Leonard Cohen - Live Beacon Theatre 2009

Leonard Cohen - Beacon Theatre
New York, NY

*Enclosed Notes*
Last Christmas, Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah was No. 1 on the UK Christmas singles chart (the song was covered by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke). While that’s mighty fine showing for the 74-year-old singer-songwriter, that has not stopped Cohen, who toured Australia in January-February, from donating US$200,000 to the victims of the country’s bushfires.

After leaving Australia, Cohen played his first American concert in 15 years at the Beacon Theatre in New York on February 19. With his voice low, Cohen sounds like a very much sweeter Tom Waits but it is his meditative delivery that makes this ideal for late-night listening.

This is what Jason Gross, in the Village Voice, reported: “Decked out in an appropriately black suit, he was almost sprightly, kneeling and buckling and shuffling and swaying to his mid- and slow-tempo songs, his gaze trained dramatically skyward and his eyes closed as he clutched the mic. Even his voice had regained its gravelly hush, sounding better than it has on his last two albums.

“And while his eerie upscale-lounge-lizard persona still gives off chills (especially on the lusty “I’m Your Man”), it’s his latter-day apocalyptic visions that carry the most resonance in these shitty post-millennial times. “Everybody Knows” now sounded less like doomy fiction and more like he was gloomily reciting present-day headlines; he particularly savored the frightening chorus of “The Future” (”It is murder”).”

In order to try and drum up business for my favorite side project "The Adult Bookstore Motel, Records & Liquor"(Located On The Side Bar) I'm posting this in hopes you'll read this and  participate at said store. I have put up tons of stuff there if you have yet to visit. Simply go to the "Shit Happens" panel (Located On The Side Bar) pick a month and see the goodies myself and others have offered. However if you prefer I can go ahead and start posting the massive Don Ho bootleg collection I have. If you've never heard "Tiny Bubbles" sung in Greek you're gonna be in for a real treat. If you wanna ignore "The Bookstore Motel" I'll start with a live Gloria Gaynor boot that will be my next post.  See Scans

200 Motels Suites - BBC Concert Orchestra 2013

200 Motels Suites - BBC Concert Orchestra
October 29, 2013
This is a recording of the BBC Radio 3
FM broadcast on 2013-11-09 @flac

From the BBC Website:
Tom Service presents the UK premiere of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels, a suite from the orchestral soundtrack to the American composer's surrealist documentary film about life on the road as a rock musician. Containing very strong language thoughout, it was banned from live performance in the UK in 1971 on grounds of obscenity, but was finally staged in London last month as part of the Rest is Noise festival, the South Bank's ongoing survey of music from the twentieth century. Tom Service is joined by author Ben Watson, who makes the case for this work as Zappa's misunderstood masterpiece.

Frank Zappa: 200 Motels

Claron McFadden, soprano
Tony Guilfoyle (Frank)
Richard Strange (Narrator, Rance)
Ian Shaw (Mark)
Brendan Reilly (Howard, Cowboy Burt)
Sophia Brous (Groupie 1, Larry the Dwarf)
Diva Zappa (Groupie 2, Lucy)
Jessica Hynes (Good Conscience)
Jay Rayner (Bad Conscience, Ginger)
Scott Thunes (Jeff)

London Voices
Southbank Sinfonia
BBC Concert Orchestra
Jurjen Hempel, conductor.

01 Introduction and Discussion with Tom Service and Ben Watson [10.30]
02 Overture [2:10]
03 Went On The Road [1:43]
04 Centerville [2:18]
05 Tuna Sandwich Suite [11:22]
06 The Restaurant Scene [4:31]
07 Touring Can Make You Crazy [2:31]
08 What's The Name Of Your Group? [10:56]
09 Can I Help You With This Dummy? [2:36]
10 The Pleated Gazelle [21:14]
11 I'm Stealing The Room [12:38]
12 Shove It Right In [8:06]
13 Penis Dimension [9:23]
14 Strictly Genteel [9:19]
15 Applause and Discussion [5.23]

