Uganda (/juːˈɡændə/ yew-GAN-də or /juːˈɡɑːndə/ yew-GAHN-də), officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the southwest by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania, situating the country in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.

In the last 20 years Uganda's economy has grown by an estimated seven percent year on year. Al Jazeera's Malcom Webb reports from Kampala.
Uganda is looking forward to 2017 as a year of strong economic growth. The country says negative sentiments and uncertainty dominated 2016. The election cycle also saw many investors develop cold feet but the Bank of Uganda says the economy is beginning to gain momentum. CGTN's Michael Baleke has that report.
The central bank is optimistic that Uganda’s economy will claw back in the next financial year as it moves to facilitate private sector growth. The Central Bank hope is premised on a reduction in the borrowing rate by one percent to 10 percent. Bank of Uganda governor Professor Emmanuel Mutebile says the massive investment in infrastructure projects and an increase in foreign direct investments will see the economy grow at 5 percent from 3.9.

Uganda's government says the country's economy is stressed but not in a recession. This follows a new report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that shows that Uganda's economy is performing relatively well, but in a complex environment. CCTV's Michael Baleke has that report.
Business in the foreign exchange market has dipped further by more than half, with sector sources suggesting daily transactions now at average of $4M (Shs14.4B) down from approximately $10M (Shs36B) 18 months ago. The forex bureaux are blaming a huge reduction in foreign direct inflows, slow down in regional trade, as well as dwindling demand for international import requirements as some of the reasons for reduction in business. Slower business activities apart, the shut down of some bureaux including Crane forex bureau, is not helping the conditions in the market either, where money traders are reporting nearly 65% reduction in profit margin across traded unit currencies combined. Uganda’s nearly 270 registered forex bureaux are now having to deal with the running effects of wobbling ...

Living in a poor country with one of the worst doctor-patient ratios in the world - about one for every 24,000 people - it's perhaps no surprise that many Ugandans are tempted by alternative remedies, even though there's often little evidence to support the claims made about their efficacy in treating or preventing disease. But the phenomenon does beg many questions, not least of which are who is really benefiting from the sale of these products and how exactly are they marketed? We'd heard reports about one particularly controversial business, a complex multi-level marketing scheme run in Uganda under the aegis of a Chinese company called Tiens, which produces food supplements. Its products, we'd been told, were being inappropriately sold as medications - in some cases for very serious ...
In the second installment of our special focus on the state of health care in Africa, we head to Uganda where health care campaigners warn there could be a breakdown in medical provision, if emigration of doctors and nurses continues. They're demanding that more controls be brought in. This follows Uganda's decision to consider transferring around 200 medical professionals to Trinidad and Tobago. CCTV'S Isabel Nakirya reports
Cell Phones continue to affect the lives of many in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the health sector is among the latest beneficiaries of better, cheaper, mobile access. In Uganda, mobile operators have rolled out health services through their subscribers' handsets. It's hoped the new services will boost access to health care for many, especially those in parts of Uganda that are yet to gain access to proper medical care. CCTV's Michael Baleke reports

Boniface Mutatina, a McMaster Health Forum Queen Elizabeth Scholar in Strengthening Health Systems, provides a critical overview of the Ugandan healthcare system (webinar recording). The Ugandan health system, like other systems, aims to achieve, promote and sustain good health for its people. The health system has been evolving over the last 3 to 4 decades to handle emerging concerns and challenges to the health situation in the country. Currently, healthcare delivery is done through a decentralized framework mostly, through modern and to some extent traditional practices. According to international health indicators, healthcare in Uganda is becoming more accessible and robustly a public donor-private interlinked sector. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical description of the U...

Greatest Hostage Rescue operation in the History: Operation Thunderbolt : Entebbe Airport..Uganda Operation Entebbe was a counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on 4 July 1976. A week earlier, on 27 June, an Air France plane with 248 passengers was hijacked, by members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the German Revolutionary Cells, and flown to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda. The local government supported the hijackers and dictator Idi Amin personally welcomed them. Kenyan sources supported Israel and in the aftermath of the operation Idi Amin issued orders to retaliate and slaughter several hundreds of Kenyans present in Uganda. The hijackers separated the Israelis and...

