Near East (French: Proche-Orient) is a geographical term that roughly encompasses Western Asia. Despite having varying definitions within different academic circles, the term was originally applied to the maximum extent of the Ottoman Empire. The term has fallen into disuse in English, and has been replaced by the term Middle East.
The Encyclopædia Britannica defines the Near East as including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the West Bank, and Yemen. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations defines the region similarly, but also includes Afghanistan while excluding the countries of North Africa and the Palestinian territories. According to the National Geographic Society, the terms Near East and Middle East denote the same territories and are 'generally accepted as comprising the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian territories, Syria, and Turkey'.
Near East University (Turkish: Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, commonly referred to as YDÜ) is a private university located in North Cyprus. It was founded in North Nicosia in 1988. The founder of the Near East University is Dr. Suat İ. Günsel, a Turkish Cypriot educationalist and entrepreneur.
The Near East University currently has 16 faculties with 98 departments, 4 vocational schools, 2 high schools and 4 graduate schools offering programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
With over 25,000 students, it is the largest university in Northern Cyprus.
The Near East University was founded by Günsel in 1988. It started higher education studies with two faculties and subsequently established 14 more faculties, four graduate schools, and 15 research centres. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 2008.
All the facilities and educational institutions of the university are located in the campus, along with the Near East College (middle and high school levels), the Near East Primary School and the Near East Kindergarten. The campus is a few kilometres away from the city of Nicosia, accessible through the Near East Boulevard. Transportation between the campus and the city is done through frequent buses that circulate through the city, including Gönyeli and the university.
The ancient Near East was the home of early civilizations within a region roughly corresponding to the modern Middle East: Mesopotamia (modern Iraq, southeast Turkey, southwest Iran, northeastern Syria and Kuwait),ancient Egypt, ancient Iran (Elam, Media, Parthia and Persia), Anatolia/Asia Minor and Armenian Highlands (Turkey's Eastern Anatolia Region, Armenia, northwestern Iran, southern Georgia, and western Azerbaijan), the Levant (modern Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and Jordan), Cyprus and the Arabian Peninsula. The ancient Near East is studied in the fields of Near Eastern archaeology and ancient history. It begins with the rise of Sumer in the 4th millennium BC though the date it ends varies: either covering the Bronze Age and the Iron Age in the region until the conquest by the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BC or that of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.
The ancient Near East is considered one of the cradles of civilization. It was here that intensive year-round agriculture was first practiced, leading to the rise of the first dense urban settlements and the development of many familiar institutions of civilization, such as social stratification, centralized government and empires, organized religion and organized warfare. It also saw the creation of the first writing system and law codes, early advances that laid the foundations of astronomy and mathematics, and the invention of the wheel.
NEAR or Near may refer to:
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.

This week on Crash Course mythology, Mike is talking to you about floods. You may have heard the story of Noah and the Ark from the Bible, but that is not the only deluge story humans tell. It's a common thing across culture. You could say the study of mythology is...flooded with them. Sorry. We'll be looking at floods from Mesopotamia from the Epic of Gilgamesh, and a flood story from the Zoroastrian tradition. And we'll look at a Roman flood story from Ovid's metamorphosis. It's a deluge of flood stories! Most of the stories and quotations in this episode are adapted from David Leeming's Mythology textbook, "The World of Myth." Introduction to the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) (RLST 145) with Christine Hayes In this lecture, the Hebrew Bible is understood against the background of Ancient Near Eastern culture. Drawing from and critiquing the work of Yehezkel Kaufmann, the lecture compares the religion of the Hebrew Bible with the cultures of the Ancient Near East. Two models of development are discussed: an evolutionary model of development in which the Hebrew Bible is continuous with Ancient Near Eastern culture and a revolutionary model of development in which the Israelite religion is radically discontinuous with Ancient Near Eastern culture. At stake in this debate is whether the religion of the Hebrew Bible is really the religion of ancient Israel. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Bible as a Product of Religious and...

Documentary about the Lakes of the Great rift Valley in East Africa. The Great Rift Valley is part of a huge geological fault in East Africa. This fascinating deep scar in the Earth’s crust that divides Kenya in a north-south direction, extends for nine thousand kilometres within a wild and seemingly endless landscape. The fault is particularly famous for its soda, alkaline and freshwater lakes such as Lake Naivasha that is located a hundred kilometres from Nairobi. As with many other lakes in the Great Rift Valley, with more than four hundred bird species Lake Naivasha is a true paradise among ornithologists. God’s revelation to the ancient Hebrew prophets was about what they could see around them. The earth to them was nothing more and nothing less than the flat “land” before their eyes. They knew nothing of a “planet”, a sphere floating in the ether; a sun around which that planet revolved. They didn’t know the earth rotated on its axis. To them, the sun “came up” in one place and “went down” in another. To the writers of Scripture Sheol was “down” and heaven was “up.” We still repeat that construct today, adding such things to our own cosmological understanding as “multiverse” or “parallel universes.” “Dimensional space and time” are possible (even probable, mathematically) in our world even though there is scant tangible information about them. The Ancients also had some thoughts about cr...

Dr. Rocco Errico clarifies the original intent of biblical texts by comparing Aramaic texts with Greek and Hebrew versions. He shows how ancient idioms have been translated literally, thereby confusing many present interpretations. His goal is to reach a better understanding of the Old and New Testaments by interpreting these idioms correctly.
This week we discuss Roman religion. The Romans invaded the Near East and controlled it for quite some time, but they brought their thoughts with them. Additionally, they adapted ideas from others. We will discuss the idea of "stolen gods," the Emperor cult, and Mystery religions.
