of congressional disapproval of his system, he returned to his native state of Vermont to create the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy. Captain Partridge, in founding his academy, rebelled against the reforms of Sylvanus Thayer to prevent the rise of what he saw as the greatest threat to the security of the young republic: a professional officer class. He believed that a well-trained militia was an urgent ...

Dale Ellen Azaria Gund Graduate Student and Masters Candidate in Natural Resources, RSENR Vermont 2011 What is the ecology of transportation systems? How does the nature of road configuration across a landscape affect things like traffic congestion, land use, human health, and air quality? Over recent years, transportation systems have been recognized as broader contexts for communities. Take streets, for example. Instead of just focusing on how efficiently they can serve the automobile to get from place A to place B, streets and their design across the natural & built environment can also serve as public spaces where crucial social & economic exchanges take place. In this video, Dale Azaria brings us into the complex world of transportation issues. Using Chittenden Country, Vermont ...

Judging paradigms, Andrej Schulcz, Slovak Debate Association The paper will apply the concept of paradigms to the current practice of judging debates, with a special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe. In general terms, paradigms are established ways of thinking about or dealing with certain situations. Paradigms of judging are an important, yet neglected, aspect of debate programs, because they have a significant impact on what debaters and coaches make of debating. Typically debate programs either do not have judging training developed to a level at which they would deal with conceptual issues, or they work within a single paradigm without being able to critically examine their approach to debating and compare it with the approaches of other debate programs. The concept of paradigm...

Jon Erickson of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics | Keynote Address for UVM's annual Sustainable Business class | Summer 2012 Given the life and times of the 21st century, the desire for economic accounting reform is gaining traction. How do we measure the well-being and progress of our citizens? What is GDP, and what is it not? In Vermont there is an exciting movement towards effecting the Genuine Progress Indicator which would help the state more towards qualitative improvement for total well-being rather than just quantitative growth of the economy. Learn about the history of measures of economic aggregates like GDP and wrestle with the question: is the growth model broken and if so, what will take its place? What are our economic objectives and does it recognize externalitie...

Vermont Business Loans Vermont Small Business Owners employ 59% of the private workforce and helped the state economy grow faster than the national average. With over 10,000 business loans issued under $100,000 by state lending institutions, Vermont is a perfect environment for our small business funding. Since the 2008 banking crisis larger banks have scrambled to find ways to provide funding to businesses while lowering costs and minimizing risks.Unfortunately for most small businesses the cost of providing a $1,000,000 loan and the cost of providing a $100,000 are the same with less profit for bank . Many banks refuse to lend to certain industries like restaurants.Inadequate income statements and sparse tax information make accessing a small business's creditworthiness difficult for...

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter as Joe approaches both sides of his passion for food and mealtime with equal care, craft, and attention. Joe and his family work and live at Screamin’ Ridge Farm in the hills just north of Vermont’s beautiful capital city of Montpelier. Out of three big double-walled greenhouses and a few acres of tillable soil they grow pristine organic vegetables year-round. They also produce a growing selection of flavorfully crafted lightly prepared foods, like soups, pesto, salsa, and tomato sauce. Tom Stearns began gardening at an early age at his family home in CT. Prior to completing a degree in Sustainable Agriculture from Prescott College in AZ, he began saving seeds. A hobby was born in 1996 in Vermont, when Tom began sharing these seeds with others through a small seed flyer. High Mowing Organic Seeds has since expanded into one of the leading organic seed companies in the U.S., supplying both home gardeners and commercial growers. Tom’s vision has always been to create a company that would help support the re-building of healthy food systems, first in Vermont, followed by the rest of the U.S. He has also taught numerous workshops since 1996 on many topics such as ag. education, economics, community supported agriculture, genetic engineering, plant breeding, local food system...
A preliminary investigation of dairy farms and cheese production-- A major confluence of communities in these New England communities revolves around supporting the local economy through supporting local cheese production. Although consumers are often disconnected from the makers of the items purchased, conversing with the artisans in their industrial kitchens allowed me to connect their homemade cheese with the faces, hands and narratives of the producers. Developing a relationship with the land by mapping dairy farms, I learned how cheese production is site-specific. Making cheese usually requires aging, an agent served to ripen and enhance flavors over time. Beginning in 1949, Congress mandated that all milk and dairy products be pasteurized, unless the cheese is aged over sixty days. ...

Vermont is adopting a plan to implement a Canadian-style single-payer universal health care system over the next several years. If the plan is successful, it could be for the United States what Saskatchewan was for Canada in the 1960's: a pioneer, guiding the rest of the country to the promised land of access to quality health care for all. WINOOSKI, Vt. (AP) -- Gov. Peter Shumlin says the state is temporarily shutting down the Vermont Health Connect website so it can be fixed before the start of the next enrollment period in November. Shumlin and other state officials said at a Tuesday news conference at the headquarters of Vermont Health Connect that people who use the website will be able to manage their health insurance by telephone for the next two months. The governor and interim Human Services Secretary Harry Chen say the oversight of Vermont Health Connect will now be managed by Lawrence Miller, director of health care reform. Miller said now is a good time to take down the website because its use is relatively low. Vermont Health Connect has been plagued by problems since it went online Oct. 1.
131 miles, 6 major climbs & 12,000* feet of elevation gain! I went out on a beautiful day, with temps in the 80's. I started around 10:30am and finished around 8 hours later. Elizabeth followed me along in the truck and captured the footage that you see here. The 6 gaps are, Brandon Gap, Middlebury Gap, Lincoln Gap (24% grade), Appalachian Gap, Roxbury Gap & the Rochester Gap. Gain is about *12,000 feet depends on who you talk to, some say 14,000 while others claim 11,500, the truth is that you will be doing lots of climbing with some steep grades along the way. Small but beautiful: Do you know where Vermont's name comes from? Can you name the 2 U.S. presidents born in this state? And would you know the state's - probably - most famous culinary treat? Find out the answer to all these questions in our newest state video with Stephanie Lyons from the Economic/Political Section of the U.S. Embassy.
The disappearance of Vermont teenager Brianna Maitland is discussed.
In the background, there's a noise.
All the feet marking time in a straight line.
And you can't turn back cause you're better off.
You gotta maintain your stance.
In the background, there's a voice
Singing softly, but surely to break you down.
That no matter what they say, what you're wearing still matters.
An unmotivated crowd; blood, sweat, and tears poured into staying safelike tenth-grade apprehension - Oh!
And my navy blue isn't black enough, so I'll keep my head down.
Was it innovation or formal?
You dance the same dance as everyone.
Smash your equipment in a rage; it's all the rage and a guaranteed way to Heaven.
Hallelujah! we're all saved!
and though Heather said i should write it down,
Well, I will be forgotten.
But the eternal face for prom queen is here to stay.
Gesticulate, try to make a move and break free.
And you thought conformity was so passe`.
But no matter what they tell you, everything is high school.
And it's ob-la-di-bla-da and you walk away.
You can try to make a change.
More like try to shift in a straight jacket.
No matter what they say ou walk away, cause you dance the same dance.
Just walk away.