The risk involved was extraordinary... The timing had to be impeccable and the entire rescue operation rested on achieving the element of surprise. When Israeli citizens were held hostage by terrorists at Entebbe Airport in Uganda in late June 1976, Israeli commandos and soldiers embarked on one of the most daring and dangerous rescue operations ever in order to save them. See how Israel pulled off this seemingly impossible stunt in the video below.

English/Nat A shadowy rebel group has brought a reign of terror to northern Uganda. The Lord's Resistance Army is accused of butchering hundreds of civilians in its war to topple the Ugandan government. APTV visited the northern town of Gulu, in the heart of rebel territory, where the local population is subjected to constant rebel attacks. Thousands of soldiers garrisoned in and around Gulu have failed to deter rebel attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army or L-R-A. Government troops comb towns and countryside for the shadowy rebel organisation that's brought mayhem to northern Uganda for almost a decade. Some doubt the army -- or Ugandan People's Defence Force, as it's know here -- will ever ben able to defeat the L-R-A. The Ugandan army says the rebels are gener...

Located in Eastern Africa, Kenya lies astride the equator and shares its borders with Tanzania and Uganda. The country boasts a warm humid climate with diverse ecosystems, from snow-capped mountains, semi-arid desert regions and rainforests, to acacia-studded savannah, flamingo lakes, white palm-fringed ocean beaches and coral reefs. How about this for the ultimate sundowner? We heard about it from two guests, recently returned from Kenya's Mara North Conservancy. Their game drive ended on an isolated hill with a poetry-inducing 360-degree panorama. As the setting sun stained the vast wilderness blood red, their guide handed them Masai blankets, traditional weapons and an iced G&T; with freshly cut lime. For a perfect crescendo, they spotted a huge leopard as they drove back to camp, foll...
This is a journey into Kenya’s origins and its uncertain future. We travel along the colony’s iron foundations, the railway lines laid by the British imperialists as they raced to create a passage to Lake Victoria from Mombasa. 120 years later, the same railway is enjoyed by tourists seeking a taste of the vintage African safari, with luxury 1st-class carriages and pressed napkins. To either side of their trammelled way lie the gleaming metropolis of Nairobi, the rolling ranchers’ pastures and the sprawling slums of Kibera. Shot on SD and 8mm film, this film takes the viewer on an experiential journey through different periods of history and levels of society: we are welcomed by a demented Mau Mau veteran, carefully set on our way by a railway tourist guide, and bade farewell in true Momb...

40 years ago Uganda was home to a large Asian community, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs called it paradise. But the peace and tranquillity that existed for generations was to be short lived due to the actions of Idi Amin. In 1972 he ordered Asians to leave the country and were given just 90 days to flee. Pukaar News travelled to Uganda with Businessman Khalid Sheikh from Leicester. He was born in Uganda but had to leave with his family when he was just 14, but he regularly returns to visit his mothers grave. Pukaar News spoke to other Ugandan Asians who were forced to leave 40 years ago but have since returned to the county and re-started businesses including Mayur Madhvani and Sudhir Ruparelia.

Their moves went to the tempo and it was almost like God planned it! It inspired me to go find them in Uganda. My team and I searched and we found them. When we arrived, it w...

Ugandans are the hardest drinking Africans in the motherland, both in terms of per capita consumption and the hooch they choose to chug. Waregi, or "war gin," is what they call the local moonshine, and it makes the harshest Appalachian rotgut taste like freaking Bailey's. Its products, we'd been told, were being inappropriately sold as medications - in some cases for very serious ...

ich habe neununddreißigsieben fieber und bin in meinem wahn mal wieder lee
majors - als sechsmillionendollarmann
ich setze segel auf dem meer und streiche sie dann mit zidane in den farben von
real madrid an.
