Punk combo Discount was formed in early 1995 by singer Alison Mosshart, guitarist Ryan Seagrist, bassist James, and drummer Bill Nesper, all junior high school students in the Vero Beach, FL, area. Despite their youth, the group began regularly gigging throughout Florida and soon self-released their debut cassette, Mom Lied to Me; a copy of the tape eventually found its way to Liquid Meat Records honcho Tim Lyman, and in 1996 the label issued the 7" EP Wonder Pulled Me Under followed by the full-length Ataxia's Alright Tonight. Split singles with Cigaretteman and JChurch preceded the 1997 release of the second Discount LP, Half-Fiction; a year later the group returned with Love, Billy, an EP of Billy Bragg covers. New bassist Todd Rockhill signed on prior to 1999's "Open Ended Aerial" single, and after relocating to Gainesville, Discount began work on its third LP, 2000's Crash Diagnostic; a message posted to the band's official website announced their subsequent tour would also be their last. Mosshart went on to form the Kills, playing under the pseudo name VV.

Berkeley, CA-area punk band Tilt were formed in the early '90s, featuring vocalist/songwriter Cinder Block (a rare female performer in the male-dominated punk-pop field), guitarist Jeffrey Bischoff (also Cinder's husband), bassist Pete Rypins, and drummer J. Vincent Camacho. The high-energy and socially aware group first released a successful demo that charted at local college station KALX for a month before recording their melodic self-titled EP in January 1992. Tilt's full-length debut came in 1993 on Lookout! Records with Play Cell; they jumped to Fat Wreck Chords for 1995's 'Til It Kills, which found Gabe Meline taking over bass duties. The band briefly broke up in 1996, but reconvened the following year, this time with Jimmy Cheetah (ex-Screw 32) on bass; Collect 'Em All appeared in 1998. Viewers Like You was released in 1999 with original bassist Rypins returning to Tilt's ranks, and national tours with No Use for a Name and One Man Army followed. The 22-song B-sides and rarities compilation Been Where? Did What? surfaced in November 2001.

J CHURCH Quetzalcoatl 1993

Prolific San Francisco punk-pop trio J Church was formed in 1991 by singer/guitarist Lance Hahn and bassist Gardner Fusuhara, longtime friends who previously teamed in Cringer. Named in honor of a local bus route, the group went through a series of drummers before and after the 1993 release of their full-length debut, Quetzalcoatl; the album was quickly followed by Camels, Spilled Corona and the Sound of Mariachi Bands, a collection of early singles. Upon completing 1994's Prophylaxis, J Church added drummer Reed Burgoyne, who made his recorded debut on the single "Ivy League College"; the continued flurry of 7"s, split singles, and compilation appearances soon yielded a second compilation, Nostalgic for Nothing. After issuing 1995's Arbor Vitae on Hahn's own Honey Bear label, J Church caused much consternation among fans by signing to Honest Don's Hardly Used Recordings label for 1996's The Drama of Alienation; Burgoyne left the lineup a year later and was replaced by A Minor Forest drummer Andee Connors. Yet another singles collection, 1998's Altamont 99, preceded the exits of Fusuhara and Connors, with bassist Jeff Bursley and ex-Jawbreaker drummer Adam Pfahler joining Hahn for 2000's One Mississippi. The round-up compilation Meaty, Beaty, Shitty Sounding appeared in 2001 and gathered together a bunch of the band's 7" singles dating back to 1993; Palestine was released a year later. A split with Storm the Tower followed in the fall of 2003 before J Church officially debuted on Gainesville's No Idea Records with Society Is a Carnivorous Flower in August 2004. By that point, Hahn was rocking out alongside guitarist David DiDonato, bassist Ben White, and drummer Chris Pfeffer. Horror of Life appeared in the spring of 2007 minus DiDonato.

