ALD - Atomic Layer Deposition is an exciting technique to prepare desired materials one atomic layer at a time. In this video we explain the deposition process with an ALD reactor that uses gas phase precursors (chemicals). These precursors enter the reaction chamber one at a time along with the carrier gas (usually nitrogen in gas phase processes). Each time a precursor enters the chamber, it reacts with the substrate surface in a self limiting manner, forming a thin layer. The excess precursor molecules and reaction byproducts are removed after each step with the help of the carrier gas and a vacuum pump. A thermocouple and computer controlled heaters ensure the desired deposition temperature, which gives control over the deposited films crystal structure. For example by using a correct deposition temperature, amorphous, anatase phase or rutile phase titanium dioxide can easily be obtained. The greatest benefits of ALD is the possibility to apply a thin film with well defined thickness and composition on even sophisticated three-dimensional objects. The applications for atomic layer deposition technique have dramatically increased over the last few decades as it is now used for the preparation of solar cells, ultra thin corrosion resistant coatings, microelectronic devices and even for the enhancement of medical implants.

Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a rare x-linked genetic disease which often results in serious disability or death in males, primarily in boys between the ages of 4 and 10. There is no effective treatment for ALD, and stem cell transplant offers males the best chance for long-term survival. Females are carriers of ALD and have a 50/50 chance of passing the disease on to their children. In addition, most females develop some physical symptoms of the disease after age 35, such as stiffness and numbness of their legs, loss of balance and coordination, and bowel and bladder dysfunction.
Women usually learn that they are ALD carriers after a male relative, such as a brother, father or son, is diagnosed with, or dies from ALD. However, with the recent advent of ALD newborn screening which will be implemented in more and more states and countries over the coming years, female ALD carriers will be identified at birth, resulting in a growing pool of girls and young women who are known carriers.
This documentary features the stories of young women who belong to the support group Y.A.C. (Young ALD Carriers). Its purpose is to raise awareness of and insight into the unique issues faced by young ALD carriers, and to lend support and guidance to newly identified carriers and to the parents of these carriers. In addition, it is the hope of these young women that this documentary engenders new medical research/studies pertaining to the physical symptoms suffered by ALD carriers; advancements in reproductive technologies for carriers of genetic disorders; advocacy efforts to urge states to require insurance companies to cover the costs of such reproductive technologies; and continued advocacy and support for the implementation of ALD newborn screening.

ALD is based on surface controlled thin film deposition. During coating, two or more chemical vapors or gaseous precursors react sequentially on the substrate surface, producing a solid thin film. Most ALD coating systems utilize a flow--through traveling wave setup, where an inert carrier gas flows through the system and precursors are injected as very short pulses into this carrier flow. The carrier gas flow takes the precursor pulses as sequential "waves" through the reaction chamber, followed by a pumping line, filtering systems and, eventually, a vacuum pump.

Atomic layer deposition
Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a thin film deposition technique that is based on the sequential use of a gas phase chemical process. ALD is considered a subclass of chemical vapour deposition. The majority of ALD reactions use two chemicals, typically called precursors. These precursors react with the surface of a material one at a time in a sequential, self-limiting, manner. Through the repeated exposure to separate precursors, a thin film is slowly deposited. ALD is a key process in the fabrication of semiconductor devices, and part of the set of tools available for the synthesis of nanomaterials.
Introduction
Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is a thin film deposition method in which a film is grown on a substrate by exposing its surface to alternate gaseous species (typically referred to as precursors). In contrast to chemical vapor deposition, the precursors are never present simultaneously in the reactor, but they are inserted as a series of sequential, non-overlapping pulses. In each of these pulses the precursor molecules react with the surface in a self-limiting way, so that the reaction terminates once all the reactive sites on the surface are consumed. Consequently, the maximum amount of material deposited on the surface after a single exposure to all of the precursors (a so-called ALD cycle) is determined by the nature of the precursor-surface interaction. By varying the number of cycles it is possible to grow materials uniformly and with high precision on arbitrarily complex and large substrates.

Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a rare x-linked genetic disease which often results in serious disability or death in males, primarily in boys between the ages of 4 and 10. There is no effective treatment for ALD, and stem cell transplant offers males the best chance for long-term survival. Females are carriers of ALD and have a 50/50 chance of passing the disease on to their children. In addition, most females develop some physical symptoms of the disease after age 35, such as stiffness and numbness of their legs, loss of balance and coordination, and bowel and bladder dysfunction.
Women usually learn that they are ALD carriers after a male relative, such as a brother, father or son, is diagnosed with, or dies from ALD. However, with the recent advent of ALD newborn screening which will be implemented in more and more states and countries over the coming years, female ALD carriers will be identified at birth, resulting in a growing pool of girls and young women who are known carriers.
This documentary features the stories of young women who belong to the support group Y.A.C. (Young ALD Carriers). Its purpose is to raise awareness of and insight into the unique issues faced by young ALD carriers, and to lend support and guidance to newly identified carriers and to the parents of these carriers. In addition, it is the hope of these young women that this documentary engenders new medical research/studies pertaining to the physical symptoms suffered by ALD carriers; advancements in reproductive technologies for carriers of genetic disorders; advocacy efforts to urge states to require insurance companies to cover the costs of such reproductive technologies; and continued advocacy and support for the implementation of ALD newborn screening.

ALD is based on surface controlled thin film deposition. During coating, two or more chemical vapors or gaseous precursors react sequentially on the substrate surface, producing a solid thin film. Most ALD coating systems utilize a flow--through traveling wave setup, where an inert carrier gas flows through the system and precursors are injected as very short pulses into this carrier flow. The carrier gas flow takes the precursor pulses as sequential "waves" through the reaction chamber, followed by a pumping line, filtering systems and, eventually, a vacuum pump.
