The Netherlands (i/ˈnɛðərləndz/; Dutch: Nederland [ˈneːdərˌlɑnt]) is the main "constituent country" (Dutch: land) of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is a small, densely populated country located in Western Europe with three island territories in the Caribbean. The European part of the Netherlands borders Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest, sharing maritime borders with Belgium, the United Kingdom and Germany. The largest and most important cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam. Amsterdam is the country's capital, while The Hague holds the Dutch seat of government and parliament. The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe – as large as the next three largest combined – and was the world's largest port between 1962 and 2004. The name Holland is also frequently used to informally refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands.
"Netherlands" literally means "lower countries", influenced by its low land and flat geography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding one metre above sea level. Most of the areas below sea level are man-made. Since the late 16th century, large areas (polders) have been reclaimed from the sea and lakes, amounting to nearly 17% of the country's current land mass.

Here are 10 things the Dutch do better than Americans. Dutch history is packed with significant achievements in the arts, business, and indoor plumbing, and they continue to outperform numerous countries, including the US, in a variety of areas. Here are 10 things the Dutch do better than Americans. Number 10. Happiness. According to the World Happiness Report 2013 presented to the United Nations, the Netherlands was awarded the 4th spot. The US landed in 17th place, not entirely bad but not as impressive. Number 9. Bicycling. While cycling in major US cities presents a number of challenges, in the Netherlands bikes rule the roads. It’s estimated that 70 percent of all 4-mile-and-under treks are taken on two wheels. Number 8. Wooden Shoes. Clogs have been an on-again, off-again tr...
Getting Closer, a documentary about painter Tjalf Sparnaay by Hester Hagemeijer, 2014 Full 40 minutes version in HD, English subtitled The film tells the tale of Tjalf Sparnaay’s drive to paint and be something exceptional. Paradoxically, to do this he chooses everyday items, which have never been painted in such a megarealistic fashion. In his studio we look over his shoulder to see how he works. In the Rijksmuseum he tells us how he has been inspired by 17th century Dutch art. We follow him at exhibits and openings in the Netherlands, but in New York as well, where he tells us about a can of Coca-Cola he found and his fascination with imperfection. Jan Six, Ronald Plasterk and Ralph Keuning among others share their experiences. Getting Closer brings us closer to Tjalf Sparnaay’s w...

The Dutch health insurance system Before you come to the Netherlands, you should inquire whether your current health insurance will suffice in the Netherlands or if you need a supplementary cover. Because everybody in the Netherlands must have insurance for medical costs. Which type of health insurance you need depends on your situation. The basic health insurance package is also mandatory for students of all ages who have a (part-time) job, or students over 30 years old who plan to stay for more than one year. In short, there are three possibilities for you to consider: 1 You have to take out a Dutch public healthcare insurance: This applies mainly to foreign nationals who have a part-time job or do an internship in the Netherlands. Please note that if you do not apply for it, you may b...

As of January 2006, a new insurance system for curative healthcare came into force in the Netherlands. Under the new Health Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet), all residents of the Netherlands are obliged to take out a health insurance. The new system is a private health insurance with social conditions. The system is operated by private health insurance companies; the insurers are obliged to accept every resident in their area of activity. A system of risk equalisation enables the acceptance obligation and prevents direct or indirect risk selection.

Brianna Barnes and Jonathan Atherton travel to Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. They start by exploring the compact city centre, built around a network of beautiful canals overlooked by the gabled mansions of 17th century merchants. Whilst Jonathan looks around using the locals’ favourite means of transport, the bicycle, Brianna takes a tour of the waterways with the free-spirited Saint Nicolaas Boat Club. Amsterdam is renowned as one of the world’s most liberal cities, and en route they check out the city’s famously tolerant attitude to soft drugs like marijuana, and the nefarious goings-on in the city’s infamous Red Light District. As befits one of Europe’s major cultural centres, Amsterdam is also home to numerous excellent museums. Jonathan visits the Rijksmuseum, which has ...