Exeter, England-based post-rock trio Appliance was formed by guitarist/vocalist James Brooks, bassist Stuart Christie, and drummer David Ireland, schoolmates whose earliest music sprung from their mutual admiration of bands like Spacemen 3 and Joy Division. Upon completing their recorded debut "Weightless Conditions" for an improvisational compilation on the M.T.B. label, Christie left the group to focus on his solo project Harmony 400, with bassist Michael Parker tapped as his replacement. Honing their own contemplative, minimalist sound over the course of the EP trilogy Organised Sound, Into Your Home and Time and Space (released between July 1997 and July 1998 on the trio's own Surveillance.com label), Appliance signed to the Mute label in early 1999, soon issuing the single "Food Music"; the full-length Manual followed that fall. An EP named Six Modular Pieces was released in mid-2000. The eclectically cohesive Imperial Metric, which showcased a more diverse look into a darker post-punk period, appeared in summer 2001.

Inspired largely by Sixties psychedelia -- their name comes from a track off Love's seminal 1967 LP Forever Changes -- as well as more contemporary influences such as Wilco, My Bloody Valentine and Radiohead, the Red Telephone was comprised of singer/guitarist Matt Hutton, guitarist Sean Toohey, bassist Pat MacDonald and drummer Mark Britton. A product of Boston, the group debuted in 1998 with a self-titled LP issued on Warner Bros. Not surprisingly, Warner had no idea what to do with a left-of-center band like the Red Telephone, and the group was dropped unceremoniously by the label. The band persevered and released the Aviation EP on their own Raise Giant Frogs imprint; it sold more copies than their major label album. In early 2001, the group returned with their second full-length Cellar Songs.

Formerly known as Scared Straight, but wanting to have more fun than a straight-edge hardcore band, Ten Foot Pole converted into a powerful, aggressive punk rock band. While Scared Straight had releases on the Mystic Records label, Ten Foot Pole quickly came under the Epitaph umbrella, staying there until past the millennium.
Co-founder Dennis Jagard was born in Northridge, CA, but grew up in Simi Valley, CA. When he was eight, his parents made him take piano lessons; by the time he was ten, music was his way of life. He kept Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" in his bathroom tape player for months, listening to the same songs every day while showering. When he was 11, he struck a deal with his parents and wrote up a contract: He would be allowed to switch from piano to guitar with the understanding that he would turn the volume down when requested, and he wouldn't play the guitar when his dad was home. Jagard started gigging with his friends during junior high school, motivated by their love for heavy music and the hope that the girls would notice them if they were on-stage. As he grew older, he developed a love for street motorcycles, snowboarding, and reading, but the thrill of writing songs and seeing how music affected people shaped his career as a vocalist and guitar player.

Jagard, along with co-founder Steve Von Treetrunk (guitar), plus Scott Radinsky (vocals), and Jordan Burns (drums), gained experience at every turn as they took their new band, Scared Straight, on their first tour. They lost everything when both their car and trailer were stolen in Pittsburgh. The show went on as they continued to play on borrowed equipment. Scared Straight self-released their debut album, Swill, early in 1994. Then Burns switched bands and went with Corrosion of Conformity, so Tony Palermo joined on behind the drum kit. By September 1994, the Epitaph label had signed the band and released Rev. After the name and style conversion to Ten Foot Pole that came with Rev, the band joined with the Satanic Surfers and released a split CD in April 1995. Vocalist Scott Radinsky, having the dual talent of singing and being a pitcher for the L.A. Dodgers, left the band in 1995 to pitch balls full-time, later going on to form Pulley as well; Jagard took over his spot.

Epitaph released Unleashed in March 1997, and a few months later, Glen Vegas (bass) joined the band. Vegas, with his energetic backing vocals, originated from Canada and earlier played in Dead Surf Kiss (aka DSK) and 60 Cycle. That fall, Ten Foot Pole toured New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and the U.S. In January 1999, Epitaph released Insider, which was well received by fans. When Vegas left to explore other areas of life, Leigh Lawson (bass) became a key ingredient of the band. May 2000 found Ten Foot Pole on the Punk-O-Rama tour, providing a joyous interaction with fans. The band also covered "Love Song" by Tesla on Punk Goes Metal released in August 2000 by Fearless Records.