Notes:
On edits - "Mother People" was removed from 01. "A Nun Suit Painted On Some Old Boxes" and "Magic Fingers" removed from end of 15.
On timings - The BBC has removed a whole 10 seconds from the performance. Those with particular delight in such matters will enjoy looking for the missing: 2 seconds from track 08, 2 seconds from track 11, 5 from track 12 and 1 second from 13.
On Recording the concert - The BBC had a Decca Tree arrangement (in classic position) and a gazillion spot mics to cover the 135 plus performers and musicians. They have mixed the "Rock Band" beautifully into the mix and likewise the choir. It was far better a mix that at the performance.
On Recording the Broadcast - External aerial/Audionote T-zero Tuner/Audionote M2 Preamp/Emu 0404 USB A/D to Reaper. recorded at 24/96 Wav and Tracked 'n' Flac'd 'n' Dithered to 16/44 in Reaper. The Aerial had been aligned to give the best R3 signal and the Tuner and Pre had been warming up for 3 weeks. No gain or other adjustments made.

The Hunter Ronson Band - BBC Live In Concert 1989

The Hunter Ronson Band - BBC Live In Concert
London, UK

Liberated Bootleg

Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson were coming back from half a decade of semi-retirement when they toured without a record contract in early 1989. But at the time of their stop at the Dominion Theatre in London on February 15, chronicled on this 73 1/2-minute, 13-track disc, they had already begun to compile the new material that would be included on their excellent Y U I ORTA album. So, the show consisted of old Hunter favorites like the U.K. Top Ten hit by his old group Mott The Hoople, "All The Way From Memphis," and his own U.K. Top 40 hit "Once Bitten Twice Shy," plus six songs that would turn up on the album, including powerful Hunter compositions like "Following In Your Footsteps" and "Big Time" (which was misidentified here as "You're Never Too Old To Hit The Big Time"—the chorus line is actually "You're never too small to hit the big time"). The Hunter/Ronson live sound previously had been displayed on the 1980 album Welcome To The Club, with which this set shared many selections, and it remained an effective combination, with Ronson playing powerful hard rock lead guitar to support Hunter, the frontman, and his plaintive, autobiographical songs. If anyone feared that the/two had lost their rock 'n' roll fervor after the lay-off, this concert dispelled that notion. It's no surprise they earned another record contract soon after.

Track List:
01. Once Bitten Twice Shy
02. How Much More Can I Take
03. Beg A Little Love
04. Following In Your Footsteps
05. Just Another Night
06. Sweet Dreamer
07. (Give Me Back My) Wings

Chicken Shack - Live BBC 1968

Back From The Dead...
Originally posted April 5, 2011

Chicken Shack - Live BBC 1968 (featuring Christine Perfect)
BBC Broadcast @192

*Original Notes*
For many, British blues band Chicken Shack are best remembered for the smouldering I’d Rather Go Blind. The song was popular enough in Malaysia in the late ’60s and early ’70s to be found on a number of pirated 7-inch vinyl singles, which were quite the rage then. However, the name (and vocalist) Christine Perfect wasn’t well known then, until she married John McVie and joined Fleetwood Mac.

Chicken Shack probably had the most success with Perfect in the lineup - she got a Melody Maker award for female vocalist for both 1969 and 1970 respectively - and, on the track, When The Train Comes Home, she gets to showcase her bluesy keyboards skills. The bonus is having blues singer and musician Duster Bennett on harmonica on Mean Old World.

Track List:
01. When The Train Comes Home
02. Love Me or Leave Me
03. Mean Old World (with Duster Bennett)
04. It’s OK With Me Baby

Lineup:
Christine Perfect - keyboards, vocals
Stan Webb - guitar
Andy Sylvester - bass
Dave Bidwell - drums

**Original Notes**
This broadcast ist also known as the "UN-concert".

The CD booklet claimed that this is the original first WLIR-FM recording from 1973.

Our currently Yojimbo version is apparently the re-broadcast from WXRT with a
different radio announcer. The overall sound quality on this boot is better than
on Yojimbo's version, also Yoijimbo's version has much more FM static
noises here and there.
