Inhabited since Antiquity, Ripaille was, since the 13th century, a hunting ground of the counts of Savoy before becoming, from the 14th century, one of their favorite residence. At the end of the 19th century, the site of Ripaille fell into ruin. It was then that the Alsacian Frédéric Engel-Gros, owner of the DMC mills and a great art lover, fell in love with the site and acquired it. Reviews Chateau de Ripaille, jardins, vignobles =================================== The house and gardens are a 20 minute walk from the centre of the town but there is adequate parking there. Entrance fee was 11 Euros plus one for the audio guide. The cafe at the end of the tour was very friendly and reasonably priced. Domaine de Ripalle has a long and fascinating history so give yourself plenty of time to take it all in. ------------------ A merger of mediaeval and recent renovation of an stunning chateau with an interesting history. The wine cave is frozen in time. Do take the audio guide for an extra €2 as would make it much more interesting visit. They also sell their own wine produce on site. We enjoyed our visit and recommend it. ---------------- One of the groups I belong to organized a visit to the Chateau. It was certainly worth it. We had an excellent guide who showed us around the grounds, the chateau as well as certain things which are not necessarily open to the public. The chateau is very interesting and certainly up to date in its reparations. The grounds themselves are very attractive although spring has not yet sprung as yet. ------------------------- This was our first castle visit in the region so, of course, the historical fact were really interesting. The castle is amazingly in good shape for the age. ------------------- This Chateau looks very impressive from the road & as you enter the courtyard. A very interesting tale about a poor unfortunate monk & his death makes me feel that this tour holds a lot of promise. Sadly it didn't excite me any further. There was nothing 'wow' about the chateau bar the views from the Windows. However it was a cloudy rainy day & we couldn't really appreciate what was behind the clouds. I However, it was a pleasant few hours spent out of the rain. The coffee shop is lovely. Though the choice of American jazz blues music was interesting. Oh & get an electronic tour guide if your French is weak. ---------------------- They do a great job of showcasing this castle rebuilt by a textile magnate. Do not miss the short movie, it is probably the best part of the visit - that and the views over the lake and the mountains all around. Don't miss the visit of the extensive grounds of the castle. That visit is free, and there are all sorts of different trees and wildlife if you are early enough. The memorial to the passeurs who helped refugees in the second world war get into Switzerland is a bit spooky, but it gives the walk in the grounds a goal. This is a huge reserve, right by the town. Good for the town for keeping it unspoilt - the real estate value must be considerable! ----------------------- Historical castle of the Dukes of Savoie. The interior of the castle and the gardens can be visited individually. The visit can be complemented with a walk through the vineyards as well as the forest. A restaurant in the castle is offering one menu and if weather permits you can sit on the terrace with nice views on the mountains. Staff is very friendly and the price of the menu is relatively low. Highly recommanded. Parking is not an issue; there is also a large parking lot in front of the street. --------------------------- During our annual ski holiday nearby we decided to have a break. The castel was selected and we tried to arrange access by phone. Not so easy but stay tuned it is well worth the effort. A guide is recommended indeed as others already found. I appreciated the old kitchens with big fire places, huge steel ovens, hot water installations etc. Gives a very good impression of ancient life in a castle.... The big wine presses are impressive. The tour ends in the wine cellar with a capacity of about 50.000 liters of locally produced white wine. The guide opens a few bottles to taste. This, however, is not the most exiting experience of the tour. But again the overall impression is very good. ----------------------- absoluetly stunning place and views are spectacular. great wee walk around with the history of the place on placs (in 4 different languages including English) -------------------- very nice to walk around the castle.to see the gardens. in site not so much to see very expensive.only the peoples who likes to see old castles.
