Claire Denis
Claire Denis (French: [dəni]; born 21 April 1946) is a French film director and writer. Her work has dealt with themes of colonial and post-colonial West Africa, as well as issues in modern France.
Early life
Denis was born in Paris, France to French natives, and raised in colonial French Africa: Burkina Faso, Somalia, Senegal and Cameroon, where her father was a civil servant. Her childhood spent living in West Africa with her parents and her younger sister would color her perspectives on certain political issues. It has been a strong influence on her films, which have dealt with themes of colonialism and post-colonialism in Africa. Her father moved with the family every two years because he wanted the children to learn about geography. Growing up in West Africa, Denis used to watch the old and damaged copies of war films sent from the United States. As an adolescent she loved to read. Completing the required material while in school, at night she would sneak her mother's detective stories to read. When Denis was 14 years old, she moved with her mother and sister to a Parisian suburb in France, a country that she hardly knew at all. Her parents wanted their children to finish their education in France.

Murder in Pacot
Murder in Pacot (French: Meurtre à Pacot, German: Mord in Haiti) is feature film by Haitian film director Raoul Peck. The film stars Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin, Alex Descas, Thibault Vinçon, and Lovely Kermonde Fifi and is a continuation of the theme Peck featured in his last documentary, Assistance Mortelle (Fatal Assistance), on international aid to Haiti following the earthquake of 12 January 2010 which opened at New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center in February 2014. The lead producers of the joint Haitan, French and Norwegian production were Peck and Remi Grellety.
The story, a traditional stranger-comes-to-town plot line examining how the earthquake upended Haiti's strongly divided class system, is loosely inspired by the 1968 mystery Teorema by Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini. In that screenplay, which Pasolini adapted from his own novel, a mysterious stranger, played by Terence Stamp, intrudes an Italian family and seduces every member of the household before leaving as suddenly and mysterious as he came.

Set in the striking and varied landscapes of contemporary Spain (both urban and otherwise), shot by acclaimed cinematography Christopher Doyle, and featuring music by cult Japanese psychedelic metal band Boris, The Limits of Control is the story of a mysterious loner (played by Isaach De Bankolé) whose activities remain meticulously outside the law. He is in the process of completing a job, yet he trusts no one, and his objectives remain a mystery until the very end of the film. His journey, paradoxically both intently focused and dreamlike, takes him not only across Spain but also through his own consciousness.
In addition to De Bankolé, The Limits of Control also features several other actors with whom Jim Jarmusch has previously worked, including Alex Descas, John Hurt, Youki Kudoh, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton; and actors new to his films, including Hiam Abbass, Gael García Bernal, Paz De La Huerta, Jean-François Stévenin, and Luis Tosar.

- Depuis le début des années 2000, la Guadeloupe a été le théâtre de quelques rares tournages. Pour la plupart des films d’actions ou des comédies. Pour la quasi-majorité d’entre-eux des fiascos aussi. On pense notamment à Speed 2 : Cap sur le danger ou à Antilles sur Seine, avec Pascal Légitimus.
Mais dans le lot, Nèg Maron, l’œuvre de Jean-Claude Flamand Barny, mérite que l’on appuie sur le bouton pause. Pour prendre le poul d'une époque.
Sorti en 2005, ce film qui raconte les aventures de deux amis d’enfance à la dérive dans les rues de Pointe-à-Pitre a été plutôt bien reçu par les critiques à l’époque de sa sortie. Les revues spécialisées comme les mass média saluent « un documentaire qui laisse volontiers place à la fiction », comme l’écrit alors le site Africultures.com.
C’est que l’histoire où l’on suit Josua et Silex, deux amis d’enfance désœuvrés, exclus modernes aux familles explosées, est une plongée crue dans une jeunesse antillaise à l'écart de la société et de ses codes. Pour Africultures.com, c’est même "une plongée dans le ghetto antillais". Si le scénario est plutôt convenu, Nèg Maron expose au spectateur le contraste de la vitalité débordante des Antilles et la face sombre d’une pauvreté bien présente.
Par son aspect sociétal, le film de Jean-Claude Flamand Barny a même fait l’objet d’une étude de Patricia Donatien-Yssa, spécialiste de littérature et de l’art caribéens et maître de conférence à l’Université des Antilles et de la Guyane.
"La Guadeloupe qui est dépeinte dans Nèg Maron prend souvent des allures caricaturales : rixes dans la rue, foule surexcitée, bagarres enflammées ; et la population semble en parfaite contradiction avec des paysages souvent trop idylliques", théorise t-elle.
Mais pour Patricia Donatien-Yssa, "les jeunes délinquants dépeints dans Nèg Maron ne sont pas des jeunes de banlieue. Dans leur Guadeloupe natale, ce n’est ni la discrimination, ni la perte d’identité qui les a détourné d’un devenir lumineux (…) Le crime est approché de manière la plus objective possible en essayant d’établir les corrélations éventuelles entre la délinquance et les stigmates de la société coloniale : la dislocation, le déséquilibre, le chômage."
Tourné en créole, Nèg Maron est doublé en français. On y découvre ainsi de nombreuses expressions de la jeunesse guadeloupéenne. Comme la "drive", mot créole qui signifie errance, vagabondage. Un terme qui résume à lui seul la dérive sociale de Josua et Silex dans Nèg Maron.
